PLWEB TURBO SPEEDS INTRANETWORK SITE DEVELOPMENT AND EASE OF USE

MAY 1, 1996, ROCKVILLE, MD--PLWeb Turbo is the newest web-site search tool
from Personal Library Software Inc. (PLS). It is designed to deliver
faster site development and faster searches through large volumes of data,
whether on the World Wide Web or on the corporate intranets that are just
around the corner. Turbo is the latest member of a family of PLS products
that today form the backbone of large on-line services around the world.
The inaugural Turbo release, designed around the Microsoft NT platform, is
expected to have a similar impact on development of networks for the
corporate community.

Site developers with extremely large databases will be especially attracted
to PLWeb Turbo's speed and ease of use. "There's no coding involved,"
explains Adrienne Griffith, product manager at PLS. "Developers can take
their ideas for innovative and appealing access to information and bring
them to life quickly and reliably." Form-based HTML interfaces developed
with PLWeb Turbo are easily integrated into existing WWW pages and are
accessible through any available Web browser and most major commercial
HTTP servers.

Large databases play to the engine's strength: scalability. Honed over the
13 years of the company's existence, the turbo search engine can easily
manage multiple gigabytes of information. Developers never have to scale
their information down to fit the application design; they can scale the
design all the way up to as much information as they want. "If you're
publishing a web site and adding megabytes or even gigabytes of data a
day, we can grow with you," says Griffith. PLWeb Turbo also permits
simultaneous database searching and updating so the site remains
accessible regardless of how often it's updated.

For web-site visitors, PLWeb Turbo solves the problem of accessing and
navigating through large databases. The interface's ability to handle
natural-language searches as well as conventional Boolean-operator
searches lets users ask for information in the way they're most
comfortable. A dynamic concept-searching option helps users by generating
a list of alternative query words based on usage patterns of words found
in the database. According to Griffith, "PLWeb Turbo was designed to get
the maximum performance out of the industry-leading PLS search engine that
resides at its core. It opens new possibilities for Web users, giving
access to information that would be too ponderous to explore with
conventional HTML and slower or less powerful search engines."

Once a search is completed, PLWeb Turbo presents the user with a list of
hypertext links to "hit" documents--listed in the order of probable
greatest importance to the user. Relevance ranking saves users from wading
through long series of useless data. The relevance-ranking algorithm uses
a number of criteria including number of hits, locations of hits in a
document, and presence of rarely found search terms in the document.
Publishers and other large-database providers will find that PLWeb Turbo
improves user satisfaction and increases the number of visitors to their
sites.

Users can couple Turbo with PLS's Personal Agent software to boost
satisfaction even further. Based on a profile a user's interests and
needs, the software leverages Turbo's powerful search capabilities in the
proactive discovery of useful, timely information from mountains of data.
Together, they form a powerful information recovery system--which is what
PLS is all about.

PLS's technology is at the core of products and services from leading
information companies including America Online, the Associated Press,
AT&T, Congressional Quarterly, Data Times, Dow Jones, GNN, Grolier,
Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Illustra, Knight-Ridder, MecklerMedia, Open Market,
Prodigy, the Washington Post, and USA Today.
