Want to make your own CD-ROMs? Here's what we recommend. One-ofs and small quantities: Get a Philips CDD-522 CD-ROM recorder kit consisting of: CDD-522 double speed recorder Adaptec SCSI Adapter (your source hard disk may NOT be on the same adapter) SCSI II cable Corel Mastering Software 63 minute blank CDR disc This all costs $3400 from EMS Prof. Software Voice:+1(301)924-3594. Blank media is $11 to $12 depending on quantity and length. If you need to do audio, Mac/Unix, etc. stuff, you'll also need a better mastering software. These run from $1000 to $2000. If you need a search and retrieval engine, plan on another $2500++. Take a look at the DOS and Windows search programs for the PC Products Database in the \PRODUCTS directory of this CDROM. The DOS version is WORST case for speed (does everything wrong for a CDROM) and the Windows Help files are optimized for CDROM. To see an intermediate case, look at the other executables on this CDROM (Jokes, BestBytes, SBA\SBA.EXE, etc.) If you plan on making LOTS of copies of your CDROM: Get a 4mm DAT drive (about $800) and premastering software (about $500) and send the premastered image to DMI. For about $800 and $1.20 per copy, they'll produce CDROMs with two color artwork. The artwork can be done simply with an HP4M for $2 or with better quality from a printer for about $60 (plus delays).
