                                INTRODUCTION
                                ============

POSAT3.3 is a cash register program for shops of any size and
of all types. Being in business myself, I did aim to create a
program that will makes business easier, more efficient to run
        and also is saving time.
I am also aware that cash registers and POS programs do cost a
lot. POSAT3.3 is designed to operate on a normal computer with
a cash drawer and a docket printer attached.
This will be a saving to you of probably 40% to 60% compared to
        an electronic cash register.
POSAT3.3 itself cost only a fraction of what a commercial POS
system would cost. The greatest saving is how ever, the ease to
learn, to operate and use the time saving futures of POSAT3.3 .

POSAT3.3 is very easy to operate as the sale screens will gide
you all the way. A sales assistant need only 3 words and the own
personal code to to remember. As proprietor you will be confident
with POSAT3.3 while you testing it. Some users of POSAT3.1 and
POSAT3.2 experienced problems in setting up their printer. There
fore I'll include a number of set up files to suit a wide range
        of printers.

POSAT3.3 is flexible to suit small and big shops alike. This is
the reason that this program has two parts. POSAT3.3 which you
use in the cash register computer. And POSATO3.3 which can be
used in the cash register computer or the office computer. In
most businesses, POSATO3.3 would be run as soon POSAT3.3 is finish.

Data safety was a very important aspect. POSAT3.3 is designed
that in case of equipment or power failure, only the data of the
article you just typing in, may be lost.

                             WHAT POSAT3.3 DOES
                             ==================
        POSAT3.3 will...

work with any code length, that suit your shop. From the
international 13 digit bar code, to your own 3 character
code. 6 and 13 code length $ all other code length #.

make operating the cash register very easy. Just remember
the words NEW, RETURN, PETTY, EDITOR and your SPC (sales
person code) and follow the cyan (light blue) fields.

check every entry you type. In the number fields it will
accept numbers and'.'(full stops) only. In the code field
it will only accept codes what are in the pricelist, or it
will give a "code not found" warning. It will also beep a
low tune when ever a wrong key is pressed.

give a payment short warning and show the amount short.

give a payment to large warning when the payment is in
cheque or credit only and greater as the total. If the
payment is also including cash or cash only, then a

                                                                          1

                                                                          2

"change is "amount" " is shown when the payment was
           greater as the total.

record all payments in cash, cheque, credit and in total
and how many articles where sold.

record how many of each article where sold at a day.

record how many of each article where sold in a period.

record how many article where sold by any sales person.

record the total amount of what each sales person sold.

keep record for up to five sales persons. Should you have
more staff, then up to 100 or so sales codes can be
           provided. #

round down the total to the nearest 0.05 or 0.10.
or come with this future disabled. $
or allow to change this future. #

show the date and time of the day on screen.

show the date in the form you request.$

record discount sales to trade or to general public. The
level of the discount can be determent in the pricelist,
           or at the keyboard. #

show how many of each article are on stock. #

show the reordering cost of articles sold.

will show over a time what articles "doing well" and which
           lines are "slow".

give a low stock warning if the stock falls below a level
given by you. (Only in conjunction with inventory control). #

print a good looking docket on any printer, preferable on
           a docket printer.

save the screen from burn-in. After each sale the screen
goes blank, until the SP key (or any key) is pressed. $

allow to call a word processor or editor to add or alter
the pricelist. You can also use this function to write
letters and accounts and also print them. (While the cash
           register is idle). $

allow you to use 2 or more cash registers in the same shop. #

allow you to integrate branches. #

enable you to use multiple price lists. (This is for shops
with a slow computer or for shops with more than 10,000
           lines. #

                                                                          2

                                                                          3

record daily results for any given period. Weekly, monthly
ect. This includes petty cash expenses.

add tax to every sale when required and show it on the
sales docket and the totals. (USA).

