there are several differences
when reading for a long period
of time that stresses the eyes.

*   Our   eyes    have    become
accustomed to reading little
words on a printed page. We
move our eyes rapidly, hundreds
of times a second when reading.
The printing on a page is the
size it is, because that is the
easiest to read. If you have
fairly good eyes, have you
noticed that large-print child-
ren's books are actually harder
to read? This is because they
force us to move our eyes

farther than we are used to to
identify each word. The same is
true of the large letters on a
computer screen. Those of you
who have EGA or VGA systems
might try the smaller 43 or 50
line characters. (I'm experi-
menting with it, but have no
conclusions yet.)

* Try reading a book held
vertical and above eye-level
sometime. Of course your arms
will tire, but so will your neck
and eyes. We're not designed to
concentrate in this position. We
tend to lay books horizontally
