NEC TECHNOLOGIES, INC, SHIPS IMAGE RISCSTATION AND EXPRESS RISCSERVER
SYSTEMS; NEW LINE OF MIPS RISC-BASED SYSTEMS ARE OPTIMIZED FOR WINDOWS NT

Boxborough, Mass.. March 28, 1994--NEC Technologies is meeting the growing
demand for high-performance Windows NT systems by shipping its first
series of RISC-based systems--the NEC Image RISCstation and the NEC
Express RISCserver systems.

Developed by NEC in conjunction with Microsoft, the NEC Image RISCstation
and NEC Express RISCserver systems incorporate the 64-bit NEC VR4400
family of microprocessors based on the MIPS RISC (reduced instruction set
computing) architecture. The systems are designed to enhance Windows NT
performance by taking advantage of features such as multi-tasking and
multi-threaded I/O operations.

"By developing these products specifically for Windows NT, we're enabling
the development and deployment of new, advanced multi-tasking,
client/server applications on powerful advanced workstations and RISC
servers--at prices comparable to conventional PCs" said Mike Mitsch,
manager of NECT's Computer Systems Marketing Division.

Many software companies such as Microsoft, Executive Software, SQL Business
Systems, Inc., and Wellcome Software Technologies currently have
applications such as SQL Server revision 4.21, FILE ALERT for Windows NT,
SQL Stor, and Texim Project, respectively to run on the NEC Image
RISCstation and NEC Express RISCserver systems.

NEC Image RISCstation: The Ideal Platform for Microsoft Office Professional
Applications Under Windows NT

In addition to Microsoft's Windows NT 3.1 operating systems, the
entry-level configuration of the NEC Image RISCstation system includes an
NEC VR4400 PC CPU operating at 133MHZ internally/66MHZ externally with an
on-chip floating point co-processor, 32KB internal cache, and 128KB
secondary cache using a write-through design. Additional features include
16MB of RAM expandable to 128MB, 10baseT Local Bus Ethernet, Local Bus
SCSI-II, Local Bus Video, and 1MB of Video RAM, expandable to 2MB.

The NEC Image RISCstation system also features the performance-enhanced I/O
and CPU architecture (PICA), a video/memory bus structure that supports
CPU clock speeds up to 200MHs, and four Director Memory Access (DMA)
channels designed specifically for the Windows NT multi-threaded I/O
environment.

NEC Express RISCserver: MIPS RISC Performance brought to the Windows NT
Environment

The standard configuration of the NEC Express RISCserver includes
Microsoft's Windows NT 3.1 operating system, and an NEC VR4400MC CPU
module operating at 150MHZ internally/75MHz externally with an on-chip
floating point co-processor, 32KB internal cache and 1MB secondary cache
using a write-back design. The system also supports a second CPU module
upgrade for dual processing with cache coherency.

The NEC Express RISCserver system comes standard with 32MB of RAM
expandable to 128MB on the system motherboard, and up to 512MB of total
system RAM when using an optional memory expansion board. Other features
include: local bus graphics with 1MB DRAM for 256 colors for server-based
applications; a new high-performance 64 bit "Memory Bus Graphics" video
slot for an optional VXL jaguar graphics adapter for 1280 X 1024
resolution support; 10BaseT Ethernet; dual SCSI-II channels; an integrated
2400 BPS data/9600 BPS send/receive fax modem; and, an NEC MultiSpin
CD-ROM drive.

A hardware RAID disk array, enabling hop flop capabilities for fault
tolerant drives supporting both the 540MB and 1 GB Fast SCSI-II hard
drives, is also available as options for the NEC Express RISCserver
system.

MultiRlSC Computing Architecture

Each Express RISCserver system features NEC's exclusive advanced MultiRISC
Computing Architecture, dividing the system into four separate subsystems:
processor, I/O, video, and memory. MultiRISC is the first architecture to
bring multi-processor RISC and multi-threaded I/O capability to the
WINDOWS NT market.

Providing memory and control access for the CPU and I/O systems, the
MultiRISC design breaks the boundaries imposed by traditional PC
architectures by providing direct memory access (DMA) control for all I/O
devices, thereby improving overall system performance. The
high-performance design incorporates a 128-bit wide memory path for the
64-bit VR4400 CPUs, a CPU bus bandwidth of 400MB/second, video access for
the memory bus, and internal cache for all I/O performance for advanced
windows NT applications.

Pricing, Distribution, and Warranty Information

The NEC Image RISCstation and the NEC Express RISCserver systems are
available from selected, authorized resellers at estimated selling prices
of under $3,800 for a workstation and under $10,000 for a server. The NEC
Image RISCstation and NEC Express RISCserver systems feature three-year,
limited warranties.
