NETSCAPE ENHANCES NETSCAPE OPEN SOFTWARE PLATFORM FOR JAVA DEVELOPERS

NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND CROSS-PLATFORM SUPPORT GIVE DEVELOPERS EASY ACCESS TO
MILLIONS OF USERS OF JAVA-ENABLED NETSCAPE PRODUCTS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (May 28, 1996) -- Netscape Communications Corporation
(NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that it is extending its Java-enabled open
software platform with new technologies and tools that make it easier for
develepers to create Java- and JavaScript-based applications. The company
announced the Netscape LiveConnect software development kit (SDK), new
platform support and component technologies that enhance the Netscape
client/server platform for building live applications with the Java and
JavaScript development languages.

Netscape plans to release a beta version of its Java-enabled Netscape
Navigator 3.0 client software for the Microsoft Windows 3.1 operating
environment in June, making Netscape the first company to deliver Java-
and JavaScript-enabled software across Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows
3.1, Macintosh and UNIX operating environments. With Java and JavaScript
support incorporated into both its client and server products, Netscape is
the most widely deployed software platform for building and running
Java-based applications, with millions of users worldwide.

"The millions of users of Java- and JavaScript-enabled Netscape Navigators
and Netscape servers provide a ready market for developers wanting to
create live online applications," said Mike Homer, senior vice president
of marketing for Netscape. "Netscape is continuing to enrich its software
platform built on these open Internet standards to make it easier for
developers and users to take advantage of the power of Java and JavaScript
for rich applications and content."

Netscape released to its developers this week a beta version of its
Netscape LiveConnect SDK, a set of tools that enable the creation of a new
level of rich online applications. A new framework available in Netscape
Navigator 3.0, LiveConnect enables the various live objects on a Web page
- including Java applets, JavaScript scripts and Plug-ins - to communicate
and interact. Using the tools in the LiveConnect SDK, developers can link
objects on a page so that they work together as a team, passing data
seamlessly between them.

Netscape also announced that it plans to deliver to its developers
beginning next quarter a prerelease version of Java user interface
components and application programming interfaces acquired through
Netscape's acquisition of Netcode Corporation earlier this year. The
components, written entirely in Java, include a powerful set of Java class
libraries that are cross-platform compatible with Sun Microsystem's
Abstract Windows Toolkit (AWT), making it easier for developers to quickly
create Java applications. The basic component libraries are expected to be
included in future versions of Netscape Navigator, assuring developers of
the broadest possible network platform for deployment of their Java
applets and applications.

"Netscape has been a catalyst for the widespread adoption of Java and
JavaScript by enterprise and commercial developers and content creators,"
said Jon Kannegaard, vice president of products of the JavaSoft subsidiary
of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Sun and Netscape are continuing to work closely
to make it even easier for developers to create Java applications."

To support the widespread development efforts around its open software
platform, Netscape announced separately today significant enhancements to
its development partners program, called Netscape DevEdge. The enhanced
program offers additional marketing and technical support for Netscape
developers, making it easier for them to create and market their live
applications for Intranets and the Internet. Today, more than 12,000
enterprise and commercial developers, resellers, integrators and creative
professionals are part of Netscape DevEdge.
