PROXIM SHIPS INDUSTRY'S FIRST 2.4 GHZ FREQUENCY HOPPING SPREAD SPECTRUM
WIRELESS LAN ADAPTER

RangeLAN2/ISA Represents the First Wireless LANProduct to Incorporate High
Speed Frequency Hopping Technology Recently Adopted by the IEEE 802.11
Standards Committee

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 30, 1994 -- Proxim, Inc., the world's leading
supplier of spread spectrum wireless networking technology, today
announced that RangeLAN2/ISA, the first product in its RangeLAN2 family of
high speed wireless local area networking (LAN) products, has begun to
ship in volume. RangeLAN2/ISA is the wireless data industry's first
commercially available 2.4 GHz frequency hopping spread spectrum product,
a technology many analysts believe will become the worldwide standard for
wireless local area data communications. RangeLAN2/ISA is also the first
wireless LAN product to incorporate the high speed frequency hopping
technology recently approved by the IEEE 802.11 committee as part of its
proposed draft standard.

RangeLAN2/ISA is a wireless LAN adapter that fits into the expansion slot
of PC/AT and PC/AT desktop PCs and network servers. RangeLAN2/ISA provides
an easy-to-install wireless extension to existing wired client/server LANs
for desktop locations that are difficult or expensive to wire. It can also
be used as a stand-alone peer-to-peer networking solution in smaller
companies or departments. With Proxim's unique radio networking
architecture, any RangeLAN2/ISA that is connected to a wired LAN can
function as the base station or access point for other RangeLAN2 systems
not physically wired to the network.

RangeLAN2/ISA's uncompressed data rate of 1.6 Mbits/second per channel
exceeds the data rate requirements of most standard PC applications,
making it an ideal wireless platform for high-speed LAN environments.
RangeLAN2/lSA also delivers the longest range of any wireless LAN product
in its class -- operating at a distance of up to 500 feet in normal office
locations and up to l 000 feet in open space environments. RangeLAN2/ISA
provides transparent access to standard wired LAN environments and ships
with ODI and NDIS drivers that support most standard LAN operating
systems, including NetWare, NetWare Lite, LAN Manager, Windows for
Workgroups and LANtastic.

"The commercial availability of RangeLAN2/ISA represents a significant
milestone for both Proxim and the wireless LAN industry" said David King,
president and CEO of Proxim. "It is the first of a new generation of high
speed wireless LAN products to ship, which will open up major horizontal
and vertical markets previously untapped. Because of its unique high speed
radio architecture and industry leading wireless software protocols,
RangeLAN2/ISA is designed to be a generation ahead, even at its
inception."

RangeLAN2/ISA Applications

RangeLAN2/ISA is uniquely designed for desktop wireless connectivity in
situations where wiring of LANs is difficult or physically impractical,
such as older buildings and manufacturing or warehouse locations.
RangeLAN2/ISA is ideal for LAN environments with frequent moves, adds and
changes, or situations where high labor and material costs make cable
installation prohibitively expensive. RangeLAN2/ISA also offers a low-cost
alternative to wired networks in small businesses, classrooms and home
offices.

Proxim's existing RangeLAN/ISA product will continue to be marketed for
lower speed LAN applications such as E-mail, printer sharing, and terminal
emulation, as well as for mobile computing solutions in vertical markets
like health care, manufacturing, distribution and retailing.

RangeLAN2/ISA Spread Spectrum Architecture

Unlike Proxim's original RangeLAN/ISA adapter which utilizes direct
sequence spread spectrum technology in the 902 - 928 MHz frequency band,
RangeLAN2/ISA is based on frequency hopping spread spectrum technology in
the 2.4 - 2.4835 GHz band. RangeLAN2/ISA delivers an uncompressed data
rate of 1.6 Mbps per channel with 15 independent channels available. This
multi-channel approach enables 15 independent wireless LANs to operate
within the same physical space, effectively increasing the aggregate
capacity of RangeLAN2 networks by fifteen-fold. Depending on traffic and
utilization patterns, network managers can add users and subnets in a
scalable fashion and load balance across networks.

On March 9, 1994, the IEEE 802.11 Standards Committee approved a Proxim
proposal for high-speed frequency hopping wireless LANs as part of its
proposed draft standard, which is expected to be finalized by early 1995.
This proposal calls for four-level Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (4GFSK)
modulation to achieve high-speed data transmission in frequency hopping
wireless LAN environments with a fallback to two-level GSFK for
communications with lower speed frequency hopping systems. RangeLAN2/ISA
utilizes this 4GFSK/2GFSK modulation technique and is the only spread
spectrum wireless LAN product implementing a high-speed frequency hopping
option. While the initial RangeLAN2 version features a 1.6 Mbps
uncompressed data rate across each of 15 independent channels, the fastest
frequency hopping design offered by any vendor, the product line will be
tuned to conform to the 2.0 Mbsp/1.0 Mbps proposed standard as the IEEE
802.11 standard gets nearer to completion and ratification.

Pricing and Availability

RangeLAN2/ISA is list priced at $595 Other members of the RangeLAN2 family
include RangeLAN2/PCMCIA, which enables portable computer users to access
existing wired client/server networks or to communicate on a peer-to-peer
basis with other RangeLAN2 systems, and RangeLAN2/Access Point, a wireless
local bridge that provides transparent bridging to wired Ethernet LANs.
Both RangeLAN2/Access Point and RangeLAN2/PCMCIA are scheduled to ship
commercially in Q294.

Proxim, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a public company
which was founded in 1984 to develop and market wireless networking
solutions and has shipped over 60,000 spread spectrum radio products to
date. Proxim's shares are traded on the NASDAQ National Market System
under the symbol PROX.
