SPA says benefits will be long-term, significant

(WASHINGTON, D.C., May 29, 1996) -- The leading trade association for the
software industry today announced its support for President Clinton's
"21st Century Teacher" initiative.

Today the president announced a new initiative to bring tens of thousands
of teachers into the information age of the 21st century. Speaking at a
White House ceremony in which President Clinton provided details of the
initiative, the president of the Software Publishers Association (SPA),
Ken Wasch, said the initiative represented a bold move by the Clinton
Administration to ensure teachers across the United States have the
technological skills to help students prepare for the workforce of the
next century.

"Technologically literate people are a vital national resource, and the
United States benefits from increasing high-skill, high-wage jobs. We
depend on the effectiveness of technology to educate and train the next
genation of American workers," Wasch said.

"Well-trained teachers are the conduit through which our students will
become technologically literate and help the United States retain our
worldwide competitive advantage."

SPA is the leading trade association of the desktop software industry,
representing the leading publishers as well as many start-up firms in the
