12 INDUSTRY LEADERS INCLUDING APPLE AND IBM JOIN SUPPORT FOR NETSCAPE
LIVEMEDIA FRAMEWORK FOR INTERNET MULTIMEDIA

LIVEMEDIA SUPPORTERS TO OFFER INTERNET PHONE, AUDIO, AND VIDEO SOLUTIONS
THAT INTEROPERATE ACROSS SOFTWARE PLATFORMS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (April 30, 1996) -- Netscape Communications
Corporation today announced that 12 leading hardware and software vendors,
including Apple Computer, Inc. and IBM Corporation, have joined 11
original supporters of the Netscape LiveMedia framework. Netscape
LiveMedia is a standards-based framework for bringing real-time audio and
video to the Netscape open software platform, enabling Netscape and
third-party companies to develop interoperable multimedia solutions for
business collaboration and videoconferencing. Netscape delivered the first
elements of Netscape LiveMedia - including Netscape LiveVideo, Netscape
LiveAudio and support for Internet telephony - in Netscape Navigator 3.0,
a major release of its popular Internet client software now available in a
public beta version.

The 12 new companies supporting LiveMedia are: Adaptive Media Technologies,
Apple Computer, @ONCE, Farallon Communications, Four11, IBM, RADVision,
SoftCom, Starlight Networks, OZ Interactive, Vivo Software and Winnov.
They bring to 23 the number of companies supporting the Netscape LiveMedia
framework. The 11 original supporters are Progressive Networks, Adobe
Systems, Digital Equipment Corporation, Macromedia, NetSpeak, OnLive!
Technologies, Precept Software, Silicon Graphics, VDOnet, VocalTec and
Xing.

The announcement was made at Internet World, an Internet trade show and
exhibition where LiveMedia supporters are exhibiting LiveMedia-based
solutions that interoperate.

"LiveMedia is a vital industry initiative to deliver the cross-platform
hardware and software products companies need for audio, video and
telephone collaboration on intranets and the Internet," said Bob Lisbonne,
vice president of client product marketing at Netscape. "With the
LiveMedia framework, Netscape is providing an open foundation on which
member technologies can innovate and interoperate."

"Netscape LiveMedia is an important industry framework that provides an
open, standards-based approach to developing and integrating collaborative
multimedia applications," said Satjiv Chahil, senior vice president of
corporate marketing at Apple. "Apple will support LiveMedia in Apple
Quicktime Conferencing (QTC) initiatives and work closely with the
Netscape LiveMedia supporters and standards organizations to bring our
customers fully interoperable solutions."

"Internet telephony and its increased usage within the enterprise and
consumer markets makes interoperability essential to broader deployment of
this technology," said John Patrick, vice president of Internet technology
at IBM. "Netscape LiveMedia represents an open platform upon which to
build collaborative streaming or interactive audio, video and data
applications. We look forward to working with Netscape to include IBM
advanced technology and promote open protocols."

Based on open Internet standards and documented protocols and interfaces,
Netscape LiveMedia is a framework for multimedia communications that
provides a common platform from which interoperable cross-platform
solutions can evolve. Netscape LiveMedia will enable users to have easier
access to new Internet applications such as audio and video on demand,
real-time videoconferencing and Internet telephony as a standard component
of future versions of Netscape clients, servers and development tools.
Based on the Internet Realtime Transport Protocol (RTP), RFC number 1889,
and other open audio and video standards such as MPEG, H.261 and GSM,
Netscape LiveMedia enables products from supporting companies to work
together seamlessly, providing users with a range of real-time audio and
video capabilities on the Internet.

By using the Netscape LiveMedia framework, for example, Voxware's TeleVox
Internet phone, running on a Microsoft Windows 95 PC, can communicate with
both Apple's QTC phone or Netscape's Internet telephony technology running
on a Unix platform. TeleVox features patent-pending RT24 digital voice
compression/decompression (codec) that provides real-time speech quality,
clarity and stability for Internet phone and conferencing connections,
while consuming only 2400bps of bandwidth. Netscape LiveMedia technology
can also support streaming audio, Intranet H.320 videoconferencing
connectivity and server-based group collaboration applications.

Netscape LiveMedia also includes support for rich collaboration features
through Internet telephony technology gained from Netscape's acquisition
of InSoft, Inc. The new technology offers Internet telephony and a shared
"whiteboard" that enables users to view and edit graphics in real time
using sophisticated drawing, zoom and markup tools. It also provides
high-quality audio conferencing with full duplex sound, allowing users to
send and receive calls directly from Web pages, talk "live" with friends,
or work collaboratively with colleagues worldwide via the Internet. This
telephony capability also lets users send and receive messages, and
includes a Web-based phone book to help users locate one another for
conferencing and an answering machine that records messages and caller
information.
