Portable Graphics First to Ship Open Inventor 2.1.1 for Windows NT and
Windows 95

3D Developers Toolkit Features 28 MFC Extension Classes, OLE Support, and
IV-Wizard for a Complete Windows `Look-and-Feel

AUSTIN, TX, May 14, 1996 -- Portable Graphics, Inc., a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Evans & Sutherland Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: ESCC),
today announced that it is now shipping Open Inventor 2.1.1 for Windows NT
and Windows 95.

Developed by Silicon Graphics, Inc., and licensed to Portable Graphics,
Open Inventor is an object-oriented toolkit for developing software based
on the OpenGL application programming interface (API). Portable Graphics
implementation of the Open Inventor 3D developers toolkit for Windows
retains the function and features of the UNIX version, while providing a
traditional Windows programming environment. This makes it possible for
Windows programmers to develop high-performance, interactive 3D graphics
applications that have a true Windows ``look and feel.

Portable Graphics optimized and extended Open Inventor 2.1.1 for the
Windows NT/Windows 95 developer in several ways:

SoMFC Library: This library serves as a bridge between the Microsoft
Foundation Class (MFC) library and the Open Inventor libraries. Using the
SoMFC Library, programmers can develop Open Inventor applications within
the familiar Windows environment. The librarys 28 MFC extension classes
save development time by supplying pre-constructed applications that allow
developers to add typical Windows capabilities to their Inventor
applications. These include clipboard and print support; dialog-based
Inventor windows; light, material, and color editors; examiner, fly, walk
or plane viewers; and much more.

OLE 2.0 Support: Three MFC OLE classes have been extended to allow
developers to create an OLE 2.0 full server. This allows end users to
embed and edit Open Inventor 3D models inside any application that
supports OLE 2.0. For example, by linking an Inventor file to a Microsoft
Excel spreadsheet, you can position and manipulate a 3D model in your
spreadsheet with Open Inventor editors and tools. You can also select Open
Inventor models and perform OLE drag and drop, and copy and paste
functions.

WinSoXt Library: This library allows developers to write Inventor
applications without window-system dependencies. WinSoXt is compatible
with the Inventor Xt library which makes it easier to port Open Inventor
applications developed on Windows to Digital, HP, IBM and Sun
workstations.

Component Library: This library provides pre-built interface nodes that can
be plugged in for instantaneous features, such as a color editor box. It
saves development time and creates a uniform appearance.

IV-Wizard: Open Inventor for Windows NT is tightly integrated with the
Microsoft Visual C++ Build environment. For rapid application development
and prototyping, Open Inventor features the IV-Wizard program, an
application creation template based on the AppWizard tool in Microsoft
Visual C++. IV-Wizard includes context sensitive help in Visual C++ for
the Open Inventor libraries.

More About Open Inventor

Open Inventor is rapidly emerging as the de facto standard in 3D graphics
development tools for both commercial and internal application development
on workstations and PCs. Open Inventor supports Windows NT on Intel and
Alpha systems, and Windows 95 on Intel systems.

Open Inventor 2.1.1, the newest release of the Open Inventor product from
Silicon Graphics, features code optimizations that increase the
performance of applications developed with Open Inventor and allow for the
more efficient use of memory. New enhancements include a node for locate
highlighting, an `all-in-one manipulator, and three nodes that support the
Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). VRML, a subset of the Open
Inventor file format, is the industry- standard, platform-independent file
format for 3D graphics on the Internet.

Open Inventor licenses are sold directly from Portable Graphics, or from
Authorized Portable Graphics Distributors in Europe and the Pacific Rim.
Priced at US $995, development licenses include a 90- day limited
warranty, and 12-months of free technical support and software updates.
Run-time licenses start at US $50. Volume and educational discounts are
available.
