NCD X TERMINALS GAIN ENERGY STAR COMPLIANCE; NEW 21-INCH MONITOR ADDED TO
LINE

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 4, 1994 -- Network Computing Devices has
inaugurated a program to make its family of X terminals compliant with the
Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star guidelines for reducing
power generated by computing equipment.
New NCD X terminals will offer a power-management capability that
automatically reduces a monitor's power when keyboard and mouse have been
idle for a user-specified period. This will cut power consumption by more
than 80 percent, from a peak of 170 watts to the 30 watts or less mandated
by the Energy Star program.

Available at no extra charge, the power-management capability will ship
this month with NCD's two 14-inch color X terminals, the ECX14 and MCX14;
and the new 21-inch NCD21c (see below). NCD plans to make the feature
available on its 17- and 19-inch color X terminals by mid-summer, and on
its remaining color products by the end of 1994.

Most existing NCD X terminals can be made Energy Star-compliant through the
use of a device such as Combinova's WATTLESS 51 VDI Power Saver, available
from electronic component suppliers.
"In the X terminal industry it is the monitors that typically consume most
of a system's energy -- our bases have long been compliant with Energy
Star guidelines," said Judy Estrin, NCD president and CEO. "Screen savers
are not enough; they simply blank the screen but continue to bum as much
energy as before.

"Now NCD is offering monitors capable of lower power consumption, along
with a feature that puts those monitors into a low-power state when not in
use," Estrin said. "This not only saves power but affects the customer's
bottom line. Information from Pacific Gas & Electric indicates that a
business with 1,000 Energy Star-compliant systems can save up to $100,000
a year."

The Energy Star Computers Program is a partnership effort by the
Environmental Protection Agency and the computer industry to promote
energy-efficient computers, monitors and printers to reduce pollution
caused by power generation. Energy Star specifications state that a device
must be able to enter a low-power state, utilizing 30 watts or less of
power when inactive.

New 21-inch Monitor Joins NCD Family

Among the Energy Star-compliant products is NCD's first 21-inch monitor,
offered with NCD's MC88100 RISC-based electronics as the NCD21c. A
multi-sync monitor with the same 1280- x 1024-pixel resolution and 70-Hz
refresh rate as that used in NCD's popular 19-inch NCD19c, the new unit
offers over 10 percent greater display area without consuming any more
desktop space.

"Several categories of user need to display many windows simultaneously,"
Estrin said. "Without needing greater resolution, they would like more
screen space to make viewing easier. A network management application
might require that a logical network map, a physical layout, node
descriptions and a list of alarm conditions be on the screen at the same
time. Likewise, stock traders and process control operators need to
display a great deal of information at once."

The NCD21c is priced at $5,795, including keyboard, mouse and Ethernet
interface.

Network Computing Devices, Inc., formed in February 1988, provides
information-access solutions for client-server computing environments. NCD
is the leading worldwide supplier of X Window System terminals, with a
broad family of color and monochrome units, and makes PC-X server software
products which integrate Microsoft Windows- and DOS-based PCs into X/UNIX
networks. The company's Z-Code division supplies the Z-Mail family of
cross-platform electronic-mail and messaging software for open-systems
environments. NCD is publicly traded over the counter on the NASDAQ
National Market System under the symbol NCDI.
