ON Technology Expands Network Auditing Software

CAMBRIDGE, MASS., MAY 7, 1996 -- ON Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: ONTC)
today announced general availability of a new version of AuditTrack, a
software package for Novell NetWare LANs that provides unparalleled
security, troubleshooting and usage reporting.

The new version, AuditTrack 3.0, adds native support for auditing NetWare
Directory Services events as well as monitoring file and directory
attribute events. These new features allow NetWare administrators to
monitor server activity with equivalent functionality that has been
available with mainframe and minicomputer operating systems for many
years.

Similar to a security camera in a bank lobby, AuditTrack records the
"events" on NetWare network servers and can be easily "trained" to record
who's looking at confidential information, who's logging in at night,
who's deleting important files, who's changing security levels, or who's
playing games on the server. With its Windows interface and multiple
options for producing graphical reports of selected data, AuditTrack also
can provide useful troubleshooting and usage information.

AuditTrack 3.0 is ideally suited for organizations across all industrial
and governmental sectors. For regulated institutions, such as banks and
brokerage firms, network auditing can be a critical component for
demonstrating that proper security controls are in place. For government
agencies or professional organizations such as law firms, regular reports
that show information is secure from improper deletion or modification can
be important elements of a network security policy.

Combined with pre-existing functionality for auditing remote access,
server, directory, file and print queue events, AuditTrack 3.0 provides a
record of who's accessing the network and its resources that is more
comprehensive than the capability embedded in the operating system itself.
Information captured by AuditTrack can be reported on a case-by-case basis
or at regular intervals, as a detailed report or graph, or as a comma
delimited file for export to a spreadsheet or database application.

WATCHING EVENTS OCCURRING WITH NDS

AuditTrack 3.0 includes new features to monitor the considerable
functionality of NetWare Directory Services (NDS). Designed to monitor the
complete range of NDS events, AuditTrack 3.0 provides a unique view of the
distributed database that NDS creates for NetWare 4.1 servers. Among the
major NDS events that AuditTrack 3.0 monitors are the following:

Change Access Control List: Monitoring the changes to the ACL, the basis of
NetWare security, provides a record of the rights that users, groups and
organizations have to directories and files and can be used to signal and
record a NetWare security compromise or attempted breach.

Add, Move, Rename or Remove Entry: Monitoring the various Entry events
provides a record of how the NDS tree changes and can be used to track if
certain objects, such as users, groups, servers, volumes, printers and
print queues, change and by whom the change was committed.

User Events: Monitoring the frequency of how often NetWare Intruder
Detection locks or unlocks users provides a record that network
administrators can use to establish an appropriate network security policy
for handling failed logins and suspicious workstation activity. A record
of directory service events such as Disable User and Enable User provides
insight to changes with user accounts.

Change Security Events: Monitoring Change Security to Me and Change
Security Equivalence provides invaluable information for backtracking when
users were given certain rights and who gave the right to them, which can
be particularly useful for detecting internal security breaches.

AUDITING ATTRIBUTE EVENTS FOR NETWARE 3.X AND 4.X SERVERS

In addition to auditing NDS events, AuditTrack 3.0 provides the capability
to audit attribute changes for directories and files residing on either
NetWare 3.x or NetWare 4.x servers. Tracking attribute changes can help
the administrator troubleshoot or avoid user complaints concerning changes
to their rights to server-based directories and files. For example,
organizations often create server-based directories so groups can share
files or archive documents. The administrator generally assigns
"attribute" rights to these shared resources, such as Read Only or
Read-Write or Purge. A deliberate or accidental change to an attribute to
Purge from Read Only, for example, would render a file or directory
unrecoverable and could result in significant intellectual property or
productivity loss.
