INTRODUCTION
Having accumulated icons from various public sources I
thought I'd put the lot together to save you searching
for the various files that I found.

Some people collect stamps .... it seems that I'm
collecting icons!

If you already have some icons you may well find
duplicates within this collection.

Also this file contains instructions on how to insert
icons into your Windows display.

The only icons I've excluded are:

1) Those that cause Windows to terminate! Some
icons I'd received had been corrupted and gave Windows a
nervous breakdown when I tried to view them.

2) XXX rated icons. I'm not a prude but I don't
wish to offend or violate the rules of any BBS. There
aren't that many around that I've found anyway. If more
appear I might compile a separate collection.

Most of these icons are for various programs, commercial
and public but some are replacements for the icons
supplied with Windows for accessories like Print Manager.

As far as I am aware all icons are public domain, if a
particular icon has breached your copyright please let me
know and I'll remove it immediately.

CONTENTS of ICONBAS1.ZIP

     README.TXT
     This file

     BASE1.ZIP
     The compressed collection of icons.

     SYSOP.TXT
     Some additional details for sysops.

USING BASE1.ZIP
You must expand this file again using PKUNZIP. It is a
ZIP within a ZIP! I did it that way to stop shocking you
with the sudden arrival of 750 new files!

All supplied icons have a .ICO extension.

It is suggested that you create a separate directory for
the icons to make management easier e.g. \WINDOWS\ICONS

As you are extracting the ZIP file PKZIP will warn you if
there is already a file/icon with the same name.

Since some icons have changed names from previous versions of
this icon collection I suggest you allow ALL icons to be
overwritten. i.e. If PKUNZIP says Overwrite Y/N? answer Yes.

VIEWING ICONS
With the large number of icons involved you need a
multiple icon viewer, the icon editors mentioned below
can only see one at a time.

Try MULTIPLE ICON VIEWER by Bob Novell. It is usually on
BBS's under the title VI101.ZIP

Mr Novell's neat little program will allow you to quickly
review and select the icons you like.

There is an icon for this program called VI.ICO

EDITING ICONS
To edit icons you have many programs to choose from.
These program will let you view one icon at a time and
change it or create your own new icons.

One of these is ICONDRAW by Philip Eskelin Jr. I found
it under the name ICONDR12.ZIP. Unlike some other icon
editors this one is a true windows application.

There is an icon for ICONDRAW attached to the program
itself.

Your BBS will undoubtedly have one or more icon editors
for you to try.

INSERTING ICONS
This is set out in your Windows manual but it doesn't
exactly glisten with clarity so you're forgiven for being
confused, as many others have been.

Step by step....

1) Bring up the PROGRAM MANAGER on the screen.

2) Single click the icon of the application you want to
give a new icon.

3) Choose from the pull down menu 'File' and from
that menu 'Properties...'.

4) Select the 'Change Icon' button.

5) Place the cursor in the 'File Name' box then type in
the drive, path and name of the icon you want. e.g.
C:\WINDOWS\ICONS\OZTRALYA.ICO

6) Click the 'View Next' button. The new icon should
now appear in the 'Change Icon' window.

7) When finished:
Click 'OK' to leave 'Change Icon'
       Click 'OK' to leave 'Properties'
The new icon will appear on the screen.

You're done!!!

A LITTLE ABOUT ICONS
If you look on your Windows directory you will NOT find
any .ICO files for the existing programs/accessories.
This is because programs designed specially for Windows
can include within the .EXE file one or more icons.

You don't have to use one of these included icons and
Windows will let you nominate a separate file containing
just the icon design. This is what this package
contains. By convention these separate icons all have
.ICO extensions.

THE FUTURE
I'll try to update this compilation occasionally. New
compilations will have a name like ICON_xxx.ZIP xxx
being the number of icons within. If you see a higher
number its a newer release.

If the collection gets bigger I may release another base set
of icons called ICN_BASx.ZIP

If you find/draw new icons please let me know (see below)

HISTORY OF THIS COLLECTION
Previous versions of this collection were:

ICON470.ZIP 93k 6 Feb. 1991
ICON563.ZIP 112k 23 Feb. 1991

Then the concept of a Basic Collection was introduced
The first is:

ICONBAS1.ZIP 151k 4 Apr. 1991

With an additional set of icons called

ICON_313 67k 4 Apr. 1991