show the portion of tax in the day-total. (For countries with
value added tax or mehrwertsteuer like UK, Germany). $

rename the daily result file after processing to
POS+year+month+day. For example on March 12.94, the file
RESULT.EVC would be automatically renamed to POS94MAR.12
when you run POSATO33 on that day. This will prevent
accidental re processing of the file RESULT.REG . $

make stock taking easy. It will still be not a joyful
occasion, but you will be needing only 40% to 50% of the
           time usually used.

be (when registering) sent to you, with the unregistered
versions of: QEDIT, a editor very suitable to handle all
files needed by POSAT3.3. (Read, write, copy, rename, line
and column manipulation, printing and cut out portions of a
file.) LIST, an excellent file reader and handler. (As
           above but no writing.) $

And some more very useful goodies and hints. $

                          WHAT HARD WARE YOU NEED
                          =======================

You need a IBM compatible computer fast enough to read your
pricelist from front to back in less the 4 seconds.
Also a cash drawer and cash drawer driver and a docket printer.
In some docket printers is the cash drawer driver included.
POSAT3.3 is designed to have the printer connected to the
parallel port and the printer should be a 40 column docket
printer. You can however use a normal 80 column printer.
The cash drawer will be connected to the serial port that is
COM1 or COM2. If you need the connection in reverse then see
        the file SHOPDATA.TXT.
Please take the following list as an indication of the type
and speed of a computer you need. If you stocking up to 750
lines (different articles), then a XT 8086 will do and is very
cheep. If you stocking up to 7500 lines then a AT 486SX 25 or

                                                                          3

                                                                          4

better is needed. If you stock more than 14000 lines, then you
        need the multi-price list version of POSAT3.3 and a AT486 SX 25
or better. POSAT3.3 will run on a DX about 10% faster as on a
SX version. POSAT3.3 does not use a co processor when present.

Within 4 seconds (that is 2 sec. average) the following
type of computers would read to line No.:

XT 8068 MH 8 computer would get to line No. 750
AT 286 MH16 computer would get to line No. 1550
AT 386 MH20 computer would get to line No. 2580
AT 386 MH40 computer would get to line No. 4450
AT 486 MH25 computer would get to line No. 7570
AT 486 MH50 computer would get to line No. 14300

Above figures are test results on different computers with
        a CACHE installed.

                          BEFORE YOU USE POSAT3.3
                          =======================
In order for POSAT3.3 to work correctly you must install:
            DOS 3.1 or better.
A cache, which should be bigger as the files PRICELST.EVC
and RESULT.EVC added up times 3. (See section on cache.)
ANSI.SYS, a file that comes with DOS. (needed only some
times with not so compatible computers.)

                        INSTALLING POSAT3.3 TO TEST
                        ===========================
         Copy the files POSAT33.EXE , USED.EXE , PRICELST.EVC ,
SHOPDATA.EVC and POSATO33.EXE to the root or any other directory
on your hard drive. If your printer is EPSON compatible you are
ready to start POSAT3.3. Should you have a differed brand printer
or the dockets do not look right, then you need to alter the file
SHOPDATA.EVC . First look at the files *.PRN I included, maybe
your printer brand is among them and you rename this file to
SHOPDATA.EVC. If not, then you have to use a word processor in
ASCII mode or an editor and load the file SHOPDATA.EVC. Change
any lines in question and the printer codes to suit your hard-
ware. You find in the file SHOPDATA.TXT a detailed description.
POSAT3.3 works also perfected without a printer or cash drawer
connected. Make sure that there is always enough disk space left
as the figure you get by adding up the files PRICELST.EVC ,
        RESULT.EVC, SOLD.EVC and multiplied by 3.

