TREES, natures most beautiful creation surround
us everywhere and serve us splendidly in many
                ways.

Apart from supplying us with shelter, shade and
privacy, they also supply us with flowers,
fruits, timber to build our homes and furniture,
fuel for our fires, and still we cut them down
without replacing them, we denude the land
without a thought for the future.

The average home garden will only support five or
six trees, so we must choose carefully and plant
our trees so that they will grow to be beautiful
specimens of their type at maturity.

It is so important when planning your landscape
to take note of the mature size of the chosen
tree and never to overplant to attain a quick
                effect.

This form of non-planned cramming of the garden
with a multitude of unrelated species will
                eventually produce spindly, unhealthy and
unattractive specimens of trees that will require
expensive and time consuming thinning out at some
                later time.

With thought and planning, considering climate
and mature size of trees, you can add much beauty
to your garden and increase the value of your
                home ten-fold.

Evergreen trees can add privacy and protection
from severe climate conditions, while deciduous
trees can protect your home from the sun in
summer and allow the sun through during winter.

A dual blessing is provided by trees that blossom
in their season, trees that supply us with fruits
for our table and deciduous trees which give us a
magnificent display of leaf colour in the Autumn
then drop their leaves to supply us with an
                abundance of precious composting material.

Trees from the nursery generally come in
containers for planting at any time of the year.

Evergreen trees are best planted in mid-autumn so
that their roots have time to establish before
                winter sets in.

Deciduous trees are best planted in late winter
to early spring while still bare of foliage. They
then have a full seasons growth ahead to become
                established in.

Put your planting plan to paper marking in the
trees to scale at maturity. That way you can see
how the landsape will look when established and
it will assist you in selecting trees which are
                of a suitable size.
