                                         (1)
                                     Introduction

From the beginning of mankind, humans have needed to
obtain quantitative information about the physical world.
This need has evolved and matured at the necessary rate to
keep pace with mans understanding of life and matter. While
it is unknown what the cave man used as a unit of measure
for distance, it is almost certain that he had one. The
distance from his home to his hunting grounds was as
important to him as that of Pluto to Venus is to the modern
             day astrological scientist.

There are many reasons we have acquired numerous units
of measurements for the same physical quantities. Over time
there has been a maturing of our ability to record what we
experience in a more logical and more accurate scientific
form. This leaves us with older methods to relate to newer
ones. In some cases, newer and better systems have not taken
on international acceptance. This has been the case with the
lack of recognition of the metric system in the United
States. The U.S. government feels that such a change would
have a detrimental financial effect and that it would not be
             worth adopting.

Some measurement systems have adopted a nostalgic
relationship with certain fields of endeavor. From gold in
troy ounces to flour in cups and lumber in board feet,
tradesman are reluctant to let go of their measurement
systems. It is highly unlikely that such an embedded
relationship will change quickly over time.

Irrelevant of the reasons for the numerous ways we have
come to measure, the need for conversions from one unit to
another will touch each of us in our daily lives.

Macro Conversions was developed to provide a
convenient, single source for the derivation of conversions.
There are almost 3000 conversional relationships that can be
obtained using this package. It was intended primarily to
assist the technologist, scientist and student of the
sciences in their day to day activities. However, it is a
powerful informational tool for anyone with a need or
             interest in measurement conversions.

                               Using Macro Conversions

             Installation:

Macro Conversion can be run from the floppy
distribution disk or can be installed on your hard drive. To
run this software from floppy, place the disk in your A:
drive and type A:CONVERT <ENTER>. To install on your hard
drive, place your disk in drive A: and type A:INSTALL
<ENTER>. This will create a sub-directory on your C: drive
called MEASURE. To operate the program, type CD MEASURE
             <ENTER> and then CONVERT <ENTER>.

Note: A: is used for an example, this can be A: or B:.

             Selection Boxes:

Micro Conversion will power up and display a copyright
notice for a few moments. Next, two large selection boxes
and three buttons will appear. The selection box on the left
side of the screen is the source conversion box. This is the
box that you will select the units of measurements you wish
to convert from. The top of the box will be labeled "From
List". The selection box on the right side of the screen is
the "To" conversion box. This is the box that you will
select the units of measurements you wish to convert to. The
top of the box will be labeled "To List". On the right
border of each box are four active elements. The red up
arrow, the red down arrow, the shaded gray elevator shaft
             and the black elevator box.

             Scrolling Down:

All units of measurements, both in the "From" and "To"
lists are in alphabetical order. There are two ways to
scroll down the list. The first is to place your cursor on
the red down arrow and press the left mouse button. This
will move the list down one element at a time. Holding down
the mouse button will cause the list to continue to scroll
down until the button is released or the bottom of the list
is reached. The second method will page the list downward.
This is accomplished by placing the cursor on the elevator
shaft (shaded gray bar) below the elevator box (black box).
Pressing the left mouse button will page the list down and
place the last item on the list at the top.

             Scrolling Up:

Scrolling up is accomplished in much the same way as
scrolling down. To scroll up an element at a time, place the

cursor on the up arrow and press the left mouse button. To
page up the list place the cursor on the elevator shaft
above the elevator box and press the left mouse button.

Selecting a Unit to Convert From:

Any unit that is visible in the "From Unit" box can be
selected. This is accomplished by placing the cursor on the
unit of interest and pressing the left mouse button.

Selecting a Unit to Convert To:

Any unit that is visible in the "To Unit" box can be
selected. This is accomplished by placing the cursor on the
unit of interest and pressing the left mouse button.

             Obtaining a Conversion:

Once a "From Unit" and a "To Unit" have been selected,
the lower two lines of the screen will display the result of
the conversion. For example, if you wish to convert
Centimeters to Inches, select Centimeters in the "From Unit"
box and Inches in the "To Unit" box. The result will be
             displayed as follows:

There are 2.54 cm in an inch.

             Reversing a Conversion:

If you wish to reverse the current conversion, place
the cursor on the reverse button [<-->] and press the left
mouse button. Given the above example, if the reverse button
was pressed, the following would be displayed:

There are 0.3937 inches in a cm.

             Scaling a Conversion:

To scale a conversion, select the "From Unit" and "To
Unit" and press the enter button [ENT.]. This will cause a
dialog box to appear. In the above example, the dialog would
             read:

Please enter the number of cm you wish to convert to
             inches ?

If you were to enter 7.63, the screen would display:

There are 19.38 cm in 7.63 inches.

             Exiting:

To exit Macro Conversions, press the exit button
[EXIT]. This will return you to the DOS command line.

             Note:

Good engineering practice requires that any and all
conversions be verified through multiple sources. In
addition, all computations should be made with the
appropriate understanding of numeric accuracy and rounding
             errors.
