Lotus Announces Availability of Lotus Notes:Newsstand on the Web

Lotus Also Previews Solution for Creating and Managing Web Sites

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 30, 1996 -- Lotus Development Corp. today announced
the availability of Lotus Notes:Newsstand on the Web, an implementation of
a Lotus electronic application framework that enables publishers to easily
expand the reach of their publications to millions of potential Internet
subscribers. Newsstand on the Web builds on Notes' capabilities for
managing documents with a complete set of tools for distributing
subscription-based publications over the World Wide Web. Lotus also
previewed a forthcoming Notes-based solution for creating and managing Web
sites, WebMaster's Apprentice.

"Today Lotus is illustrating the value that Notes offers for doing business
on the Web and creating and managing Web content," said Karen Warner,
senior director, Internet Marketing for Lotus. "Newsstand on the Web
brings together the power of Notes and the Internet to provide a complete
solution for delivering business periodicals via the World Wide Web.
Webmaster's Apprentice will provide customers the tools they need to
easily create and manage their Web sites."

Electronic Application Frameworks Support Rapid Deployment of Web-Enabled
Applications

Lotus Notes:Newsstand on the Web is the first implementation of an
electronic application framework. Lotus Notes-based electronic application
frameworks allow Notes users to rapidly deploy Web-enabled applications.
Each electronic application framework will leverage "building blocks"
specifically designed to extend to the Internet a corporation's
publishing, marketing, customer service or electronic commerce
applications. The Publishing framework provides the ability to publish
formatted text, graphics and images via Notes to the Web. It also provides
secure and controlled distribution of information that can be accessed by
a Notes client or Web browser. Newsstand on the Web utilizes several
electronic application frameworks building blocks including:

o Publishing, which includes Publishing Templates with built-in formatting
for publishing in Notes or on the Web. Users can preview how their
publication will look using a particular Publishing Template before
publishing their data. Publishing Templates include formats that create
more sophisticated looking Web pages than could be produced using the
Lotus InterNotes Web Publisher alone. Publishing Templates provide a
consistency of functionality, look and feel, and support for security
between Notes and Web versions of documents.

o Subscription Management, which leverages Notes' workflow and approval
mechanisms to process subscriptions. It also includes a security module to
ensure that material is made available by those authorized to receive it.

o Security, which enables Web browser security information such as
registration, name and password to be stored in a Notes database. When a
user attempts to access information on the Web or in Notes using a
browser, the user's password and ID will be verified in the Notes database
before access to the information is granted.

Provides a Complete Solution for Publishing on the Web

Newsstand on the Web eliminates the administrative headaches of publishing
on the World Wide Web. The publisher does not have to maintain a Web site,
worry about securing access to that Web site for subscription- based
content, or have knowledge of HTML to design a Web-based publication.
Newsstand on the Web also equips publishers with the capabilities to
provide comprehensive customer service and collect feedback on content
through direct contact with subscribers. Newsstand on the Web also
collects and analyzes subscriber demographic information which publishers
can use to improve marketing efforts and tailor content to the interests
of their target market.

Newsstand on the Web expands a publication's reach to anyone using a
standard Web browser while retaining the advantages of Notes' easy
navigation, viewing and information management capabilities. To subscribe,
a user accesses a guide on the Newsstand home page (http://www.lnn.com) to
view a selection of available publications. After users select the
publications to which they wish to subscribe, the subscription requests
are reviewed and approved by their corporate Newsstand coordinator, who
then requests a license for the corporation. Upon approval of the
Corporate License by the information provider, a security program is
executed on the Newsstand server, sending the user the address, or URL,
required to access the publication.

"Newsstand on the Web has made it easy for us to receive and share
publications critical to our business," said Kevin Miles, manager of
Library Services, Haynes and Boone, L.L.P. "We can access the publications
using the Netscape browser and use the familiar search tools of Notes. The
publications are well-designed and easy to navigate."

More than fifty publications are currently available for subscription from
Newsstand on the Web including: BNA's Banking Report, Daily Tax Report,
and The United States Law Week from The Bureau of National Affairs (BNA);
Communications Business & Finance, Electronic Mail & Messaging Systems and
Multimedia Daily from BRP Publications and Banking Monitor, Natural Gas
Monitor, and Security Monitor from Information Inc.
