StarQuest Debuts StarSQL Pro

New data access driver sports static SQL generator, performance
enhancements, restructured pricing, and new TCP/IP capabilities

BERKELEY, CALIF., MAY 7, 1996 -- StarQuest Software, Inc., today announced
StarSQL Pro, a new version of the company's flagship StarSQL ODBC (Open
Database Connectivity) driver for access to remote IBM databases from
ODBC-enabled PC or UNIX applications. StarSQL Pro features StarScribe, a
powerful Static SQL generator; support for Static SQL and stored
procedures; StarPipes, StarQuest's new TCP/IP-to-SNA gateway software; and
free sample code for quick application development. In addition, StarSQL
is now available in new standalone workstation- and server-based pricing.

StarScribe enables database administrators to create Static SQL
automatically with point-and-click ease. Off-the-shelf query tools allow
users to record queries quickly, edit them, and transfer them to host
database systems as Static SQL packages.

StarSQL Pro also includes support for StarPipes, the company's new
TCP/IP-to-SNA gateway software. StarPipes allows ODBC-enabled applications
using StarSQL Pro to communicate with remote IBM DB2 mainframes, midrange,
and UNIX systems using TCP/IP as the network transport protocol. This will
be especially attractive to large corporate organizations that are
increasingly favoring TCP/IP as the enterprise connectivity protocol.

Additionally, StarSQL Pro features support for stored procedures and Static
SQL, enabling developers to execute high-volume applications, such as data
entry, on-line transaction processing (OLTP), or database reporting
quickly and conveniently. The product accesses any DB2 for which a user
has authorization to read or write.

StarSQL Pro has excellent scalability and performance as a standalone
workstation driver and can also be used in a server or web server
configuration.

MORE ABOUT STARSQL

PRO StarSQL Pro is a software driver that enables any ODBC-compliant
Windows-based program to access data directly from remote IBM midrange,
mainframe, and UNIX systems, which currently store more than 70 percent of
corporate databases. Leveraging IBM's DRDA technology to request host
data, StarSQL Pro requires no special software or maintenance on the host
system. Data access is faster and more general than with emulation or
screen scraping.

The software allows users to bring record-by-record information from IBM
DB2 databases into PC- or UNIX-based applications without having to leave
their application. At the same time, it allows programmers to develop
transparent client/server applications for DB2 data using tools such as
Visual Basic or Lotus Notes.

StarSQL Pro provides Microsoft's ODBC I.C on the client PC. This means that
any ODBC-enabled application -- there are currently more than 100 -- can
use StarSQL Pro to access relational databases on remote IBM servers.
StarSQL Pro supports ODBC-enabled applications running on Windows NT,
Windows 95, Windows 3.X, OS/2, and UNIX.

On the host side, StarSQL Pro uses standard IBM protocols such as DRDA and
APPC as the basis of data access and transport. As a result, the driver
requires no special software in the IBM host system, and is cost-effective
and current. By contrast, other connectivity products use "proxy" software
on the host systems in order to access databases and to communicate to the
requester. That approach causes support problems and high costs, as
vendors must constantly retain compatibility with the latest releases of
hardware and software from IBM.

NEW PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

StarSQL Pro is available immediately and will be priced at $229 per
stand-alone client, $2,995 for StarSQL Pro Server, providing 1 to 4
connections, and $12,500 for StarSQL Pro 100 user license pack. Volume
discounts are available; prices are in U.S. dollars. A StarSQL Pro product
demo can be found on the World Wide Web at
http://www.starquest.com/products/ starsqlpro.html. StarPipes, also
available immediately, lists for $2,500.
