JAVASOFT ANNOUNCES TWO-DIMENSIONAL GRAPHICS API

Sun Announces Intent to Integrate Adobe "Bravo" Imaging Model in Java

CUPERTINO, CA --- MAY 7, 1996 JavaSoft, an operating company of Sun
Microsystems, Inc., (NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced a two-dimensional
graphics API, (Application Programming Interface) another in JavaSoft's
series of API extensions for the Java platform. The company also announced
it has signed a letter of intent to license Adobe Systems Incorporated's
portable 2-D imaging model, code-named "Bravo."

Collaborating with Adobe, JavaSoft has produced a two-dimensional (2D)
specification, which will allow Java developers to create graphically-rich
Java programs and content for the World Wide Web. These collaborative APIs
are a part of the JavaMedia family of APIs that extend Java's
functionality for producing highly interactive, extensible, dynamic
network programs with rich media.

Signalling further collaboration between the two companies, JavaSoft also
announced its intent to license and distribute an implementation of the
Adobe "Bravo" imaging model with the Java platform. Based on Adobe's
industry-standard PostScriptr imaging model, Bravo will provide developers
with the first integrated API (application programming interface) for
displaying, printing and managing high-fidelity images, line-art and text
for network-based graphics. Internet applications based on "Bravo" will
ensure a higher-quality visual experience for viewing, interacting and
printing information on the Web. It is expected to be delivered on various
platforms, including Windows `95 and Windows NT, Mac OS, and Solaris for
SPARC.

"Our licensees will be very excited that JavaSoft is collaborating with
Adobe to integrate the Bravo technology into the Java platform," said Alan
Baratz, president of JavaSoft. "Together, Java and Adobe's Bravo define a
new standard for high-quality graphics and type on the Internet and
dramatically improve the look and feel of graphics on the Web."

"The limited graphics that characterize the World Wide Web today are due to
the lack of a rich, efficient graphical development environment." said
John Warnock, chairman and CEO of Adobe Systems Incorporated. "The
combination of Adobe "Bravo" and Java will deliver a new scalable, device
and platform-independent framework that promises to span the desktop, the
Internet and the emerging network appliances. This will enable developers
to create platform independent, graphically-rich applications that will
significantly enhance the visual experience on all platforms."

Baratz added that JavaSoft's goal has been to seek out industry leaders to
collaborate on APIs in their areas of expertise. "All the JavaSoft
partners collaborating on the API work have unique strengths," said
Baratz. "We can leverage that valuable expertise in driving the best open
computing platform for the web. Our mission at JavaSoft is to define truly
open standards for Java's APIs, through industry collaboration and
innovation. We then distribute those API innovations freely and openly to
all customers."
