Sequent's New Internet Accelerator Raises Performance Bar For High-End
Internet Server Platforms

Already clocked at 7,200 WebStones and 5,000 simultaneous connections, the
system can act as a web server, FTP server, messaging server, database
server and news server.

BEAVERTON, ORE. -- APRIL 29, 1996 -- Pole-vaulting over competitive
offerings, Sequent Computer Systems, Inc., today introduced the world's
fastest, most scalable Internet server platform -- the Internet
Accelerator.

Built to deliver exceptional performance and throughput and to allow for
planned growth, the Internet Accelerator is targeted at value-added
network providers, telephone companies, cable companies, content providers
and other companies that require a high-performance, growth-oriented
Web-based infrastructure.

The Internet Accelerator is a Sequent Symmetry 5000 system that can scale
from two to 30 166 MHz Intel Pentium processors and can be configured
with up to 3.5 gigabytes of main memory and up to 3.5 terabytes of disk
storage. The system runs Sequent's DYNIX/ptx (UNIX) operating system and
comes with a modular suite of software especially tuned for running web
servers, FTP servers, messaging servers, news servers and database
servers.

To meet the needs of large service providers, Sequent's Internet
Accelerator can respond to up to 2,000 separate IP addresses from a single
system. This capability is often sought by large corporations and Internet
service providers who want to support multiple web sites on a single
platform for reasons of cost-savings and manageability. It also makes it
easier for organizations to offer the "vanity URLs" that give small
businesses the appearance of having their own web servers.

The Internet Accelerator also comes with optimized FTP software customized
to scale on the Accelerator's symmetric multiprocessing architecture. The
enhanced FTP software delivers unprecedented levels of performance in live
production environments, allowing providers to handle more simultaneous
file transfers, and faster, than with any other system. In addition,
Sequent has increased the session startup throughput, allowing users to be
serviced at least 10 times faster, something that no other computer system
manufacturer has been able to do. This unique achievement is based in part
on the parallel communications capabilities inherent in Sequent's
DYNIX/ptx operating system.

In December, 1995, the Symmetry 5000 server set new industry records for
performance and number of simultaneous connections. In benchmark tests
running Open Market, Inc.'s WebServer software, the Sequent server
delivered 7,200 WebStones, three times the previous high-water mark of
2,400 WebStones. The server also achieved a 500 percent increase over the
previous record for the number of simultaneous connections, with 5,000
simultaneous 14.4Kb modem connections.

The Symmetry 5000 also set the record in May 1995 for the highest publicly
recorded performance of an open X.400 message transfer system. The Sequent
system, running ISOCOR's Scalable ISOPLEX server, produced a sustained
message transfer rate of 743 message pairs per second, and has since
boosted its performance to a sustained message transfer rate of 1,025
message pairs per second.

"The unprecedented rate of change in the Internet industry means that
service providers face incredible levels of uncertainty...uncertainty in
business model, market behavior and technology requirements," said Jeff
Feinstein, vice president and general manager of Sequent's American
Operations. "In such a high-risk, high-stakes marketplace, one of the best
ways for companies to hedge their bets is to choose proven technology with
built-in flexibility and scalability. With its record-breaking performance
and scalable architecture, and Sequent's strong record of success in
solution-oriented technology deployment, the Internet Accelerator is an
ideal choice for large-scale Internet service and content providers."

Sequent Computer Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SQNT), is a leading architect and
provider of open client/server solutions for enterprise business
computing. With an installed base of nearly 8,000 systems, Sequent leads
all other vendors of high end UNIX systems supporting very large-scale
