Legato Systems and Interlink Computer Sciences Announce Joint Development,
Marketing, and Customer Support Alliance for the Enterprise Storage
Management Market

INTRODUCES "ENTERPRISE-CLASS" SOLUTION COMBINING THE BEST OF DISTRIBUTED
CLIENT/SEVER AND CENTRALIZED STORAGE MANAGEMENT

PALO ALTO, CA, MAY 20, 1996--Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a leader
in the enterprise storage management software market, and Interlink
Computer Sciences, Inc., a leading supplier of high-performance solutions
for enterprise networked systems management, today announced a strategic
alliance to deliver an enterprise-class storage management solution
combining the best of centralized and distributed client/server storage
management architectures.

As a result of the alliance, Interlink Computer Sciences and Legato Systems
announce a comprehensive agreement between the two industry leaders which
will draw on each company's strengths to deliver new product, sales and
support options to meet customers' requirements for managing large, highly
distributed storage management systems.

Customer Benefits

As large enterprises continue to evolve and expand their information
systems and client/server networks, the challenge of enterprise-class
storage management becomes more difficult. In most large enterprises, the
evolution of information systems has resulted in a mix of two separate
categories of network storage. There is a set of storage devices installed
on clients and servers which are attached to and closely affiliated with
the mainframe. There is also storage installed for client/server
applications on distributed servers under a multitude of operating
systems. In the past, these systems have been isolated from one another,
resulting in separate storage administration. This has made
enterprise-wide systems management an unmet critical requirement of all
large enterprises.

This alliance provides customers with greatly enhanced flexibility to set
and implement global storage management policy using one or all of the
following options:

* CENTRALIZED STORAGE MANAGEMENT: Customers can utilize existing HARBOR
Backup products, with an MVS host and a wide range of client platforms, to
manage desktops and departmental servers through mainframe administration
and storage management.

* DISTRIBUTED STORAGE MANAGEMENT: Customers can utilize existing NetWorker
products, across the widest range of platforms in the industry, to manage
desktops and departmental servers through distributed storage management
servers. Customers will be able to install this environment in 1996, with
the knowledge that they can easily upgrade to a more centralized solution
in the future.

* DISTRIBUTED STORAGE MANAGEMENT WITH MAINFRAME DATA REPLICATION: Customers
can use NetWorker products, along with the HARBOR Agent for NetWorker and
HARBOR Host, as a three-tiered solution. Each NetWorker server operates
independently, with the option to replicate local storage to the
mainframe. In this scenario, HARBOR provides amainframe backup storage
repository for NetWorker, and a centralized disaster recovery strategy.
NetWorker manages the overall administration of the storage environment.

* CENTRALIZED STORAGE MANAGEMENT WITH ADVANCED DISTRIBUTED STORAGE SERVERS:
Customers can use HARBOR administration facilities and the HARBOR
Distributed Storage Server (DSS) architecture to manage storage across the
enterprise. A combination of NetWorker and HARBOR technologies will be
combined to deploy a new "Advanced DSS" intelligent storage platform
across a variety of systems. HARBOR will provide centralized management of
the entire environment, and NetWorker clients will also be supported.
Finally, all NetWorker and HARBOR product components can be installed and
updated by the HARBOR software distribution product.

"The strategic alliance between Legato and Interlink capitalizes on the
strengths and leadership position of the two respective companies," said
Louis C. Cole, president and CEO of Legato Systems. "Customers now have
the option to easily migrate from their current decentralized storage
deployment to a more centralized storage management strategy across the
industry's broadest platform support," Cole concluded.

Rob Enderle, senior industry analyst at Giga Information Group, said, "This
alliance makes a great deal of sense. Interlink's HARBOR product is
rapidly advancing on, and challenging, the market leader in the
mainframe-based distributed storage management market, and Legato is the
market leader with regard to client/server storage management products.
This alliance should result in the strongest solution for large companies
who need the robust fault tolerance of a Client/Server-to-Mainframe
solution to protect their data, particularly those that require the vendor
be hardware independent."

Agreement Highlights

Under the terms of the agreement, Interlink will develop the "HARBOR Agent
for NetWorker" which will be distributed by Legato. This offering will
provide customers with the selective archive, disaster recovery and
software distribution capabilities described above when used in concert
with HARBOR Backup and HARBOR/DM products.

The two companies have also agreed to cooperate on the integration of
Legato's technology and Interlink's Distributed Storage Server three-tier
enterprise architecture. Interlink intends to utilize NetWorker technology
as a component of future DSS offerings.

Interlink joins Legato's sales and marketing channel as a Premier partner,
authorized to represent Legato's storage management products, including
the new HARBOR Agent for NetWorker. Thus, Interlink will have the ability
to provide customers with a wide range of centralized and decentralized
solutions across an enterprise.

Charles Jepson, president and CEO of Interlink Computer Sciences, said,
"The alliance between Interlink and Legato will enable customers to enjoy
the flexibility provided when Legato's industry-leading network storage
management software is integrated with Interlink's HARBOR products. We
will provide customers with the interoperability and network management
capability of NetWorker, combined with the enterprise systems management
capabilities of HARBOR."

Pricing and Availability

The new flexibility will be released late this year when Legato will begin
release of the HARBOR Agent for NetWorker as a part of all worldwide
NetWorker product and update shipments. Every shipment of NetWorker after
this date will be "HARBOR-ready" and will include the capability to pursue
a tactical decentralized strategy today, with an option to move to a more
centrally managed solution (integrated with MVS-based functions) in the
future.

Pricing for the HARBOR Agent for NetWorker is not yet final, but is
targeted to be at less than $1,000 U.S. list per NetWorker server.
