Novell Invites Customers to "Dare to Compare"; Seminar Comparing NetWare
4.1 to Windows NT Server Travels Worldwide

Novell Web Site Provides Comprehensive Competitive Information on NetWare
4.1 and Windows NT Server

OREM, UTAH -- MAY 1, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that its popular
"Dare to Compare" seminar--which offers a side-by-side comparison of
Novell's NetWare 4.1 and Microsoft's Windows NT Server operating
systems--is expected to reach more than 20,000 people as it travels
worldwide beginning this spring. Dare to Compare offers customers a live
demonstration of why NetWare 4.1, the world's best-selling network
operating system, is the best NOS for building a reliable, easily managed
and cost-effective network that runs the applications organizations need
to run their businesses. Dare to Compare seminars have been held in
Atlanta and New Orleans, with events scheduled for sites in Chicago and
Canada in May.

Novell also announced the availability of the "NetWare Comparative Look"
section of its World Wide Web site, which offers a comprehensive set of
information comparing the NetWare 4.1 and Windows NT Server operating
systems. Documents provided on the web include the popular "Reality Check"
documents that cut through industry hype to provide accurate information
from independent industry sources that customers can use in making network
purchase decisions, and the "Networking Top Ten" questions customers
should ask when evaluating their network options. This section of the web
site can be reached at

Dare to Compare Demonstrates NetWare 4.1 and Windows NT Server in Action

The Dare to Compare seminar is built around a case-study scenario that
follows two companies as they implement a wide-area network- -one company
using NetWare 4.1, and the other using Windows NT Server. During the live
demo of network installation & management, the seminar highlights the
reasons that more customers worldwide are turning to NetWare 4.1 than to
any other network operating system:

* BEST NETWORK SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS CLIENTS: NetWare 4.1 not only supports
all major desktop operating systems, including Macintosh and OS/2, but it
also provides better support for Windows clients than any other network.
Novell's Windows clients offer customers important features that Microsoft
clients don't deliver, including full access to Novell Directory Services
(NDS)--the industry-standard directory integrated with NetWare 4.1--as
well as autoreconnect for mobile and remote users, and signature and
packet encryption. Novell's Windows clients also feature the Novell
Application Launcher, a solution that links with NDS, enabling
administrators to easily manage users' desktop applications.

* SUPERIOR APPLICATION SUPPORT: Today more than 4,000 applications are
available for NetWare--more than for any other network operating system in
the world. More than 160 of these applications take advantage of NDS,
making networks easier to access, easier to manage, and less expensive to
own, operate and maintain.

* MANAGEABILITY: NDS is a true hierarchical directory service that enables
businesses to track and connect all of a network's users, workgroups,
hardware and software on one common access and administrative framework.
NDS provides a single point of network administration, enabling network
administrators to drag and drop network "objects" to easily add and delete
users, administer security privileges, give users and workgroups access to
network resources, move users and workgroups from one part of an
organization to another, and so on. Windows NT Server provides domains, a
flat-file database analogous to NetWare 3's bindery. Windows NT Server
also offers "trust relationships," a series of complex connections between
domains that is analogous to the NetWare Name Service technology Novell
discontinued four years ago.

* SECURITY: The National Computer Security Center (NCSC) is in the process
of certifying NetWare as C2 Red Book ("trusted network") secure--the only
network operating system currently accepted for certification. Windows NT
has received C2 certification as a standalone workstation only.

* COST OF OWNERSHIP: According to International Data Corporation (IDC), a
leading independent research firm, NetWare 4.1 is seven to 22 percent less
expensive to use than Windows NT Server, primarily because NetWare 4.1
requires from 15 to 43 percent fewer people to manage the network.
Additionally, NetWare 4.1 costs from 10 to 35 percent less than Windows NT
Server in initial setup costs.

* MARKET INFRASTRUCTURE: Novell has the largest sales and support
infrastructure of any network vendor in the world, ensuring that customers
can get NetWare support anytime and anywhere. More than 200,000 certified
professionals worldwide support NetWare today, with another 125,000 in the
certification process. Approximately 4,400 certified professionals--less
than three percent of Novell's total--today support Windows NT Server.

"Reality Checks" and Networking Top 10

For more detailed information about the networking strengths of NetWare 4.1
compared to Windows NT Server, customers can visit the "NetWare
Comparative Look" section of Novell's web site. This section of the web
provides a complete set of information comparing the networking
capabilities of NetWare 4.1 and Windows NT Server, including market
analyst reports, research reports, "Reality Check" documents and the
Networking Top 10. Reality Check documents are available on topics
including directory services, network security, management, cost of
ownership, migration, groupware and enterprise networking. The Networking
Top 10 covers the top 10 questions customers should ask when choosing a
network operating system. These questions include: Does your NOS have a
directory? How scalable is your NOS? How well does your network perform?
How many client platforms does your NOS support and what functionality is
available? Is your NOS secure beyond the desktop? How easy is it to obtain
reasonable, competent network support for your NOS?
