Stac Replica 2.1 Software Offers 7/24 Live Server Replication

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR COMPAQ SERVERS AND NOVELL'S NETWARE WEB SERVER ALSO
INCLUDED PROVIDING SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS TO SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS

SAN DIEGO, Calif., May 13, 1996 - Stac, Inc. (NASDAQ:STAC) today announced
a new version of its award-winning Replica backup replacement and disaster
recovery software that will significantly help system administrators
deliver uninterrupted service to end users across the enterprise 7
days/week, 24 hours/day.

Replica 2.1 for Novell NetWare gives system administrators the ability to
replicate file servers at any time during the day while at the same time
providing users with full read/write capability thus causing no
interruption to their daily routine.

In addition to the 7/24 live server replication, the new version of Replica
2.1 includes the following new features; enhanced auto-loader support,
providing fast, easy administration directly from Replica's Windows user
interface; added support for Compaq Computer Corporation's SmartStart
partitions; robust integration of Novell Directory Services (NDS), for
secure authentication and multiple directory tree logins for the
administrator; and new server replication support for Novell's NetWare Web
Server.

"With Replica 2.1, system administrators will now not only reap the
benefits of a proven high-speed replication and disaster recovery product,
but will utilize the tools necessary to perform file system replication at
any time during the day with no downtime to the system," said Michael W.
Harris, director of Stac's Storage Management Group. "Unlike any other
product on the market today, Replica 2.1 enables the server to have full
read/write activity during replication without requiring pre-grouping or
making temporary copies of the files."

Replica software allows network and storage managers to replicate entire
NetWare servers or individual NetWare volumes to available storage space
on the same server, to standby servers or to streaming tape drives. Unlike
traditional backup technologies, the replicated information can be mounted
directly as a NetWare volume to provide immediate end user access and free
NetWare administrators from performing time-consuming and error-prone
restore operations.

Replica's innovative technology has already helped it win a number of major
awards in 1996. They include LAN Magazine's 1996 "Backup Product of the
Year," Data Communications' 1996 "Hot Product of the Year;" and PC Week's
"Analyst's Choice" award. Additionally, Replica 2.0 recently won PC Week's
first annual "Corporate Information Technology Excellence Award" for
backup. The honor recognized companies that developed products considered
to be the best overall for solving complex business problems of large
corporations.

"We chose products that solved the real-world problems of network
administrators," said David Berlind, director of PC Week Labs. "Replica
presents a unique way of not only backing up a network, but an easy,
hassle-free way to recover from a server crash. With its new capability to
keep the server fully read/write active during replication, the end user
performance increases and waiting time is diminished."

"Companies using the NetWare Web Server need it to be up and running
24-hours-a-day," said Mark Griffiths, director of marketing of Novell's
Internet Commerce Division. "Stac's 7/24 live server replication feature
gives users a fast way to replicate the NetWare Web Server without causing
delays or downtime for the end user or customer."

"The ability to replicate live open files and to grant full read/write
access to the end users during replication is something customers have
needed for some time," said Bob Harbison, president of Network Integration
Consultants. "Companies today can not afford one minute of downtime nor
can they lack the capability to immediately replicate files
seamlessly-including open ones. Replica's implementation of its new 7/24
live server replication allows the user to continue with normal operations
during a replication period without losing any data or having to wait
while the server catches up."

REPLICA 2.1 FEATURES AND BENEFITS

7/24 live server replication: a new implementation of replicating
active file systems without disabling user logins or file updates.
This allows network administrators to quickly, reliably and
consistently protect their vital server data with absolutely no
interruption to the end user; or waiting time for open files to
 replicate.

Support for Novell's NetWare Web server: support for Novell's
NetWare Web Server provides fast, complete data protection while
the server is up and running 7 days/week, 24 hours/day.

Added support for Compaq SmartStart partitions: the ability to
quickly and completely recover a crashed server from a Replica
disk or tape without manually rebuilding disk partitions or
separately reinstalling the network operating system. Replica adds
automatic support for the Compaq's SmartStart partitions.

Enhanced auto-loader support: simple administration and management
directly from Replica's Windows user interface; continued support
of DLT tape drives and other high-speed devices and autoloaders
including Digital's StorageWorks tape subsystems. (Available in
 Replica's High-Performance option.)

NDS Integration: improved NDS handling and additional support for
 multiple directory tree logins.
