Beame & Whiteside BW-Connect 3.1 Adds VxDs, Support for Microsoft and
Novell Protocol Stacks

New Software Release Extends NFS Connectivity to Microsoft and LAN
Workplace Users, Offers Enhanced Support for DOS and Windows

April 11, 1994 -- RALEIGH, N.C. -- Beame & Whiteside Software today
announced that the new versions of the company's flagship connectivity
software products for DOS and Windows, BW-TCP and BW-NFS, will be released
next month as BW-Connect TCP and BW-Connect NFS V3.1. Foremost among the
features included in the new client software release is support for
Windows Virtual Device Drivers or VxDs, and extended support for TCP
sockets. Beame & Whiteside will also be offering the same NFS support
software to run over Microsoft's TCP/IP protocol stack, or to support
Novell's TCP/IP for LAN Workplace.

"With the release of BW-Connect 3.1, we now offer our customers a choice;
they can either load the TCP/IP protocol stack as a TSR to support DOS
applications, or they can load it as a VxD to optimize connectivity for
Windows applications," said Graham Wright, Product Manager for Beame &
Whiteside. "We've also broken out the NFS applications so they can run on
third-party TCP/IP stacks, such as those from Microsoft and Novell. By
repositioning our products this way, we expect to be in a better position
to serve our customers' connectivity needs as they consider migration to
the new Chicago and Daytona Windows platforms."

Better Support for Windows than Ever Before

With added support for Windows Virtual Device Drivers in BW-Connect TCP and
BW-Connect NFS V3.1, Beame & Whiteside customers will now be able to
provide open systems connectivity for DOS applications by loading the
TCP/IP and NFS protocol stacks as a terminate-and-stay-resident program,
or they can take full advantage of Windows by loading the software as a
VxD. When loaded from DOS as a TSR, both the workstation's DOS and Windows
applications will have access to the TCP/IP and NFS protocol stacks. Beame
& Whiteside's TCP/IP protocol stack about 30K of base memory, and with the
NFS protocol stack it consumes less than 60K. And protocol stacks can be
loaded into high memory so they consume no base memory at all.

When installed from Windows as a VxD driver, BW-Connect TCP and NFS deliver
more efficient connectivity performance for Windows applications by
eliminating the scheduling and performance problems associated with DLLs.
And by using virtual device drivers, Windows users don't consume any of
their workstation's DOS RAM so workstation memory remains available for
application software.

BW-Connect TCP and BW-Connect NFS V3.1 now feature more extensive support
for the Windows Sockets or WinSock standard as well. The new release can
support up to 64 simultaneous Windows sockets, as opposed to 20 sessions
in the previous release, which means that Windows client can maintain up
to 64 simultaneous connections to support X Windows sessions, TELNET
sessions, FTP transfers, etc.

BW-Connect TCP and NFS V3.1 are also easier to install with a new
Windows-based Install program, as well as to configure, and maintain than
ever before thanks to a new Windows-based utility program. A BW-Connect
NFS client can also be configured to give other users access to the
workstation to support TELNET sessions, to transfer files using the File
Transfer Protocol (FTP), to establish interactive session using TALK, to
support print services, and to perform other network functions.

The BW-Connect NFS client can support up to 24 remote drives and 8 remote
printers. It also includes support for POP2/3 electronic mail, terminal
emulation (including VT220, VT100, VT52, and TN3270), and a graphical
drag-and-drop FTP program. BW-Connect also supports NetBIOS over TCP/IP,
and can function as a print gateway when multiple networks are loaded. It
is compliant with the Windows Sockets 1.1 standard.

NFS Versions Now Available For Microsoft and Novell

BW-Connect V3.1 is now being offered in four configurations. BW-Connect TCP
is Beame & Whiteside's core TCP/IP protocol support for DOS and Windows.
BW-Connect NFS for DOS and Windows is Beame & Whiteside's NFS client
software and includes BW-Connect TCP. Beame & Whiteside is also offering
BW-Connect NFS for Microsoft and BW-Connect NFS for LAN Workplace, which
provide the same INET daemon (INETD) NFS client services incorporated into
BW-Connect NFS for DOS and Windows, but which run over either Microsoft's
TCP/IP protocol stack or Novell's TCP/IP protocol stack for LAN
Workplace.

Beame & Whiteside's NFS INETD was developed using the INETD model commonly
found in UNIX environments. Beame & Whiteside's INETD remains in the
background on a Windows workstation, waiting for connection requests from
remote clients. When the workstation receives a service request, it
automatically starts the appropriate server daemon, whether it is TELNETD,
FTPD, TNAMED, TIMED, TALKD, nTALKD, COOKIED, or a user-supplied service.
Using this approach, server resources are consumed on a demand basis,
rather than requiring the user to start each server connection manually
and leave them running in the background. In addition, the INETD can
generate numerous connections to support the same service, allowing
multiple users to simultaneously perform file transfers, TELNET functions,
or other activities.

All four products are expected to ship to customers in mid-May. BW-Connect
TCP for DOS and Windows retails for $245, BW-Connect NFS for DOS and
Windows sells for $349, BW-Connect NFS for Microsoft sells for $299, and
BW-Connect NFS for LAN Workplace sells for $199. The BW-Connect NFS V3.1
family of products will be shown for the first time at NetWorld+Interop
'94 Las Vegas, May 4-6.
