Lotus Notes Release 4 Wins Multiple Industry Awards, Builds Momentum as
Industry Standard for the Enterprise and Interenterprise

Recognized as Best Customer Solution for Client/Server Messaging, Groupware
and the Internet

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 29, 1996 -- Lotus Development Corp.'s Lotus Notes
Release 4, according to industry trade press, continues to offer customers
the best unified solution that integrates messaging, groupware and the
Internet for building and distributing custom client/server applications.
Industry trade magazines have consistently given the new release of Notes
top honors over its competitors in awards and reviews. Lotus Development
Corp. also recently won Electronic Mail and Messaging Systems' (EMMS)
Messaging Company of the Year award for 1995-1996. (EMMS, February 19,
1996)

Notes Release 4, the result of more than six years of in-market experience,
has received several awards since it began shipping in January 1996,
including Network Computing's Well Connected Awards in two categories:
Best Collaborative Software and Best Electronic Messaging Software;
CommunicationsWeek's Max Award for best enterprise messaging server;
Mobile Insight's Mobility Award for best application or groupware; PC Week
Labs' First Annual IT Excellence Awards for best groupware platform, as
well as being named Analyst's Choice; and CM Corporate's (Belgium)
Networking Award for best e-mail/groupware product for 1996.

"Through these top industry honors, Notes has demonstrated why it is the de
facto standard in messaging and groupware today," said Michael D. Zisman,
Lotus' executive vice president and CEO. "Notes' advanced enterprise
client/server messaging and tight integration with the World Wide Web,
combined with its unmatched custom application development capabilities,
give organizations the ability to create and distribute strategic business
process applications within an organization or globally via the
Internet."

Chosen by staff and contributing editors, Network Computing's Well
Connected Awards are based on product testing conducted throughout the
year. Network Computing ranked Notes Release 4 highest in the Best
Electronic Messaging Software category for its enhanced mail user
interface, bi-directional replication, links to external database engines
and built-in, cross-platform application development with LotusScript
3.0.

Network Computing also chose Notes Release 4 as the Best Collaborative
Software, stating that Notes' integration with the Internet,
multi-platform support, and manageability, scalability and performance
enhancements, combined with the decrease in price have, "further cemented
Notes' position as the premier collaboration product." According to
Network Computing, "With new Internet integration, improved messaging,
document links, forms, workflow, document sharing and generalized
databases, Notes seems to have it all." (Network Computing, April 1,
1996)

In recent comparative testing of enterprise messaging servers by
CommunicationsWeek, Notes Release 4 scored higher than Microsoft Exchange
and Novell GroupWise in four out of five categories, including
architecture, security, groupware and database, to capture the
CommunicationsWeek Max Award for best enterprise messaging server.
CommunicationsWeek's testing found that: "Lotus Notes is much more than an
enterprise-wide mail server. It is the standard against which every
groupware product on the market measures itself and features a database
server and document management server with programming support as well as
workflow capabilities that are the envy of its competitors."
(CommunicationsWeek, February 26, 1996)

"The groupware market is rapidly growing as corporations look for robust
and stable environments that can serve as the corporate messaging
foundation while leveraging the power of the Internet," said Ian Campbell,
director of collaborative technologies at International Data Corporation.
"With Notes Release 4, Lotus builds on its many years of groupware
knowledge by providing companies with a mature and comprehensive groupware
solution that tightly integrates client/server messaging with the
Internet, existing corporate data stores and a large number of third party
applications. This integration provides the flexibility to match the
capabilities of the groupware solution to the needs of the organization."