                      INSTALLING POSAT3.3 IN YOUR SHOP
                      ================================
Copy the files POSAT33.EXE , USED.EXE and the files SHOPDATA.EVC
and PRICELST.EVC in the root or any other directory. The files
*.EVC must be changed to suit the hard ware and the stock in your
shop. ( This mean to write your own pricelist and shopdata file.)
If you have no second (office) computer, then you must also copy
POSATO33.EXE in above directory. Should you have a office computer,
the copy the files POSATO33.EXE , SHOPDATA.EVC and PRICELST.EVC to
        a directory of your choice.
                                                                          4

                                                                          5

INSTALLING ON A FLOPPY ONLY COMPUTER
                    ====================================
I do not recommend this, al through it is possible. The cache
must be installed as read AND WRITE cache. Copy POSAT33.EXE ,
USED.EXE and the files SHOPDATA.EVC and PRICELST.EVC on to disk
No.1. Make sure that there is at least twice the size of the
pricelist on the disk still available.
Copy POSATO33.EXE, SHOPDATA.EVC and PRICELST.EVC on to disk
No.2 and make sure that there is at least 4 times the size of
the pricelist on disk space still available.

9 EASY STEPS TO USE POSAT3.3
                        ============================
        1 To start POSAT3.3 type > POSAT33 <
        2 Type salesperson code ( here it's S, P, Y, B ).
3 Type article CODE and acknowledge Y/N.
4 Type how many articles the customer wants.
5 Type the next code or F < or FFFFFF ( to finish sale ).
        6 Press C, Q, or T (standing for Cash, cheQue, crediT) .
7 Type the amount the customer is handing over and <.
8 Press any key and POSAT3.3 goes in screen saver mode until
you press a SP code, which brings you to No 2 for the
next sale. Or you type 'DAYEND' and POSAT3.3 is
concluding, showing the day's results and closing the
                file RESULT.* .
9 Type POSATO33 < to start (POSAT Office). POSATO3.3 will read
the results stored in RESULT.* and places the final
                results in the files

                                CODE SAMPLES
                                ============
For your convenience I've included a file PRICELST.EVC and
SHOPDATA.EVC so you can test POSAT3.3 without having to write
your own. I include also a number of *.PRN files. This are
actually shopdata files with printer codes of different brands.
Sample staff codes and names are:
Y for Yvonne, S for Sue, P for Paul, B for Sam Baker.
The fifth isn't used in this example and X'ed out.

                           START AND USE POSAT3.3
                           ======================
When your computer and POSAT3.3 is set up as described above the
you can start it by typing POSAT33 and press <. The POSAT3.3
opening screen will appear with my particulars in the lower part
and a "Press any key" under neath.
The second and third screens are a short introduction and
some sample codes. You may jot the codes down or use PRINT SCREEN.
Should the second screen not appear but an error message No. 15
then the file SHOPDATA.EVC was not found. If the error No. is from
100 to 106, then the data in the file SHOPDATA.EVC is not correct
or not on the correct place.
After the first 3 introduction screens it will show some more
regarding the status of the files needed to run POSAT3.3 . It will
also check for a printer and a cash drawer. The next screen is
the sales screen. It has in the upper half ten white fields with
appropriate description in front. The left five fields are mostly
for data input in regard to the articles selling. The fields on
        the right are concerning payment.
The lower half of the screen will show the articles you are just
selling incl. price and tax where applicable. The lower screen is
        scrolling when necessary.

The registered copy will show the start up screen and then go
straight to the sales screen, IF it found all files, printer
        and cash drawer in order.

All fields are normally white, but will turn cyan (light blue)
when it is expecting input from you. Some fields are turning red.
This is indicating to you that there is no going back to this
        field when it is completed.
Normally the writing in the white fields is black. Should it
turn red, then POSAT3.3 is warning you of short payment or code
        not found or low stock.
POSAT3.3 will also beep at you a low tune when you do some
thing wrong, and beep high when finished or OK.

You can always go back wards to the previous field (except from
the SP field and a field that comes after a red field. You can
however go backwards while you are still in a red field.
In the description, code, sp, Y/N fields you go back wards
by using the backspace key, or press ESC (to clear a field).
To go back wards to the previous field you press ESC. When
you are however in field for prices, or how many items, then
you must press ESC and then < .

The SPC, Yes/No, code and description field will finish them
self when this fields are full. You can finish the code and
description field by filling it up with spaces, or pressing <
at the end of your input.
Number fields must be finished by pressing <.

