The New Unisys Personal Computer Division: Freshness in a Familiar
Landscape

The world of the PC is a crowded, "me-too" kind of place. Therefore, it
should surprise no one that the perception among many IS and IT
professionals is that there is no real, discernible difference between
vendors or product, that PCs are commodities and price is the single
determining factor.

Unisys Aquanta PCs and PC servers feature the hottest HOTtech (hot
technologies) as soon as it becomes available, providing true
Build-To-Customer-Order, offering real worldwide support in 114 countries,
demonstrating quality through a DOA (Dead On Arrival) rate far below the
industry average, and still keeping prices competitive -- the Unisys
Personal Computer Division is showing there are, in fact, tremendous
differences between PC manufacturers and their products.

These differences become more pronounced as the market and computing
environment, itself, undergo profound change.

MIGRATING HEARD

The migration from mainframes and minicomputers to client/server has grown
from a whisper to a roar. Most importantly, it has placed the personal
computer center-stage in an arena formerly dominated by mainframes and
minis.

However, migrating from an old enterprise system to the new client/server
is not as simple as ordering up a thousand new boxes. There are installed
systems and networks to consider. Legacy systems often hold the business's
most valuable data and applications. And, the LANs and WANs that link
users to each other, to customers, and to vendors and colleagues around
the world are composed of a crazy-quilt of operating systems: variations
of UNIX operating systems, mainframe operating systems, IBM OS/2 and
Novell NetWare in addition to DOS, Microsoft Windows, Windows NT and
Windows 95. Therefore, companies are forced to integrate their new PCs
with both legacy systems and complex networks.

It falls to a company's Information Technology organization to ensure the
new system functions efficiently; that it delivers improved personal
productivity and provides mission-critical applications and data for
increasing the delivery of goods and services around the world.

THE NEW STANDARD FOR PC VENDORS: MAKING IT WORK

Unlike typical PC manufacturers who mainly focus on client/server
application products, Unisys already possesses a full complement of
integration tools, services and consulting expertise -- in addition to
world-class products. These are total solutions ready for immediate
implementation:

   Strategic planning
   Pre-deployment analysis
   System integration
   Application design
   Application software development
   Network planning
   Physical site installation
   Education and training
   System administration
   Network management
   Service and support
   Account management

Most vendors force their multi-national, multi-site customers to rely on a
hodgepodge of local dealers and distributors for service and support. Not
so with Unisys, one of the few companies able to deploy both service and
support personnel directly to a customer site. It is a single point of
contact, a single-source service, for all a customer's hardware and
software support -- even in the remotest areas of the globe.

DETAILING WORLDWIDE SUPPORT SERVICES

The Unisys Client Relationship Manager (CRM), who helps customized
client/server solutions, coordinates the company's global resource
network, providing customers access to the worldwide Information Services
organization. This is the group that handles consulting, strategic
analysis, research, process redesign, formation systems planning, systems
integration, solutions programming, and outsourcing.

When applications are ready for deployment, customers can take advantage of
Unisys Network Enable, which offers everything from physical network
cabling to network configuration and management:

   Installation planning
   Network design
   Product specification
   Systems and network integration
   Physical deployment
   Testing
   System administration
   Facilities management

Deployed systems are supported by the Global Customer Service Organization
(GCS), which offers two service plans; Surety in the United States and A
La Carte in Europe. Under these plans, customers tailor support to their
specific needs. Some plans call for 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year access
to engineers; others for on-site service, depot maintenance or mail-in
diagnostics and repair.

Because Unisys provides service and repair for other vendors' products,
customers with multivendor hardware are also "covered." In fact, nearly
half of all hardware under Unisys service contracts comes from third-party
vendors.

Software support is provided on-site or via telephone hotline. Engineers
certified in Microsoft, Novell, etc. staff support centers in the United
States, Europe, Latin America, and the Far East. In addition, Unisys
maintains training centers in the USA, UK, and Australia.

Finally, Unisys adds a mature Line of Business (LOB) focus, enabling
customers to leverage its vertical market information management expertise
in financial services, government, telecommunications, transportation,
health care management and other commercial industries.

WORLD-CLASS PRODUCTS: LAYING A SOLID FOUNDATION

To provide customers with a firm foundation for building client/server
applications, Unisys offers the Aquanta family, a comprehensive product
line featuring desktops, mobiles, and servers. Each system is thoroughly
tested to exacting environmental, safety and compatibility standards.

One of the industry's most powerful and scaleable server product lines,
Unisys Aquanta servers offer the broadest range of price points,
scalablity, and expansion options -- local departments and work groups to
corporate enterprise-wide, worldwide, multi-server applications. All
servers are shipped "complete," i.e., with a comprehensive suite of
network/server management tools to simplify distributed system management,
software distribution, network resource management, and configuration
control.

