SPECTRA LOGIC RELEASES NEW USER INTERFACE FOR SPECTRA LOGIC TAPE
LIBRARIES.

NO-COST UPGRADE ADDS IMPROVED TAPE MANAGEMENT FEATURES, REAL TIME TAPE
DRIVE MONITORING AND REDUCES USER ERRORS DURING BACKUPS.

BOULDER, COLORADO MAY 13, 1996 -- Spectra Logic, an award winning
manufacturer of 4mm and 8mm robotic tape libraries, announced the release
of a new Shell for its popular 4mm and 8mm tape libraries. The new 03.01
Shell firmware defines the functionality and capabilities of the Spectra
Libraries' unique touch-screen graphical user interface (GUI), much like
an operating system does for computer hardware.

Spectra Logic's new GUI allows users improved access to important status
information, configuration parameters and diagnostics for media, robotics
and tape drives which are installed in the library. The 03.01 Shell has
added many new features which exploit the libraries' graphical user
interface. The 03.01 upgrade is free for customers currently under
warranty or a support agreement and is easily installed through the front
panel using a 4mm or 8mm Code Tape.

The 03.01 Shell upgrade includes many enhancements and features unique to
Spectra Logic's tape libraries. Spectra Logic has long been an industry
leader in backup automation for corporate data management. The list below
contains several examples of information which is now available at the
user's fingertips through the touch screen GUI:

Display of real-time tape drive Error Correction Code (ECC) Error
Rates. ECC Error Rates provide critical insight into a tape drive's
operational characteristics. Monitoring ECC error rates facilitates
proactive drive maintenance and helps ensure data integrity.

Audible and visual "Alert" and "Fault" notifications
warn users of potential problems before data integrity is sacrificed.

Abnormal ECC Error Rates, excessive tape load counts, and drive
cleaning notification are examples of typical Alert or Fault problems.

Newly added media tracking functionality allows users to track
and identify media related problems. Identifying defective media
is also paramount to preventing data loss. The 03.01 Shell allows
users to view information such as how many times a tape has been
loaded, its bar-code label, and important statistics from the
last drive to access the tape.

An ability to report failed cleaning operations allows users to
initiate corrective actions before a drive is permanently damaged.
Users are warned of empty cleaning cartridges and a drive which
 may need additional cleaning.

Also added were several new robotic retry algorithms. The Spectra
4000/9000 design has implemented special "adaptive load algorithms"
which allow the intelligent robotic controller to accommodate
many different tape drives. These algorithms also allow extensive
retry capabilities which prevent jams by allowing the robot to
adapt to physical differences in tapes and drives without needing
 any physical alignment.

The Spectra 4000 is a 4mm library family capable of storing 20, 40 or 60
DDS-2 DAT tapes. Total storage capacities are 200, 400, and 600 Gigabytes
respectively (assuming 2.5:1 compression ratios). The Spectra 4000 can
also accommodate from 1 to 4 tape drives from popular 4mm DAT drive
vendors such as Hewlett Packard, Sony, WangDAT and Conner. List prices
begin at $9,175(US) for a 20 slot unit with one Hewlett Packard HP C1533A
tape drive.

Similar to the Spectra 4000, the Spectra 9000 design can accommodate from 1
to 4 helical-scan 8mm tape drives and either 20 or 40 tapes. This gives
the Spectra 9000 a total storage capacity of 280 or 560 Gigabytes
(assuming a data compression ratio of 2:1). List prices start at
$11,990(US) for a 20 slot unit with one Exabyte EXB-8505XL tape drive.

Both the Spectra 4000 and Spectra 9000 offer numerous configuration
options. Users can specify a tabletop, vertical tower, or Rackmount
configuration. Additionally, there are three options for robotic control:
single-ended SCSI-2, differential SCSI-2, or Spectra Logic's Serial to
SCSI Communication Language (SSCL TM).

The Spectra 4000 (DDS-2) and Spectra 9000 (8mm) were both developed to be
upgraded in the field through both firmware upgrades and modular Field
Replaceable Units (FRUs). Additional drives, barcode capability, larger
tape capacity carousels -- and new Shell firmware -- can be added,
allowing users to scale the capacity, throughput and functionality of
their Spectra Logic libraries. The libraries were designed to easily be
upgraded with more slots or drives in the field allowing users protection
of their hardware investment. Both feature the LCD touch-screen user
interface and an optional barcode reader.

Spectra Logic has manufactured high-end data storage products since 1979
making them a premier provider of tape library hardware and UNIX librarian
software. Spectra Logic tape libraries are now supported by more than 30
software packages on more than five major operating systems; including,
UNIX, Novell, NT, and Macintosh (such as Cheyenne, Seagate Software,
Legato, etc.). For more information about libraries, contact Spectra

SPECTRA LOGIC ANNOUNCES INTERFACE WITH SQL BACKTRACK TO OFFER ON-LINE
BACKUPS OF SYBASE

BOULDER, CO - - MAY 6, 1996 - - Spectra Logic, the innovative technology
leader for advanced library/librarian products, has integrated its
Alexandria Backup and Archive Librarian product with DataTools' SQL
BackTrack to offer "hot" or "on-line" backups of Sybase System 10 and
System 11 databases. This method combines Alexandria's comprehensive
scheduling and media management capabilities with DataTools' popular
backup and recovery product.

The interface was designed using DataTools' Open Backup Streams Interface
(OBSI) Developer's Toolkit. This toolkit is an Application Programming
Interface to facilitate integrating enterprise backup automation products
with the database-aware drivers and capabilities offered by
SQL-BackTrack.

The driver, now called SLDT (Spectra Logic/DataTools), is linked into the
DataTools backup pool to allow the SQL BackTrack backup server in Sybase
to call SLDT. SLDT then launches Alexandria which feeds the information
supplied by BackTrack to the tape. When a restore is requested from
BackTrack, SLDT launches a restore to retrieve the information and feed it
back into the database via BackTrack.

The advantages to using this method for backing up Sybase include:

Support for Sybase System 10 and System 11 servers
 Object-level recovery
 Incremental backups
 Data Compression
 Logical format backups.

"Spectra Logic is very pleased to have completed the SLDT driver and to
continue working with DataTools to offer Sybase customers hot backup using
the extensibility of Alexandria and the flexibility of SQL Backtrack,"
said Nathan C. Thompson, Chairman of Spectra Logic.

Certification is currently in progress for the Alexandria/DataTools
interface product on AT&T NCR, Sun, and Hewlett-Packard platforms, with
additional platforms soon to follow.