When you want to finish a sale, the type "F" and < or
"FFFFFF" in the code field. This will add up the total and show
the amount owing in the lower window and in the top right field.

Press C, Q or T according how the customer is paying. Type in
the amount (Cash, cheQue, crediT) handed over and press <.
All three payment method can be mixed.
                                                                          6

                                                                          7

If the pay was covering the total, then POSAT3.3 will finish
the docket, show the change due and go to the "DAYEND" field.
POSAT3.3 will stubbornly refuse to proceed if the amount payed
by credit or cheque or both is exceeding the total.

If you just press < while in the DAYEND field, then POSAT3.3
will go in screen saver mode. When you type "EDITOR" instead,
then the registered version will call a word processor or editor
of your choice. While in your word processor/editor, you can
add articles to the pricelist, check what stock has been sold
and what is left, or write accounts, letters etc. When you type
"DAYEND" in this field, then POSAT3.3 will finish this day and
print the results of the day on screen and printer.

When you typed in a code, and a message appears saying "code not
found", then this article is not in the pricelist. Type in the
code field the word NEW and <, and you will be given a screen
to enter sales of articles not in the pricelist. This function
does not write this article into the pricelist. This new code
should be entered into the pricelist before POSATO3.3
is run the next time. If you miss this, then POSATO3.3 will add
the sales amount to the file DAYBYDAY, but other wise ignore this
        article.It is of no
importance to fill the fields "Whsale price" in correctly.
If the right figure is not handy, then type 0 and <.

When a customer want to return goods, then type in the code
field the word "RETURN". You will be given a screen to enter
goods returned. Just follow the cyan fields and type the data
of the article as you read it from the docket. If the wholesale
figure is not handy, then type 0 and <.

When you want to take money out of the till to pay for expenses
etc. then type in the code field the word "PETTY" <. You will
be given a screen to enter expenses payed out of the till.
POSAT3.3 will record the amount payed and adjust the relevant
results. It will also print a docket which you have to retain, as
only there you find a description what for the expense where. I
will shortly improve the PETTY CASH function. All sorts of
expenses codes can then be placed into the pricelist. POSATO3.3
will then add the expenses up as it does now with articles sold.

You can not mix sales and returns, sales and petty expenses
or returns and petty expenses on the same sale and docket.

To open the cash drawer without a sale you type "DRAWER" in
        the code field.

You do not have to type trailing zeros. You can enter
                  $50.00 as 50.00 or 50 <
               or $ 5.90 as 5.90 or 5.9 <

Do NEVER use + , - or 'xyz' signs with any numbers, when
        using POSAT3.3 .

The data file names in the registered version will have the
        extension of *.REG .

                                                                          7

                                                                          8

                           The file PRICELST.EVC

       > Front of page

In this version, the CODE field is from column 1 to 6. Use
        CAPITAL letters or NUMBERS only.
The Description can start at column 7, but for clarity it is
best to start at column 8 and end at column 33. ( Use only type
writer keys. No printer codes etc. ).

The next three entries are the wholesale price, sale price and
stock level indicator. It doesn't matter where you place them,
as long as you leave column 36 FREE, and a space or more between
the prices and stock level indicator.

NOTE: If you use a code other than numbers, then you must
               use only UPPER CASE CHARACTERS.

                            THE RESULT.EVC FILE
                            ===================
The file RESULT.EVC (or .REG) will be created every time you
start POSAT3.3, and every detail of all sales will be stored in
it. If the file RESULT.EVC already exists, then POSAT3.3 will add
the new sales results to it. At every start up, it will print a
line "* START" and date plus starting time.

This was a short example of what the file RESULT.* look's like and
what the figures mean. It's not important that you know about
this, but it may be helpful if you need to trace back a sale.
                   (The discount function is optional.)
Not that the tax is calculated from the total after any rounding
        is deducted.

