U.S Robotics Broadens Remote Access Market: Company Is Well-Positioned to
Bring Remote Access to High-Growth Middle Market

SKOKIE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 13, 1996--U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ: USRX)
today announced a comprehensive program to broaden the market for remote
access equipment. In a move to expand the mid-range market more rapidly
and to a wider audience, the company has announced new pricing, features
and market education programs for its mid-range NETServer remote access
servers, making remote access simpler and more cost-effective for a larger
audience.

To speed mass-market implementation of remote access, and help companies
understand and implement remote access technology, U.S. Robotics is:

Reducing prices by up to 44 percent for its eight and sixteen port
remote access servers, making them significantly more cost-effective
 than competitive products.

Introducing NETStarter Auto Configuration Wizard, for automatic
 installation.

Simplifying remote client connectivity with Stampede Remote Office
 Gold client software.

Conducting a 15-city nationwide seminar series with leading
consulting and market research companies to educate the market
about remote access issues and technologies.

"We are taking the opportunity to bring U.S. Robotics' remote access
technology to the vast market of small and medium-sized businesses, which
represents a tremendous market for growth," said Ross Manire, senior vice
president and general manager of U.S. Robotics' Corporate/Systems
Division.

"We offer the customer several advantages, including our ability to provide
a complete range of end-to-end information access solutions and our
demonstrated expertise in high-end remote access systems," added Manire.
"Smaller customers can take advantage of our experience in developing
technology to meet the demands of our large network customers."

U.S. Robotics supplies technology for the world's largest Internet service
providers and online services; the company's remote access equipment
processes millions of calls every day into the Internet, global networks
and corporate LANs.

New Pricing Broadens Market for Remote Access

U.S. Robotics develops its own core technology, which is used across
product lines. This economy of scale allows U.S. Robotics to consolidate
manufacturing operations and leverage its volume shipments, reducing
manufacturing and component costs and bringing the cost savings to the
customer. Additionally, by controlling the core technology, U.S. Robotics
has the ability to easily redesign and cost-reduce products.

U.S. Robotics has leveraged these cost advantages in a price reduction of
up to 44 percent, making NETServer/8 and /16 the most cost-effective
integrated remote access servers in their market.

Product Name New List Price Original List Price
 NETServer/8 $ 4,495 $ 7,995
 NETServer/16 $ 8,495 $ 11,995

In a list price comparison of eight-port products from the top five remote
access server vendors according to International Data Corporation --
excluding U.S. Robotics from the top five -- U.S. Robotics' NETServer
solution is clearly more cost-effective. Competitive solutions are 45
percent higher, on average, than U.S. Robotics' NETServer:

Average List Price for Eight-Port Products

(no modems included): $535 per port
V.34 Modem List Price (Sportster V.34): + $279 per port
Total List Price for Comparative Solution: $814 per port
U.S. Robotics NETServer/8 List Price,
including integrated modems: $562 per port

"We're looking to significantly expand the audience for remote access
products with this announcement," said Manire. "With the vast installed
base of modems, the broad market is prepared to accept remote access
technology in full force. In effect, we aim to broaden the remote access
market by lowering the cost of entry to the customer and making powerful
technology easier to use."

NETStarter and Integrated Design Simplify Installation and Configuration

A key issue in implementing remote access for a small organization is ease
of use. To address this issue, U.S. Robotics has developed NETStarter, a
"configuration wizard" that greatly simplifies installation. For small
organizations with little or no support staff, this is an important
advantage. NETStarter is a Windows-based program that asks a series of
questions about how the product will be used, automatically configuring
the product based on the user's needs.

And because NETServer is a "single-box" solution, combining modems and
remote access server technology in a single product, installation is
further simplified, eliminating cabling and compatibility issues.

Award-Winning Stampede Provides Ease of Use, Performance

Ranked as the best PPP client for two years in a row by Network Computing
magazine, Stampede Technology's Remote Office Gold is very easy to use and
provides both remote node and remote control capabilities. Additionally,
users of Windows 95 can use its integrated remote access capabilities to
connect to networks using NETServer remote access servers.

Companies Gain Advantage of U.S. Robotics Remote Access Market Leadership

Small and medium-sized businesses and small ISPs can depend on U.S.
Robotics leadership in the remote access market. In a recent analysis of
market research from IDC, Forrester and other sources, U.S. Robotics
estimates that 80 percent of individuals accessing the Internet and online
services subscribe to providers who use the Total Control Enterprise
Network Hub as their high-speed remote access platform. U.S. Robotics also
supplies remote access technology to a wide variety of corporations,
universities and other organizations who have standardized on its
products.

U.S. Robotics also offers eight and sixteen port remote access servers for
ISDN and analog access to LAN-based resources. The NETServer/8 I-Modem and
the NETServer/16 I-Modem integrate the company's NETServer engine and
I-Modem(TM) technology in a single chassis, for transparent connectivity
to both analog and ISDN devices. The products include U.S. Robotics'
Universal Connect feature, to ensure connections at the highest speed
possible with remote users' analog or digital equipment.

U.S. Robotics is one of the world's leading suppliers of products and
systems that provide access to information. The company designs,
manufactures, markets and supports remote access servers, enterprise
communications systems, desktop/mobile client products and modems and
telephony products that connect computers and other equipment over analog,
digital and switched cellular networks, enabling users to gain access to,
manage and share data, fax and voice information. Its customers include
Internet service providers, regional Bell operating companies,
inter-exchange carriers and a wide range of other large and small
businesses, institutions and individuals. The company's fiscal 1995 sales
were $889.3 million; sales for the first six months of fiscal 1996 were
$819.3 million.
