MICROSOFT INCORPORATES JAVA AS A FEATURE OF WINDOWS

Integrates Java With ActiveX Technologies to Enable Richer Applications

REDMOND, Wash. _ April 30, 1996 _ Microsoft Corp. announced today it will
integrate support for Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java technology into future
versions of the Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems.
This new feature of Windows will allow developers and webmasters using the
Java language to immediately use more than 1,000 ActiveX
technology-compatible tools, applications and components to build
innovative applications for the Internet.

Based on the Component Object Model (COM) standard, ActiveX provides
object-based interoperability between development tools, components,
applications and operating systems such as Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Integrating Java with ActiveX will enable Java developers to easily take
direct advantage of Windows features such as sound, high-performance
graphics and third-party applications and components. This will enable
much richer applications than are currently possible using Java
technology. Microsoft's implementation of Java will be further enhanced
with a high-performance, just-in-time (JIT) compiler. "Microsoft's
integrated implementation will revolutionize Java development," said Bob
Muglia, vice president for development tools at Microsoft.

"We'll support developers who are creating cross-platform applications in
Java, although many developers, especially those in commercial settings,
will choose to exploit the full power of Windows and ActiveX to create
faster and more compelling applications."

The new implementation of Java will initially be available to users in
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, Microsoft's Web browser, due in beta next
month. It also will be integrated in future versions of Windows as they
become available.

"We're always excited when Microsoft multiplies the number of sockets our
products can plug into," said Gustavo Eydelsteyn, president of VideoSoft,
a maker of prepackaged ActiveX controls. "We look forward to selling lots
of VideoSoft products to Java programmers. This is a business we can go
after without writing a single line of new code."

As part of Microsoft's license agreement for Java technology with Sun
Microsystems, this enhanced implementation of Java technology will be
licensed back to Sun as the reference implementation of Java for the
Windows platform.
