WHITE PINE SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES NETWORK AND CONFERENCE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
FOR AUDIO AND VIDEO CONFERENCING

White Pine Is First to Address Bandwidth Issues with theWhite Pine
Reflector' Software

NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA, (May 8, 1996) -- White Pine Software, Inc., a
leader in videoconferencing over the Internet, is the first to address
network and conference management issues for real time audio and
videoconferencing over TCP/IP networks, including the Internet. The White
Pine Reflector' software is now available on eleven UNIX platforms, and
Windows 95 and Windows NT versions are already in beta with a ship date
planned for later this month. The Reflector server software allows users
to conduct and manage meetings over the Internet, TCP/IP networks and the
MBone. It enables multiple Enhanced CU-SeeMe videoconferencing users to
conduct multiple video/audio and chat group discussions, collaborate over
documents with a virtual WhitePineBoard and "cybercast" to large audiences
(broadcast).

"A Reflector can best be explained as server technology which allows for
scaleable group conferences and LIVE broadcasts or 'cybercasts' using
CU-SeeMe," states David O. Bundy, North American Vice President of
Engineering at White Pine. "We've included advanced features in the
Reflector, such as network bandwith control, video prunning, audio
prioritization and a full dynamic set of conference controls. It is
capable of Multicast IP on LANs, WANs and the Internet MBone." He
concludes the Reflector is key for distributing group conferences and
cybercasts over the Internet.

White Pine Reflectors are intelligent video broadcasting servers, as well
as bandwidth management savvy agents. The Reflector's unique design of
automatic bandwidth detection makes accommodations of user's various
bandwidths while balancing the needs of the network system as a whole. The
Reflector can adjust on-the-fly transmission rates of specific individual
users if packet loss is running too high, because of heavy network
traffic. Also, the data for supporting applications like the
WhitePineBoard or chat window are more efficiently managed by the
Reflector.

Reflectors have the ability to set minimum transmission rates that will
adjust to the variety of connections to the network they may be using,
i.e. ISDN, modem or LAN connection. If network traffic is too heavy for a
reliable conference, the transmission will remain at the lowest setting
and only move up when the network is less congested. This is an important
tool for Network Managers and ISPs to balance the needs of their other
non-videoconferencing network users during peak load.

With a user-base approximated at half-a-million users, CU-SeeMe audio and
video conferencing software is perhaps the most widely used
videoconferencing software on the Internet today. Users can optimize the
use of Enhanced CU-SeeMe with the White Pine Reflector, which adds both
color and improved video/audio compression, offering user benefits and
reducing network traffic. CU SeeMe audio and video conferencing has
changed the way both organizations and end-users communicate over the
Internet and TCP/IP networks. The benefits and applications continue to
grow for business, education, end-user and SOHO markets as more people
have access to this technology.
