Visix Software Raises the Bar in Distributed Java Computing

Leading Vendor in Distributed Object Technology Introduces a Java-Based
Environment with Unparalleled Abilities to Address Corporate Intranet
Development & Deployment Challenges

Reston, VA - May 28, 1996 - Visix Software Inc., a leading provider of
enterprise application development and deployment solutions, announced
today an unprecedented software product - code-named Eleven - which is
composed of two integrated components: a visual Java-specific integrated
development environment (IDE) and an Intranet Application Platform (IAP)
for production application deployment.

"Most existing Java-based or client/server tools are not suitable for the
new business computing environment," said Chuck Teubner, president and CEO
of Visix Software. "Browsers have become the new clients in the corporate
world, which combined with other Internet technologies, enable developers
to design applications that span computers, operating systems and
networks. With Eleven, corporate developers can build sophisticated Java
applications that can be deployed throughout an enterprise."

Using Eleven, corporate developers familiar with products like Microsoft's
Visual Basic or Borland's Delphi are now able to easily translate their
skills into a familiar development environment which provides rich Java
functionality without requiring them to learn the intricacies of more
complex programming languages.

With this announcement, Visix delivers a fully integrated application
development and deployment environment for Java. This environment includes
an advanced IDE with team development support, a Java compiler and a copy
of the Visix IAP, compatible with Sun's virtual machine for Java, for
inline testing. The Visix IAP introduces extraordinary performance
improvements and greatly expanded application functionality on Windows 95,
Windows NT, Unix, and Macintosh. Additionally, it overcomes Java's current
"least common denominator" approach to application portability removing a
major barrier to broader acceptance of Java as a business capable
language.

The Visix Intranet Application Platform (IAP) consists of a software-based
application delivery platform on each physical computer in a distributed
computing configuration. This rich object-based and distributed
application environment ensures consistent powerful functionality with
high performance on each platform. Additionally, it offers optimized
overall resource utilization through collaborative execution of
application components residing on multiple platforms.

Once developed, Eleven-built distributed application components will be
accessible and executable from within desktop browsers using a
Visix-provided launcher delivered as a Netscape Navigator or Microsoft
Explorer plug-in. As a result, Visix enterprise customers can further
leverage their investment in these "universal clients."

An Evolutionary Approach to Revolutionary Technology

Eleven builds on the current market momentum behind the Java language and
its role as a critical element of Internet/intranet-style distributed
computing. The basic computing model enabled by the features of Java is a
just-in-time deployment of common application components across
heterogeneous computing platforms with collaborative execution via
existing networking infrastructure.

Adistributed object architecture, Eleven is consistent with the distributed
object architecture that Visix Software has been evolving over the last 8
years. "Visix has the expertise, the accumulated relevant technology
assets and the head start in Java-based development to deliver a
distributed Java computing environment with unparalleled power,
flexibility and integrity," said Ben Martindale, vice president of
marketing. "By providing an easy-to-use development environment to create
component-based applications for intranets, Visix is well positioned to
take advantage of the movement towards this new style of computing."
