SCO FIRST TO DELIVER REMOTE OLE AUTOMATION TO ALL MAJOR UNIX SERVERS

Developers Can Now Integrate UNIX Business Applications with Windows PCs
Across Client/Server Networks

SANTA CRUZ, CA (MAY 23, 1996)-- SCO (NASDAQ: SCOC), the world's leading
provider of UNIX server and host systems, and a leading provider of
Windows integration software, today announced that it is the first vendor
to provide developers with Remote OLE (Object Linking and Embedding)
technology for integrating UNIX applications with Windows client PCs. The
SCO Server OLE technology is now available on the Web for evaluation by
developers. It's available for SunOS 4.1.2, Solaris 2.1 (SPARC), HP-UX
9.01, IBM AIX 3.2.5, DEC Alpha OSF/1 3.0, SCO OpenServer Release 5.0, SCO
Open Desktop 3.0, and SCO UnixWare 2.01.

"Once again, SCO is ensuring that UNIX Systems are the best servers for
Windows client PCs," said Ray Anderson, senior vice president and managing
director of SCO's client integration division. "Everybody expected
Microsoft's 'network' OLE which includes remote OLE automation in Windows
NT 4.0. SCO provides this remote OLE automation technology today. UNIX
developers need not wait any longer. With the SCO Server OLE technology,
developers can create full object-oriented client/server applications that
fully integrate Windows client PCs with all major UNIX servers. Users will
then be able to easily integrate business-critical UNIX applications
running on the server with productivity applications running on their
Windows PCs."

Taking Advantage of the Network

Microsoft's OLE technology is widely accepted as a powerful way of
embedding objects and enabling applications to communicate with each
other. But in today's distributed environments, OLE automation must
operate across enterprise networks. Visual Basic 4.0 Enterprise Edition
addresses remote automation, but is restricted to the 32-bit Windows
world. Up until now, UNIX system developers had no way to integrate their
applications with Windows OLE technology over the network.

Micro Focus, the leading vendor of COBOL Programming and Productivity tools
has already announced support for SCO Server OLE technology to help
developers in the creation of Client-Server applications. Micro Focus
Visual Object COBOL on client systems and Micro Focus Object COBOL on
server systems will support the new SCO technology.

"SCO Server OLE will provide COBOL developers with easy client-server
distribution of the logic of their business applications", said Howard
Greenwell, Asst. Vice President of Strategic Business Development at Micro
Focus. "This innovative technology will allow application developers to
access COBOL application code on both client and server systems."

Ensuring Future OLE Compatibility

With SCO Server OLE, developers can move their UNIX applications to a
multi-tier, client/server model. SCO Server OLE technology enables an OLE
controller such as Visual Basic or Excel on a Windows PC to drive a
process running on the UNIX server, so developers can distribute
application functionality across both the client and the server in a
networked environment. SCO Server OLE complies with Microsoft OLE APIs,
ensuring compatibility with future versions of OLE. It is Microsoft
ActiveX ready allowing OLE enabled applications to access services over
the Internet.

SCO Server OLE technology is ideal for in-house developers, system
integrators, and solution builders who want to give their current UNIX
applications a Windows front end on the client. It also allows Visual
Basic and other Windows RAD tool developers to implement remote OLE
automation with their UNIX applications. Developers can implement remote
OLE automation for UNIX applications written in C, C++, COBOL, and Tcl,
allowing direct calls to internal functions within the UNIX server.

Providing Greater Value to the End User

"Take, for example, a stock broker who wants to quickly provide a client
with a clear, graphical risk analysis of a stock portfolio," said
Anderson. "Using SCO Server OLE technology, a developer can write an
application that enables the stock broker to use a Windows PC to get the
information off of the UNIX server and feed it into an Excel spreadsheet
embedded in a Word document. Once the broker has analyzed the risks in
Excel, he can create a report in Word and fax that report directly to the
customer. The UNIX server provides the quick access to business critical
data, and the Windows PC provides the user-friendly productivity
applications required to make that data presentable to the client.

"To build that application," Anderson said, "the developer writes an
application in Visual Basic that uses the Windows PC as a front end to get
the information off of the UNIX server. The Visual Basic front end acts as
an OLE controller, and by communicating with the SCO Server OLE technology
on the UNIX server, it can initiate processes on the UNIX server and
request various calculations. Calculations that would have taken a half
hour on a Windows PC can be done in just seconds on the multiprocessing
UNIX server. The OLE controller gathers the results and feeds them into an
Excel spreadsheet embedded in the Word document. This kind of report could
be generated automatically every week as a value-added service to the
customer. This is just one example of the advanced client/server
applications that can be developed using SCO Server OLE technology."
