MADGE NETWORKS' LANSWITCH NAMED TOP PERFORMER BY DATA COMMUNICATIONS

LANswitch Beats the Competition to Earn Magazine's 100Base-T Tester's
Choice Award

San Jose, Calif. -- (May 28, 1996) -- In the first-ever independent stress
test of 100BASE-T LAN switches, Madge Networks' LANswitch placed first
among competing products, out-performing Cisco Systems' Catalyst 5000 and
Nbase Communications' Megaswitch. In competitive test results published in
the May 1996 issue of Data Communications, Madge's LANswitch turned in
what the magazine characterized as a "nearly perfect performance," beating
the competition in a battery of tests designed to measure speed, latency
and stress handling. As a result, Madge's LANswitch earned the magazine's
Tester's Choice award for product excellence.

"Networks that use 100BASE-T switches as their core technologies are
becoming increasingly prevalent in the market as network managers look for
ways to increase bandwidth with minimal disruption," said Shmuel Levy,
vice president and general manager of Madge Networks' Enterprise Systems
Division. "Data Communications' competitive test results validate our own
research and corroborate what our customers have been telling us -- Madge
delivers the premier high-speed Ethernet switching technology on the
market today."

TEST METHODOLOGY

Data Communications, working with European Network Laboratories (ENL)
invited nine Fast Ethernet switch vendors to submit their products for
competitive evaluation. Of these, only Cisco, Madge and Nbase participated
in the test. Data Communications and European Network Laboratories
designed a suite of tests to evaluate speed, latency and stress handling
capabilities. Test traffic was generated and its effects evaluated by a
network analyzer.

* Speed trials -- The network analyzer sent a precise number of 64- byte
frames through each switch and measured the time it took for the frames to
cross the switch and return to the analyzer. At 100 percent saturation,
Madge's LANswitch performed 32 percent better than its closest competitor,
processing 71,849 frames per second to Cisco's 55,015 frames per second.

* Latency measurements -- This test measured the time required for a frame
to enter an inbound port and exit an outbound port. Madge's LANswitch
exhibited the lowest latency rates in this test.

* Stress handling -- ENL designed two related tests to evaluate burst and
overload handling. Madge's LANswitch achieved the only perfect score on
these tests.

ABOUT MADGE NETWORK'S LANSWITCH

The LANswitch is based on a modular architecture that allows network
managers to match user needs today and migrate from shared media, to
switched media and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). In addition to
shared-media modules, the LANswitch supports the industry's best range of
switching modules for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, Token Ring and ATM.
The LANswitch also provides quality of service features, including traffic
prioritization and active congestion management, to facilitate migration
to ATM-based networks.

The LANswitch is manageable via Madge's Switched Monitoring (SMON ), a
unique Remote Monitoring (RMON)-compliant application that lets network
managers monitor all switch traffic simultaneously and gain a
comprehensive top-down view of traffic flow.
