Hands-On Internet
A Beginning Guide for PC Users

Englewood Cliffs, NJ, January 31, 1994 -- Can you imagine driving a car
without practicing with an experienced driver or without a drivers
education class? There would be accidents and frustrated drivers
everywhere! Until now, PC users had to learn how to travel on the
Internet, the worldwide electronic superhighway, without any practice or
hands-on training. PTR Prentice Hall's Hands-On Internet: A Beginning
Guide for PC Users, by David Sachs and Henry Stair, is a series of eight
on-line tutorial sessions that lead PC users through the Internet. The
book is available now.

PC users, don't get lost on the Internet! Written by experienced Internet
users, this new book will help you get started exploring the Internet with
a PC, even if you're a non-techie. Gently, Sachs and Stair take you
through the Internet with eight tested tutorials. The authors show you how
to start, where to start, and how to explore the Internet. Hands-On
Internet includes a disk with communications software that you will need.
All you need is your PC, a service provider and a modem. If you don't have
a modem, the book includes a money-saving offer for a modem from Hayes, a
leading manufacturer of modems in the United States. The book also
includes discount coupons from service providers.

Eight easy-to-follow online tutorials show you exactly how to send e-mail,
participate in Internet mailing lists and newsgroups, and access files on
computers around the world. Step-by-step, Sachs and Stair explore the
Internet with you, showing you how to:

* Access State Department Travel Information,

* Obtain long range forecasts, ski conditions and earthquake
  reports from the Weather Underground,

* Learn the latest findings on Project Magellan from the National
  Space Science Data Center.

Hands-On Internet gets you up and running on the Internet as fast as
possible. Just like learning to drive a car, you don't want to drive on a
highway without practicing on local roads. Each session builds upon what
you learned earlier, so that by the end of the book you are ready to
travel the Internet superhighway on your own.

About the Software ...

Telix Lite is a commercial communications software program designed
especially for DOS platforms. Telix Lite is easy to use and allows PC
users to access the Internet via a dial-up connection. Once you have a
service provider, all you need to connect is a PC and a modem. With Telix
Lite, you have FULL Internet connectivity. The software allows you not
only to perform common Internet activities such as sending mail and
participating in newsgroups, but to transfer files from computers around
the world to your PC and to use full FTP (file transfer protocol)
capabilities. Telix Lite is a limited version of Telix Communications
Software. However, all key connectivity features are included in this
version.

Here's what Internet Service Providers say ...

"For PC users this is really the one book they need to become fully
functional on the Internet... One stop shopping in Internet how-to books.
This book is a major step forward in demystifying the Internet for the
novice user. It strips away the folklore and gets right to the heart of
what you can do with the Internet and how to do it." -- Alison Brown,
Director, OARnet

"Hands-On Internet should bring down the level of knowledge required for
Internet access ... the presentation will open certain aspects of the
Internet to more novice users." -- Thomas A. Powell, Analyst/Programmer,
CERFnet
