QUALSTAR LAUNCHES 4-MM TAPE LIBRARY FAMILY WITH CAPACITIES OF UP TO 1.2
TERABYTES

Canoga Park, CA, May 1996 - Qualstar Corporation introduces the first
automated tape library, for 4-mm DAT technology, that fully meets the
needs for enterprise-wide network backup, high-capacity near-on-line
storage and data archive applications. The TLS-2000 Series comes in six
models, with storage capacities ranging from 72 gigabytes to 1.2
terabytes. These models use the 4-mm DDS-2 DAT cartridge tape drives. The
introduction of DDS-3 drives in the second half of 1996 will boost
capacity to well over 3 terabytes.

Single Tape Format For Desktop, Server And Enterprise

"Many organizations have storage needs that go beyond the capacities of
today's single-drive autoloaders," says Bob Covey, vice president of
marketing at Qualstar. "With an automated tape library, these same users
can store, archive and retrieve massive amounts of data, without operator
intervention, while using the same tape format throughout the enterprise.
Through the concurrent use of several drives within the library,
throughput rates are also much faster than with systems that can only
access one drive at a time."

According to Covey, VARs and system integrators will play a key role in
helping users make the transition to tape library storage for a variety of
applications, ranging from image archiving to enterprise-wide network
backup and data warehousing. "Tape libraries are now an integral part of
many organizations' storage management solutions and users need hands-on
reseller support to integrate library-based applications," he notes.

Support For Hewlett-Packard, Sony And Conner DAT Drives

The TLS-2000 Series Tape Library System is available in six models, with
the 2218, 2218A and 2236 supporting two DAT drives and the 2436, 2472 and
24144 supporting up to four DAT drives. Qualstar also offers field
expansion kits that double the storage capacity of some models.

Qualstar 4-mm tape libraries are designed to use unmodified DAT tape drives
from Hewlett-Packard, Sony and Conner. Its advanced design reduces initial
cost and simplifies installation by eliminating all electrical and
mechanical adjustments, making the units self-aligning. Upgrading to DDS-3
drives is readily accomplished in the field.

Advanced Features Carry Over From The TLS-4000 Series

The TLS-2000 Series libraries incorporate the same advanced features
introduced by the TLS-4000 family of libraries. All models have I/O Ports
to remove or insert individual tape cartridges without opening the front
door. This feature gives the application control over the data and
enhanced physical security for the media itself. A mobile barcode scanner
performs a complete cartridge inventory in under 100 seconds. Qualstar's
unique Inventory Sentry and patented tape wear reduction systems are also
incorporated.

All models feature a key-locked access door with large window and a front
panel menu system for system configuration, operation and diagnostics.
Dual power supplies and a filtered positive air pressure system enhance
reliability.

Reliability Is A Key Design Criterion

Qualstar replaced the belts and pulleys commonly used in other designs with
brussless-DC motors and high-precision lead screws. Digital closed-loop
motion control systems and optical position sensors assure fast,
trouble-free cartridge handling.

The Qualstar TLS-2000 carries a 2-year warranty, reflecting its design
integrity and advanced construction techniques.

Qualstar is a leading manufacturer of automated cartridge tape libraries
and other tape storage products. Qualstar's tape storage products are sold
worldwide to OEM manufacturers, system integrators and resellers for
incorporation into networks, minicomputers, workstations and personal
computers. Founded in 1984, the company continues to be a leading
manufacturer of 9-track tape drives for the desktop and workstation
market. All Qualstar products are designed and manufactured in the USA.
