MIPS PARTNERS SHIP TEN MILLIONTH RISC CHIP

MIPS Recognized as Broadest, Most Flexible RISC Processor, Averaging One
Processor Shipped Every Three Seconds

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (May 16, 1996) -- MIPS Technologies, Inc., the
microprocessor technology subsidiary of Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE:
SGI), today announced that its semiconductor partner companies have
reached total, cumulative shipments of 10 million processors since the
architecture began in 1985. Partly due to MIPS' growing success in the
consumer electronics market, approximately 80 percent of the 10 million
processors have been shipped within the last 18 months. Last calendar
year, MIPS partners shipped over 5.5 million processors, making MIPS the
largest computer RISC architecture in the world. MIPS shipped 1.67 million
chips in 1994. This year the MIPS partners expect to ship over 10 million
processors, bringing the cumulative total to over 18 million processors
shipped.

"MIPS is becoming the runaway success of the RISC microprocessor market,"
said Ron Bernal, president of MIPS. "The world is seeing just the tip of
the MIPS iceberg. As we further our digital media processing capabilities
and performance leadership, MIPS will continue to lead the market,
spanning high-performance computing to high-volume embedded and consumer
applications."

In addition to powering some of the most advanced computer systems in the
world, MIPS processors serve as the engine for the newly debuted Nintendo
64 home video game,

Sony's successful PlayStation video game, satellite set-top boxes,
networking components from Cisco Systems, printers, copiers, X-terminals
and hundreds of other products. MIPS processors are also slated for
low-cost network computers, intelligent televisions, next-generation
personal digital assistants (PDAs) and a myriad of other products.

MIPS microprocessors are manufactured and shipped by its world-class
semiconductor partners: Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; LSI Logic
Corporation; NEC Corporation; NKK Corporation; Philips Semiconductor and
Toshiba Corporation. These partners bring state-of-the-art semiconductor
manufacturing process technology, high custom integration for
"computer-on-a-chip" applications, volume production applications,
derivative design techniques and other value-added competencies to the
overall success of the MIPS architecture.

The discussion in this news release of new products and technologies
contains forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties,
including the timely release to manufacturing, the availability of
components from suppliers, the acceptance of the technology described in
this release, the efforts of third parties to develop and maintain their
products, the impact of competitive products and pricing, and the other
risks detailed from time to time in Silicon Graphics' SEC reports,
including the report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 1996.
Actual results may vary materially.

MIPS Technologies, Inc. designs and supplies the world's most advanced RISC
microprocessor technology. The company tests, certifies and licenses its
processor technology to its semiconductor partners which provide
processors for the computer system, emerging consumer and embedded control
markets. MIPS microprocessors power systems from a number of computer
industry leaders, including Siemens Nixdorf AG, Silicon Graphics, Inc.,
Sony Corporation, Tandem Computers Inc., NEC Technologies, Inc., and
others. MIPS Technologies, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon
Graphics, Inc. and is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif.
