The OpenUTM transaction monitor from Siemens Nixdorf: Now also available in
the USA, as well as under Windows NT

May 10, 1996

PADERBORN/MUNICH. SIEMENS NIXDORF IS NOW OFFERING ITS UNIVERSAL TRANSACTION
MONITOR OPENUTM IN THE USA TOO, AND UNDER THE WINDOWS NT OPERATING SYSTEM.
OPENUTM ENABLES THE INTEGRATION OF HETEROGENEOUS NETWORKS, DATABASES AND
PLATFORMS IN NON-PROPRIETARY CLIENT-SERVER ENVIRONMENTS. THE UNIVERSAL
TRANSACTION MONITOR GUARANTEES SECURITY AND HIGH PERFORMANCE FOR
INDEPENDENT MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS EXECUTED IN PARALLEL, ENABLING MILLIONS
OF TRANSACTIONS INVOLVING THOUSANDS OF USERS TO BE HANDLED EACH DAY.
THROUGH SUPPORTING THE WINDOWS NT OPERATING SYSTEM, SIEMENS NIXDORF IS
SETTING UP A LINK FOR THE USE OF MICROSOFT TECHNOLOGIES ON OPENUTM
SERVERS. IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THIS PRODUCT IN THE NORTH AMERICAN
MARKETPLACE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, SIEMENS NIXDORF HAS SET UP A
COMPETENCE CENTER IN SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.

With OpenUTM, Siemens Nixdorf is offering, for a whole series of different
platforms, a transaction monitor that many well-known IT analysts believe
occupies a leading position in the world market. According to a study of
Unix transaction monitors carried out by the Gartner Group ("System and
Server Evaluation", 1994/1995), OpenUTM's functionality tops that of rival
products appearing on the scene. Its X/Open interfaces offer exceptional
openness, whilst its outstanding mainframe interoperability features
guarantee investment protection. The product's universal restart
technology is unsurpassed. Further highlights include integration with
Microsoft products via OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), an
object-oriented interface, World Wide Web integration, new system and
application management functions, and a sophisticated "Message Queueing"
functionality, providing the foundation for mobile computing or workflow
management.

According to IDC ("The transaction Processing Market for Western Europe",
May 1995), OpenUTM is the most widely-used Unix transaction monitor in
Europe, with a global market-share exceeded only by that of Tuxedo. More
than 5500 installations are currently in operation, with banks, insurance
houses, travel agents, retail traders, the pharmaceutical sector and local
authorities. In addition, the success of this product is evidenced by an
impressive list of international reference installations.

OpenUTM runs on open Unix servers from leading vendors like Bull,
Hewlett-Packard, IBM, ICL, Pyramid, Siemens Nixdorf and Sun. It can also
run on PC servers under Unix (Unix SCO, Unixware), as well as BS2000/OSD
mainframe machines from Siemens Nixdorf. Now, OpenUTM also supports the
Windows NT server operating system. The NT server will offer identical
functionality to that provided on Unix and BS2000/OSD systems, so that
from now on, this transaction monitor will represent a universal concept.
With support for a further operating system, OLE and DDE (Dynamic Data
Exchange) mechanisms from the NT world can now be used on the OpenUTM
servers too.

Siemens Nixdorf is now offering OpenUTM in the USA as an independent
software solution. Recently, Pyramid - a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Siemens Nixdorf - has likewise incorporated OpenUTM into its product
portfolio, thus augmenting Pyramid's server offering by the addition of an
important middleware component. OpenUTM is integrated into the transaction
solutions, which are known as "Smart Transactions".

In order to be able to tackle the US market immediately with OpenUTM,
Siemens Nixdorf has already set up a Competence Center in San
Jose/California. The Center is intended to support systems integrators,
ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) and system vendors in the USA. This is
part of Siemens Nixdorf's plan to expand its indirect sales channels still
further.