SERVERS

From low end, low cost to high end, high power, Aquanta Intel processor-
based PC LAN servers deliver an outstanding mix of processor scalability,
flexible storage capacity, convenient peripheral expansion and optional
fault resiliency in single, dual, quad-processor and rackmount
configurations.

Easy to deploy in existing (legacy) client/server environments, the servers
are qualified for just about every OS and network operating system
currently available: single and multiprocessor versions of Microsoft
Windows NT Server, the SCO UNIX OpenServer Family of products, Novell
NetWare and NetWare SMP, and IBM OS/2 WARP Connect Server.

MOBILES

In a recent Market Trends report, DataQuest, forecast that by the year
2000, the worldwide PC market would "grow to more than 100-million PCs
[with the fastest growth rate in] the mobile market [with] a 26 percent
compound annual growth rate."

Packing all the power of a desktop into a lightweight,
fit-in-your-briefcase, go-anywhere package, the Pentium processor-based
Aquanta MN modular notebook is the ultimate mobile computing system.
That's because its innovative modular design makes it the ultimate
multipurpose computer. Depending on any one of a number of possible
configurations, the Aquanta MN is a notebook; an office workhorse with the
same capabilities and capacity as a fully loaded, desktop workstation; and
a top-of-the-line multimedia system that's perfect for both on- and
off-site presentations. Offering advanced power-management features and
multimedia at a level of reliability, versatility and power that have
never before been seen in a mobile computer, the MN, with its unique bay
design lets users "load up" then "lighten up" depending on the
configuration for a particular job or trip.

DESKTOPS

Aquanta is also a line of desktop systems supporting Unisys integrated and
third-party software as well as client/server connectivity options.
Desktop systems range from the unique Aquanta SC, which is smaller than
any other Pentium class product on the market and brings Pentium processor
power to places few other PCs fit (airline counters, bank teller stations,
etc.) to the Aquanta DM mini-tower, incorporating state-of-the-art PC-bus
architecture, the newest processors from Intel, Plug and Play
capabilities, multimedia, and more.

MULTI-PLATFORM/MULTI-VENDOR SYSTEM AND NETWORK INTEGRATION

Of course, it's easier to implement a distributed client/server computing
model when all platforms and operating systems across an enterprise are
uniform. However, in the "real world," IT managers are often forced to
integrate existing platforms with new ones. They have to find ways to
blend multiple network topologies and protocols to leverage existing
computing resources and minimize the cost of implementing "new" systems.
That's why Unisys offers products that perform equally well in a variety
of O/S environments.

"NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE PARTS OR DESIGN, IF A PETULANT FACTORY WORKER
DROP-KICKS YOUR HARD DISK, YOUR PC MAY BE DOWN FOR THE COUNT. WHEN YOU BUY
A COMPUTER YOU'RE PAYING FOR THE SKILLS AND ATTITUDES OF THE PEOPLE WHO
PUT IT TOGETHER." -- PC WORLD

AT UNISYS, ONE PERSON PUTS TOGETHER ONE SYSTEM: FROM BEGINNING TO END

As the phrase implies, Build-To-Customer-Order (BTCO), means exactly that.
Unisys will custom build systems to customers' specifications through
BTCO, which allows customers to receive unique Unisys systems built "from
the box up." Customers receive the processor options, memory, cache,
peripherals, and expansion cards they want. The Unisys manufacturing plant
builds, configures and tests each system and customers receive a complete,
configured system. Under BTCO, Unisys will pre-load software options so
that a system can be up and running in minutes.

But, this is only half the BTCO story. The other half is how the systems
are assembled. Under BTCO, one person builds a complete system from start
to finish: hardware, software, and applications. There is no assembly
line. As a result, the Unisys employee building the system takes
tremendous pride in his or her work. It is not surprising that the Unisys
Dead On Arrival (DOA) rate is far below the industry average of 7%. BTCO
and the one person, one machine philosophy means an end to the impersonal
personal computer.

The "one person, one product" aspect of BTCO demonstrates that
craftsmanship and custom workmanship are compatible with hi-tech. It also
assures that customers will get Unisys products that have been built from
the box up by people who take pride in the quality products they produce.
This emphasis on quality has helped Unisys achieve Gartner Group's
Recommended Vendor List status.

GARTNER GROUP RECOMMENDED VENDOR. IS0-CERTIFIED.

Worldwide, there are more than 2,000 PC vendors. Of these, Gartner Group,
the respected, technology-research company, named fifteen to its Tier 1/2
list. As one of those companies, Unisys had to meet or exceed criteria
that included:

Shipping over 250,000 units per year.

Ensuring software compatibility through strict quality control.

Meeting environmental, ergonomic, electromagnetic, and noise standards.

