U.S Robotics Announces New Wireless Access System: First in a Series of
Wireless Infrastructure Products

SKOKIE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1996--U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ:USRX)
today announced its entry into the wireless data communication
infrastructure market with its new Wireless Access System for the Total
Control Enterprise Network Hub.

The access system, initially developed for analog circuit switched cellular
(CSC) networks, is the first in a series of wireless infrastructure
products to enable a wide variety of wireless data communications over
cellular and personal communications services (PCS) networks.

These products will enable wireless service providers to deliver advanced
information services that will give customers reliable and immediate
access to vital business tools and information such as the Internet and
e-mail.

"This move into the wireless infrastructure market is a natural extension
for U.S. Robotics because it enables us to expand on the flexibility of
our Total Control Enterprise Network Hub platform, create new mobile uses
for our Palm Computing and Mobile Communications Division products and
build on our state-of-the-art strengths in offering end-to-end solutions
in information access and network management technology," said Casey
Cowell, chairman, president and chief executive officer of U.S. Robotics.

GSM/TDMA/CDMA Migration

U.S. Robotics also plans to develop both infrastructure and client products
for current and emerging wireless technologies such as Global System for
Mobile Communications (GSM), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Time
Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) and
RAM Mobile Data.

"With the combination of increasing corporate support of telecommuting,
which creates a more mobile workforce, and the continuing demand for
access to information, we see wireless services having a major impact as
we enter the next century," said Ross Manire, senior vice president and
general manager of U.S. Robotics' Corporate/Systems Division.

"Access to information anytime, anywhere, is becoming a key component in
today's business environment. By expanding into the wireless
infrastructure, we intend to bring information access closer to the
customer and support the increasing demand for untethered communications,"
Manire said.

Shipping to Begin in Third Quarter

The new access system is based on U.S. Robotics' industry-leading Total
Control Enterprise Network Hub, a flexible platform that integrates local
and wide area networks.

U.S. Robotics plans to roll out its first data products for wireless
service providers beginning in the third quarter of 1996, targeted at the
growing need for wireless data access to such services as the Internet,
Intranet, file transferring and e-mail. The Wireless Access System will
provide cost-effective, reliable, high-speed data communication over
cellular networks.

Open Architectures Provide Easy-to-Implement Solutions

"With growing financial and competitive pressures, the ability to offer
value-added services such as data communications is critical to wireless
service providers. Additionally, market and technology pressures are
rapidly driving the need for open network architectures," Manire said.

"U.S. Robotics' wireless strategy is built on the foundation of open
architectures at both the client and infrastructure points of the
network.

"Our implementation of the emerging digital wireless technologies will
utilize an integrated Microsoft Windows NT server in the Total Control
Enterprise Network Hub platform, enabling application and middleware
software vendors to deliver standard `off-the-shelf' and custom-designed
software solutions," Manire said.

"Together with independent software vendors, we intend to build end-to-end
solutions to support advanced information services in the wireless
marketplace."

U.S. Robotics is also developing new products within its Palm Computing and
Mobile Communication divisions to take advantage of the growing wireless
environment, Manire said.

Palm is currently shipping the Pilot, a line of handheld electronic
connected organizers designed to work as companion products to desktop and
laptop computers, allowing personal information management both remotely
and on the desktop. U.S. Robotics' mobile communications unit produces
Megahertz brand products.

"We look forward to incorporating wireless technologies into the Palm
product line and working to provide end-to-end wireless solutions from the
network system to the pockets of individual users," said Jeff Hawkins,
chief technologist, Palm Computing Division of U.S. Robotics.

"Our Mobile Communications Division is well-positioned to meet the demands
of the growing mobile population," said Paul Nagel, vice president of
Advanced Product Development for the Mobile Communications Division of
U.S. Robotics.

"Our extensive knowledge of what mobile users want, combined with our
expertise in PC Card technology, data over cellular and integrated RF,
will enable us to provide the products for mobile communications
throughout the world."

In a recent analysis of market research from IDC, Forrester and other
sources, U.S. Robotics estimates that 80 percent of individuals accessing
the Internet and online services subscribe to providers who use the Total
Control Enterprise Network Hub as their high-speed access platform.

In the last two years alone, U.S. Robotics has shipped more than 350,000
ports to its service provider customers. U.S. Robotics is one of the
world's leading suppliers of products and systems that provide access to
information.

The company designs, manufactures, markets and supports remote access
servers, enterprise communications systems, desktop/mobile client products
and modems and telephony products that connect computers and other
equipment over analog, digital and switched cellular networks, enabling
users to gain access to, manage and share data, fax and voice
information.

Its customers include Internet service providers, regional Bell operating
companies, inter-exchange carriers and a wide range of other large and
small businesses, institutions and individuals. The company's fiscal 1995
sales were $889.3 million; sales for the first six months of fiscal 1996
were $819.3 million.
