SAGEWARE INTRODUCES KNOWLEDGE SETS FOR VERITY'S LINE OF INFORMATION
SEARCHING PRODUCTS

PRE-DEFINED SEARCHES SIMPLIFY SPECIFIC INFORMATION NEEDS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, MAY 28, 1996 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY) and Sageware,
Inc., a value-added reseller of Verity's search and retrieval products,
announced today the availability of Knowledge Sets, predefined "topics"
for use with the topic family of search, retrieval and information-sharing
products.

Topics are a unique and powerful feature of the topic product line,
enabling users to create, share, and reuse robust searching terms
incorporating relationships, acronyms, and relevance ranking, among other
criteria. Sageware's Knowledge Sets address specific information needs in
areas including the geopolitical, pharmaceutical, computer industry, and
legal environments.

"Verity is clearly leading the search market both in its technology and
major partnerships," said John Lehman, Founder and CEO of Sageware. "The
topic language allows not only the creation of complete and sophisticated
searches, but also hides the complexity from the user, producing the
highest quality results."

"Topics are a key differentiator of the Verity engine and applications,"
said Philippe Courtot, chairman and CEO of Verity, Inc. "The ability to
offer packaged sets of topics to Verity customers increases the speed and
depth of deployment for many search applications."

KNOWLEDGE SETS MAKE SEARCHING SIMPLE

Knowledge Sets organize search criteria into a "subject catalog," a
multi-level list of search concepts. Each set of search criteria is given
a "topicname." Topics may be viewed and executed by selecting a topic from
the subject catalog, or by using the topicname as a search term in any of
the topicR products. For example, the topicname "environment" may
represent a search incorporating evidence about pollution, recycling,
wildlife, and the ozone layer, among other criteria. When a user enters
the topicname "environment" or selects it from a list, the topicname is
expanded to include all the criteria associated with it, dramatically
enhancing the search results. Topics may be used in retrospective searches
and persistent "watcher agents" which automatically search newly arriving
information for user-specific interests.

TOPIC FINDS, FILTERS AND DELIVERS RELEVANT INFORMATION

Verity develops and markets the topic family of software tools and
applications that filter and organize relevant information stored in
Internet- and Intranet-based databases. Topic products provide rapid
search, retrieval and categorization of information, as well as real-time
monitoring and filtering of information from dynamic text streams. While
users of topic products can create and manage their own topicsets and
agentsets, Sageware's Knowledge Set products provide a cost-effective
alternative to the staff investment associated with creating, organizing,
and updating one or more topicsets.

Sageware's subject-specific Knowledge Sets incorporate search criteria well
beyond that available through thesaurus, dictionary or other generic
language knowledge bases used in other search and retrieval products.
These Knowledge Sets offer enhanced search productivity and shorter
training cycles because they enable users to conduct powerful searches
without having an in-depth knowledge of the subject or the query
language.

Knowledge Sets are ready to use with any topic application. Knowledge Set
licenses include quarterly updates. Initial topicsets are available now,
and new Knowledge Sets will be added frequently.