The file RESULT.* is also a tax record.
                   ----------------------------------------

                             STARTING POSATO3.3
                             ==================
POSATO3.3 is the second part of POSAT3.3. POSATO3.3 was
intentionally made a separate program as this is allowing more
flexibility. If you like you can make one program out of those
two and also make them start automatically. To achieve this, you
create a BATCH file, name it GO.BAT or START.BAT or similar and
place the word POSAT33 in the first line and the word POSATO33
in the second line. You could also write above words on the end
of the file AUTOEXEC.BAT. This will only work If POSAT3.3 and
POSATO3.3 is in the root directory, or on the path. Other wise

                                                                          9

                                                                         10

you will have to include the path when you make the above entry
any batch file. As mentioned before, POSAT3.3 will write all
sales results in the file RESULT.EVC. When POSATO3.3 is executed,
it will read the file RESULT.EVC and write the added up figures
to the files DAYBYDAY.EVC ( regarding money), SOLD.EVC (regarding
stock) and SPERSON.EVC (regarding sales assistant results).
You have the choice to run POSATO3.3 daily, weekly, monthly or
how ever it suits to the way you run your business.
The registered version will always rename the file RESULT.REG
to RES+YY+Month.DD. ( On the 15 Aug.94, the new file name would
be RES94AUG.15 ). It will also ask you near the end of the
program if you want the files DAYBYDAY.REG, SOLD.REG and
SPERSON.REG renamed. This may be a good idea on the end of a
month or quarter or year and so on.
When you require a print out of the results, then disconnect the
docket printer and plug in your normal printer.)
To start this program just type > POSATO33 < . A few screens
will pop up. Press Y or N or < as required.

From the beginning of POSATO3.3 to this point takes only a few
seconds. No further attendance is required after this and you
may finalize your till. POSATO3.3 will read the RESULT.* file
and place the results in the files SOLD.* , SPERSON.* and
DAYbyDAY.* . POSATO3.3 will read the file RESULT.* (front to
back) as often as there are articles in the file PRICELST.* .
You'll see a counter on your screen, showing what line is in
progress. On a slow computer, a long PRICELIST and a long
RESULT.* file, it may take a little while. POSATO3.3 will
beep and report when it is:

                       Ŀ
                        *  *  *  F I N I S H  *  *  *

                           THE DAYbyDAY.EVC FILE
                           =====================
You'll also find a file DAYbyDAY.* where the daily, weekly or
monthly results will be copied to. There will be three lines
         for each day.

Line one: the date line. The date and starting time the sales
where made, then the date POSATO3.3 wrote the results
in this file. If you don't run POSATO3.3 daily, then
POSATO3.3 will write for each day one date line. The
results however will all be added up as you see below.

Line two: the results of the date(s) shown at the date line(s).

Line three: the petty cash withdrawals and total takings reminder.

You'll have to rename DAYbyDAY on a yearly basis to DAYbyDAY.92
or similar, or let POSATO3.3 do this for you.

                             THE SOLD.EVC FILE
                             =================
The file SOLD.* will keep record of all stock sold. It does
this depending the sort of inventory control is implemented. In
this evaluation version, it is semi inventory control.
This file is also described under the heading inventory control
and a few sample lines are there for you to see. The file SOLD.*
will be updated, (and so the stock level), every time you run
        POSATO3.3 .

                            THE FILE SPERSON.EVC
                            ====================
The last file to describe is SPERSON.* POSATO3.3 will create
or add to this file every time POSATO3.3 is run the date of the
        record and the results.

The registered version will add new data to existing one, but in
a differed way as in the evaluation version. It will on the fist
line show a date of when the first entry was made, and a second
date when the last entry was made. The sales result will be added
up to show only one line per sales person. This file will also be
renamed showing the date in the file name like described for the
        file DAYBYDAY.* .
Returns are NOT deducted from the file SPERSON.EVC!

