Lucent Technologies teams with Sun on Java telephony specification

BASKING RIDGE, N. J. -- Lucent Technologies said it has developed with Sun
Microsystems specifications to enable integration of the Internet and
telephony using the Java language.

Users will be able to link the graphical, multimedia Internet with their
voice networks, combining documents, electronic mail, fax, video, and
telephony to solve business problems.

For example, Lucent Technologies demonstrated a Java conference call
application at Computer Telephony Expo in March. Using this application,
individuals could use their computers to establish and manage conference
calls on the voice network from their computer. By pointing and clicking
on their computer, individuals could be added or removed at will from a
voice conference call. Potentially, individuals could also share documents
and other images in the virtual conference room.

"The Internet offers enormous potential for customers seeking the richer
communications environments born of the blend of voice and data networks,"
said Carl Pavarini, vice president, Multimedia Market Offers. "Our work
here with Sun is another of the many steps we're taking to provide our
customers an innovative, and secure path to the communications networks of
the future."

The Java telephony object specification allows software developers to write
applications that jointly manage voice and data connections. Using this
specification, applications will be able to integrate existing
call-control software, including Novell's TSAPI, Microsoft's TAPI, SunXTL
and others with the worldwide web. The complete Java media specification
is expected to be announced by Sun tomorrow at the JavaOne Developers'
Confererence in San Francisco.

In addition to working with Sun on the Java telephony object specification,
Lucent Technologies has integrated Internet and telephony capabilities in
the company's recently announced Limbo programming language.

Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and
private networks, communications systems and software, consumer and
business telephone systems and microelectronics components. Bell
Laboratories is the research and development arm of the company.
