NETSCAPE ANNOUNCES NETSCAPE NEWS SERVER 2.0 FOR CREATING AND MANAGING
DISCUSSION GROUPS

NEWEST ADDITION TO NETSCAPE SUITESPOT EXTENDS SUPPORT FOR COMMON
MANAGEMENT, ADMINISTRATION AND SECURITY FEATURES THROUGHOUT THE SOFTWARE
SUITE

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (May 21, 1996) -- Netscape Communications Corporation
(NASDAQ: NSCP) today unveiled Netscape News Server 2.0 software for
creating and managing collaborative discussion groups on private Intranets
or across the Internet. Netscape News Server 2.0 is open standards-based
discussion group server software that enables companies to set up forums
for private discussions among employees or with outside customers or
business partners. A beta version of the new software will be available
for download from the Netscape Internet site this week.

Netscape News Server 2.0 is the latest addition to the Netscape SuiteSpot
integrated suite of Web server software for Intranets. Netscape News
Server 2.0 extends support for common network management, encrypted remote
administration and security features throughout the server suite, making
it easy for MIS professionals to set up and manage a corporate Intranet.
The common administrative features of Netscape News Server 2.0 and other
Netscape SuiteSpot servers can be accessed remotely via the network from
computers running Netscape Navigator or other standards-based Internet
client software, dramatically reducing the cost of deploying these
applications and training and supporting users.

"Netscape SuiteSpot servers - including the new Netscape News Server 2.0 -
enable enterprise customers to create full-scale communications and
collaboration applications based on Internet standards, providing a new
level of functionality and affordability for Intranet applications," said
Mike Homer, senior vice president of marketing at Netscape.

"Discussion groups are an important Intranet component because they can
remove time and location as barriers to collaboration, enabling people
worldwide to share information and work together on common projects,"
Homer continued.

Netscape News Server 2.0 makes it easy for users to post and read messages
about topics of common interest. Discussion groups hosted with the new
product can support multiple conversations - or threads - on a given
subject, displaying postings in the context of the prior discussion. This
threading capability allows a reader to follow an entire discussion right
from its inception, even if the reader joins well after the discussion has
started.

Organizations can use Netscape News Server to improve communication with
selected partners and customers inside and outside the organization. For
example, electronic publications can develop communities of interest
around their content; a sales force can discuss product features and
benefits with potential customers; and marketing departments can review
advertising campaigns and guide the work of an external agency. Companies
can also use Netscape News Server to create electronic product support
forums to reduce support costs.

In addition to common network management, administration and security
features, Netscape News Server 2.0 adds sophisticated access control for
restricting access to private discussion groups by certain users or
groups. To protect communication, Netscape News Server includes support
for X.509 digital certificates and the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) 3.0 open
protocol for Internet encryption.

Similar to other Netscape SuiteSpot servers, Netscape News Server delivers
next-generation performance across multiple platforms through support for
the open standards of the Internet. Support for the Network News Transfer
Protocol (NNTP) on TCP/IP networks means Netscape News Server can
replicate discussion groups to Usenet-compatible news servers.
Additionally, the product supports rich content postings via Multipurpose
Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), HyperText Markup Language (HTML), GIF and
JPEG.

Netscape SuiteSpot is an integrated suite of cross-platform server software
that brings the open standards of the Internet to users on internal
corporate networks or "Intranets." The product line enables live content
publishing, collaboration and application customization by corporate users
via easily accessible Netscape Server Plug-in Application Programming
Interfaces (APIs) and support for the Java and JavaScript programming
languages.

A beta version of Netscape News Server 2.0 will be available this week for
download from the Netscape Internet site for major UNIX and Microsoft
Windows NT operating environments. Individual pricing is expected to be
$995, or $3,995 as part of Netscape SuiteSpot, and will be determined at
the time of product shipment.