                                                                         11

                                                                         12

                                   CODING
                                   ======
POSAT3.3 will come in two standard code length. The international
standard bar code (13), and a code length of 6. Other code length
are available. You must decide if you want to invest in a scanner
and use the standard bar code. Or use the key board and have your
own shorter code. If you have a printer suitable to print bar
codes, then you can use a scanner for your own (short) code as
        well.
It may seem like a mountainous task to develop a coding system
for your shop. Believe me, it is not. Before you come to the end
of this paragraph you'll find coding easy, although it will take
some thought to figure out the perfect coding system for your own
        shop.
POSAT3.3 can work with any length of code. You can choose from
3 to the international code length of 13. The evaluations version
is set to 6 digits or letters. And the normal (not customized)
registered version will come in the code length of 6 or 13.
POSAT3.3 will work with digits or characters or both.

As an example of a code here's the first line of the file
        PRICELST.

         PKEG05 Krysler Enamel Gloss 0.5L A 2.40 4.90

The first 6 characters or numbers are the code meaning:
The first character is a P and is standing for Paint.
It could be also a W for Wallpaper, a T for Tools a.s.o.
The second character a K is standing for Krysler Paint, but it
could be a B for Berger Paint, P for British Paint or
          D for Dulux a.s.o.
The third and fourth character does describe the type
          as Enamel Gloss.
The fifth and sixth character represents the quantity, in this
          case 0.5 L.

Second example: in a Butcher shop you would use:
BSFB for Beef Scotch Fillet Bulk
BSF2 for Beef Scotch Fillet 2nd grade
BSS1 for Beef Sirloin Steak 1st grade
LFQG for Lamp Fore Quarter Grillers and so on.
You notice that a butcher may need only a 4 character code,
but will type the weight instead the number of items.

Third example: coding in a shoe shop.

1 Manufacturer code ( you may need 2 characters ).
2 M,L,B,G,T standing for Men, Ladies, Boy's, Girls, Toddler.
3 E,T,W,S,K = Elegant, Town, Walking, Sport, worK for men.
H,M,L = High, MED, Low heels in addition for ladies.
4 B,N,W,L,R,G,Y,E = Black, browN, White, bLue, Red, Green
                                  Yellow, bEige.
5 Identify number in case there are similar models from the
                same supplier on stock.

14LMW = a medium high Ladies shoe in white from manufacturer 14.
8MTN3 = a Medium elegant town shoe in brown from Manufacturer 8.

                                                                         12

                                                                         13

Still confused? Don't worry, as soon you have categorized your
stock and made yourself a template, you'll take to it like
        a duck to water.

In the above samples, I used mostly letters, it's a little bit
easier than numbers. Unfortunately, all the low cost pricing
guns give you only characters from 0-9, or A-L and $* + - / plus
        a space per column.
The new more versatile label printers can print what you want
and ideally but the date on the label as well. Of curse a butcher
would have no use for labels at all, but a shoe shop would need
3 labels (with identifications numbers) per pair.
If you carry mostly seasonal goods, or selling all year round the
same, an 'onstock column' in the file SOLD.* would be an advantage.

The registered version will come with the unregistered programs
LIST, and QEDIT. With this programs it is very easy to get
quickly to any information for report or reorder purpose.

                             INVENTORY CONTROL
                             =================
When you register you will have the choice of INVENTORY and
SEMI INVENTORY control. The difference for you is that choosing
inventory control means that you have to start with a stock take,
and also have to record every stock coming or returning to your
supplier. On the other hand as POSAT3.3 will deducted all stock
sold, you be always in the position to know what stock is left
        without a shelf count.
When it is time to reorder, you load the file SOLD.* in your
EDITOR (QEDIT is tops) use the search function to get you to the
code No. and see at a glance your Min/Max stock level and what
stock you have left. When the goods arrive the you have to
(in OVER WRITE MODE) ADD the No. of units you have received to
the number in the column 'on stock'.
For example, if you to reordered 10 units of PKFP1 and 15 of
PKFP4 you have to change the 18 to 28 and change the 7 to 22
POSAT3.3 can warn you when the number in the column 'on stock'
is below a level you decide.

While the use of '-' sign's in POSAT3.3 is not allowed, if you
EDIT the file SOLD.* you must use '-'sign's in front of
                            NEGATIVE FIGURES.

