NETMANAGE TO SUPPORT JAVA IN NEWS READER AND EMAIL CLIENT

Licensing Agreements with Sun, Borland Give Java New Jolt in
Ground-breaking Use of the Technology

CUPERTINO, CALIF. -- MAY 28, 1996 -- NetManage (NASDAQ: NETM), the leading
provider of standards-based IntraNet solutions, today announced aggressive
plans for implementing Java into the next release of its Chameleon
IntraNet Desktop suite of applications. The company also announced related
licensing agreements with Sun Microsystems and Borland, Inc. for key
enabling technology. NetManage will pioneer new uses of Java by imbedding
it into upcoming versions of its NetManage JetMail email client and
NetManage Forum group collaboration client. The first implementation of
the agreements will be a Java-enabled version of NetManage's popular free
Web browser, WebSurfer.

Leveraging Java's ability to create and execute portable, cross-platform
applications, NetManage developers are at work integrating Java support
into Chameleon's new Forum group collaboration client, and JetMail
IntraNet mail client. The result will add a whole new dimension of
functionality to IntraNet news and mail-based applications that previously
only forwarded text messages. By Java enabling them, these popular
standards-based IntraNet client applications will be able to perform a
much broader range of specific corporate tasks.

"No one else in the industry is even talking about using Java in the ways
which we're already at work implementing it," says Willie Tejada, vice
president of product marketing for NetManage. "Imagine within a corporate
IntraNet, the human resources department being able to send everyone an
email message that includes a Java-applet form. All the employee has to do
to complete the form is select choices from pop-up menus and fill in
database-like fields within their email client. Users won't have to chase
down information anymore -- the information will come to them, with Java
support built into many of their IntraNet tools. This will be the kind of
solution our technology will soon offer."

In addition to licensing the Java programming language itself from Sun
Microsystems, NetManage has also licensed Borland's "just-in-time" dynamic
Java compiler, AppAccelerator, to improve the speed and performance of
Java applications running through NetManage clients.

The Java licensing agreements are the latest in NetManage's long history of
dedication to open Internet standards. NetManage IntraNet applications are
already the first to feature a complete set of Microsoft ActiveX controls,
as well as other standards such as Netscape plug-ins.

"We applaud NetManage's vision in implementing our Java technology into
these new applications," said David Spenhoff, director of product
marketing for JavaSoft, the business unit of Sun Microsystems responsible
for Java. "Java has already proven itself successful in the Web
environment. We see corporate IntraNets as including other Internet
protocols besides HTTP, and we are glad NetManage will help Java to become
a part of that."

TECHNICAL BUILDING BLOCKS

NetManage is taking an innovative approach in its product architecture,
which uses both the popular Java technology and an underlying ActiveX
architecture for its Internet and IntraNet applications. Based
fundamentally on Microsoft's ActiveX standard for component functionality,
NetManage is able to imbed all of the Internet networking protocols into a
variety of its Internet and IntraNet applications. Adding support for high
speed Java interpretation and execution into this architecture gives users
and programmers the best of both worlds. As an example, in the next
release of NetManage's Chameleon IntraNet Desktop suite, to be released
this summer, users will be able to surf the Web directly from their email
and news reader client applications, without using their Web browsers -
and also execute Java applets.
