SCO TAKES JAVA TECHNOLOGY BEYOND THE INTERNET

SCO Licenses Java Technology as Strategic Cross-Platform Development
Environment

SANTA CRUZ, CA (APRIL 30, 1996) -- In a move that will enable developers to
utilize the leading Internet development language for general purpose
applications development on the leading UNIX server systems, SCO announced
today a strategic agreement with JavaSoft, a division of Sun Microsystems,
to include the Java technology in SCO's UNIX operating systems.

"We believe that Java is the most important software development technology
to appear in this decade. For the first time, developers have an
environment where they can create applications that run on all major
operating systems3/4instantly! This will significantly enhance our
developers' power to create new business critical applications for the SCO
platform," said Doug Michels, SCO's chief technical officer.

Java Integration with SCO Products

SCO plans to integrate Java technologies with SCO OpenServer and SCO
UnixWare operating systems and development environments. Java development
and run time environments will be available to SCO OpenServer developers
and OEMs later this year. Java will be included as a standard feature in
the forthcoming release of "Gemini," the merger of SCO OpenServer and SCO
UnixWare systems scheduled for 1997.

Developers who use Java to create portable applications will be able to
distribute them on SCO client and server systems, knowing that the run
time environment will be available on every system without the need to
obtain a Java run time license for each application.

SCO Internet Family

This week, SCO also announced the SCO Internet Family, which features SCO
Internet FastStart. SCO Internet FastStart is a fully integrated,
low-cost, easy-to-configure, business critical Internet server solution
that combines key Internet technologies, system monitoring, and backup
capabilities with the proven reliability and performance of SCO OpenServer
Release 5, today's leading UNIX server operating system for Intel
processor-based systems. SCO FastStart includes Java browsers and servers
that enable full support for Java applets.

"SCO has taken Java beyond the Internet," said Jeff Ait, SCO's vice
president, Internet. "With this agreement, Java becomes a general purpose
development environment."

The Java technology is an essential Internet development tool that
dramatically simplifies the ability to develop, test and deploy fully
Internet-enabled, business-critical applications. With Java technology,
businesses can readily meet the challenges of programming for the next
decade, while providing portability, security, advanced networking and
reliability without compromising performance.