The figures for wholesale/sales price will reflect only the
reordering cost and to expecting takings and is of no importance.
You can call the editor between sales by typing EDITOR in the
"DAYEND" field. First the pricelist will pop up, but when you
press the ALT/E keys (when using QEDIT) the you can load any file
        you want.

REMEMBER: a well organized PRICELST (have the articles grouped
by supplier) will give you a tidy and easy to handle file SOLD.* .

                                                                         13

                                                                         14

                           SEMI INVENTORY CONTROL
                           ======================
The above sample of the file SOLD.EVC shows only 2 lines, while
in reality this file would be as long as your file PRICELST.EVC.
The two columns 'units sold' and 'total units sold' in con-
junction with the 'stock level indicator' are important.
The totals for whole sale cost and sales price are X units sold.
You could use this set up, as described in INVENTORY CONTROL,
by using the column 'total units sold' here as 'on stock column'.
You would however have to book delivered stock as minus figures,
and lose control over how many items you sold in total.

The file SOLD.* with semi inventory control.

                             LOW STOCK WARNING
                             =================
The low stock warning is given by a red on white message in the
description field, and a low tune. The low stock warning is set
by the Min/Max level you set in the pricelist and by a % figure
you place in the file SHOPDATA.REG . You can set the trigger
point for the warning two ways.
1: You type the No. when the warning should activate in the
pricelist for each article, and type 100 (this mean %) in the
         file SHOPDATA.* .
2: You type the No. of the maximum you would stock in the price
list for each article, and type a number (meaning % of) in the
         file SHOPDATA.* .
For example to No.1: you set the Min/max No to 5, then the alarm
will start when only 5 or less of this article are left on stock.
to No.2: you set the Min/Max No to 50, and the % No in the
SHOPDATA.* file to 20, then the alarm will start when 10 or
         less articles are left.
The figure of stock left, is updated every time POSATO3.3 is
         executed.

                                                                         14

                                                                         15

                                STOCK TAKING
                                ============
Stock taking is a hassle at the best of times. POSAT3.3
won't make this fun, but it'll cut the time by 50% and more.
You can also say goodbye to all the paper work as your whole
stock take is saved on disk. Should you need a hard copy then
the printer will do the writing.
Make a directory 'Stocktak' (DOS allows only 8 letters) and
copy POSAT33.EXE, POSATO33.EXE, PRICELST.* and SHOPDATA.* in
        this directory.
Go to the directory STOCKTAK and start POSAT3.3. Then, begin
to ring your whole shop through the cash register. Have one
person call out the code number and how many items there are,
and another person type it. Press F < only to interrupt stock
taking. Do shelf by shelf and section by section, as stock of
the same kind but at another place will be added when POSATO3.3
is processing the file RESULT.* .
The file SOLD.* will contain all info per articles and the
file DAYbyDAY will have the added up financial results. Last
thing you should do: rename above files to DAYbyDAY.93 and
SOLD.93 or similar and save them to a floppy disk and the stock
taking is done. The file SPERSON.* should be deleted.
Switch the docket printer off when you do stock take, most
computers are quite happy if the printer is only plugged in.

When you do a stock take in order to start with POSAT3.3 in
inventory control mode, then you would do the stock take not in
the stock take directory. Also you must not rename the file
SOLD.* . You must how ever remove the files DAYBYDAY.* and
        SPERSON.* .

                                  PRINTER
                                  =======
POSAT3.3 will show you at start up if it can 'see' a printer.
As explained before the docket is set up for a 40 column docket
printer But can be altered to suit a 80 column printer. The
printer must be capable of printing in PICA, ELITE, SEMICONDENCED
and for longer article descriptions in COMPRESSED as well.
Should the output from the printer not look right, then the
printer codes in the file SHOPDATA.EVC need changing or matching
release codes placed at the right places.
POSAT3.3 can work with NO printer or cash drawer connected.