Carrying a product line which meets Gartner Group client computing
 requirements.

 Showing positive cash flow.

Providing Gartner a certain level of comfort with the Unisys business
 plan

 Receiving ISO 9001 certification

Unisys was one of the first US-based companies to seek ISO registration.
Now, all Unisys manufacturing sites are ISO 9001 certified.

QUALITY "TOUGH-TESTED" PRODUCTS

During manufacture, every product is rigorously tested. Even before
arriving at Unisys, components are thoroughly inspected and tested by
suppliers who must demonstrate their internal quality control to maintain
their Unisys Approved Vendor List status.

On the Unisys assembly line, test stations are linked to a central
database. Automated reports from the database highlight problem areas so
corrective action may be taken. The idea is to collect data as early as
possible, analyze it, and, when there is a problem, immediately correct
the process that allowed it to happen.

After systems are assembled, samples are diverted to the Unisys Customer
Audit Order or CAO area. There, the completely configured systems are
checked against the customer's order. They are tested under power, and any
discrepancies in configuration, function, documentation --even minor
cosmetic flaws -- are recorded and corrected. Statistical sampling
techniques determine the percentage of systems subjected to CAO; the more
discrepancies found, the higher the sample rate.

To further assure quality, a number of units are diverted to the System
Configuration Laboratory, where they undergo 72 hours of exhaustive tests,
running both diagnostics and customer applications specially selected to
stress the system. The objective: to simulate the actual installation and
highlight any early life defects that might otherwise be missed.

When shipped, systems are sent with an Arrival Quality Report, which
customers and Unisys field personnel can use to point up possible
problems. Finally, customers have recourse to the Unisys Customer Return
Desk, which captures information about arrival quality and has the
authority to replace complete systems. That way the original unit can be
returned to the factory for analysis and corrective process action.

SOLVING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY COST A CUSTOMER TIME AND MONEY

The PC Division's rigorous testing program has been designed to bring out
the type of problems that might otherwise go unrecognized -- until a
customer's system failed. There are many instances of the Unisys System
Assurance group bringing these problems to light so they could be
corrected before wasting a customer's time and money.

In the case of one desktop component, when the system was rebooted after a
power outage, the BIOS would become corrupted and reset BIOS values. This
meant data on the hard drive would be lost. It was a problem Unisys made
sure was not passed along to its customers.

Another problem showed itself when an operating system software refused to
run with the PCI bus Unisys was using. The software vendor provided a fix
that worked when Unisys loaded the software, but did not do a "general"
fix. Because some customers might have chosen to load their own software,
shipping was held up until it the software vendor provided a fix for all
the software in question. Again, Unisys testing ensured a problem was not
passed along to customers.

The Unisys System Assurance group, which is responsible for compatibility
testing, views itself as the customer's advocate. Says Terry Wortman,
System Assurance manager for hardware in San Jose, California, "While some
products may work to the letter of the law, they have to work to the
spirit [before they are approved]. No platform that doesn't work to the
Unisys standard gets through -- no matter how fast the manufacturing
cycle."

UNISYS: PCS & SERVERS ...WORLDWIDE

What will it take for IT managers to successfully put PCs to work in
mission-critical, client/server applications? The simple answer is that it
will take a great deal more than hot hardware.

The Unisys product family stands up to the most demanding competitive
analysis. In addition, Unisys enhances competitive products with value,
and backs them with an expertise in information management that stretches
around the globe. Today, worldwide, Unisys has more than 60,000 satisfied
customers including 23 of the 25 largest banks, 35 of the largest
telephone companies, 1600 government agencies and 140 airlines.

Unmatched service, a seasoned support organization, systems integration
capabilities and information management expertise to get customers
"on-line" quickly and cost-effectively are, by Unisys definition, a total
solution. And, no company can help customers successfully navigate the
transition to the complex client/server architectures of the future
without it. All these factors (and more) give Unisys a decided advantage
over typical PC vendors.

Still, there is a tendency to view PCs as commodities. In other words, "a
box is a box is a box.". Unisys counters that perception with many
solutions few other companies offer:

The small-footprint Aquanta SC desktop system, which is ideal for
such applications as bank teller stations and airline reservation
counters continues to be the only one on the market bringing
   Pentium power to small places.

Unisys double-wide tower QS servers are one of the very few
available with 13 front accessible drive bays and up to 7 cooling
fans to overcome heat, the key source of server failure.

Unisys QR and DR rackmount servers are among the very few designed
as rackmounts, not rack shelves filled with floor-mount servers.

Hotlines, a presence in 114 countries, Build-To-Customer-Order products,
Total Quality Process control, and a DOA rate far below the industry
average are all reasons why, when specifying a PC system, the name Unisys
makes a difference.