                                CASH DRAWER
                                ===========
This evaluation copy was written to open the cash drawer auto-
matic at the end of each sale with a beep beep. If POSAT3.3 found
no cash drawer, then you hear a double tune like 'beep boohoo'.
Or you 'told' POSAT3.3 in the SHOPDATA.EVC set up file that there
        is no cash drawer.

If the cash drawer doesn't open, then check the following:
Was the serial port initialized? Is the cash drawer opener
plugged in the right port and has it power? Is the right SERIALX
        (X = 0,1 or 2) command in the file SHOPDATA.EVC .
Does the cash drawer need a specific "STRING" (sequence) to open.
When you encounter a problem with the cash drawer, then read the
SHOPDATA.TXT how to set up the cash drawer.
                                                                         15

                                                                         16

                                  SCANNERS
                                  ========
The little hand held scanners plug into the back of the keyboard,
or connected to the cable from the key board, do work well with
POSAT3.3 . They must be set to: send only digits (or characters)
and NO LINE FEED. You can use the standard 13 bar code, but this
will mean much extra typing when preparing the PRICELST, or if
the scanner is out of order.
If you rather use your own shorter code and a scanner, then you
must have a printer capable of printing bar codes labels.

                                  REPORTS
                                  =======
POSAT3.3 does not need any special report facility. As explained
before, POSAT3.3 is written to create all files in text form and
all data is there fore readily available. Other POS programs have
their files in machine language and need therefore a report
facility to allow access to the data. With POSAT3.3 all files
are in pure text and accessible at any time with the EDITOR
function. This will also allow you to repair those files you
self, if a power failure or a hard ware fault has damaged them.

If above files would be in machine language and damaged, then
you need to call a specialist for repairs, which charges are
        considerable.

                                 PROBLEMS
                                 ========
        SETUP FAULTS:
        ------------
POSAT3.3 : If the program stops working with the files supplied
by me, then there would be a file missing or the program is
corrupted. I'll have tested POSAT3.3 from the disk I sent out
and made sure that it did work.
Should the program not work, then drive incompatibility can be the
reason. Please get a replacement disk or if you are residing in
Australia, then send me this disk and $5.- worth of postage stamps
and I'll send in return your disk with commend and a disk with the
        latest version of POSAT.

If the program does work with my files but not with yours, then
please look in the manual for the right way to set POSAT3.3 and
the pricelist and shopdata file up.

Should you ever get this message:
        *   ***> CODE NOT FOUND ! <***  WRONG CODE or use   > NEW <
then 3 possible faults could have happened:

1; You typed a wrong code, try again.

2; The code in the PRICELST is wrong. Posat3.3 changes every code
to UPPER CASE. If the PRICELST has in a code a lower case
character, then POSAT3.3 can not find a match and so this
           article.

                                                                         16

                                                                         17

3; The code isn't in the PRICELST jet, and you have to use the
NEW ARTICLE function. Please NOTE that selling a new article
through NEW doesn't place this article in the PRICELST.
While in NEW ARTICLE, you can use the code of what this
article will have, and then later call up the EDITOR
and put the new article in the pricelist.

If POSAT3.3 is not exactly what you need.
                  =========================================

As I began designing POSAT3.3 I had the choice to build in all
possible futures and end up with a program, much to complex
for a small to medium shop. My intention was to create a program
that is easy to use and would run well on low cost computers.
While there are plenty of programs around, suitable for manu-
facturers, wholesalers and big stores, I couldn't find a single
shareware program to cater for the specific needs of small and
        medium retail business.

The evaluations copy of POSAT3.3 is programmed to suit a wide
cross section of retail stores. Further options are available,
described in this manual and I am happy to hear any suggestion of
futures you would like to have included.
POSAT3.3 can be altered to suit any business.

                                FUTURE PLANS
                                ============
Improving the petty cash function from only total expense to a
detailed record. The file SOLD.EVC will then not only show the
totals for each item sold, also the totals for each type of
        expense.
Changing the NEW ARTICLE function that it'll place new articles
sold, automatically in the file PRICELST.* .

                                REGISTERING
