Invincible Technologies unveils new generation of the Ultimate-5

Franklin, MA - May 27, 1996

Establishing the Standard for Performance in Open Systems Storage

Invincible Technologies Corporation (ITC) today announced a new generation
of the Ultimate-5 Series of high-performance, fault-tolerant RAID storage
subsystems. The new models, now available, use an entirely new array
controller which enhances performance over prior generations. This
announcement positions the Ultimate-5 Series among the leaders in the
information storage marketplace.

"The design goal of the new storage controllers was to provide twice the
throughput of the previous generation," states Steve Duplessie, ITC Chief
Executive Officer. "Removing the array controller as a potential system
bottleneck promotes better performance by reducing batch job and response
times, reducing costs, and increasing productivity. Overall, the new
Ultimate-5 Series delivers substantial benefits to the user, the
organization, and the bottom line."

The Ultimate-5 Series is designed to provide fast, reliable access to
critical information while simplifying the task of storage management.
This new design is centered around a standard CPU core, based on the
PowerPC 603e, with a 133 MB/second I/O bus. The new architecture increases
the cache support from 64 MBs to 256 MBs which will allow customers to
utilize 9 GB disks without reducing their cache to disk capacity ratio.
This provides a lower price per MB without degradation in performance.
(The higher density cache and disks will be available late this summer.)
In addition, the new controllers also support enhanced RAID 3 algorithms
for high throughput in imaging and video applications.

The performance benefits realized as a result of the enhanced array
controller include:

Increase in maximum disk reads per second by 114%
Increase in maximum cache reads per second by 130%
Increase in single file transfer MB per second by 25%
Increase in cache transfer MB per second by 45%

These enhancements are added to the already significant features of the
Ultimate-5 Series which include:

* Concurrent operation of multiple RAID levels for application
  specific tuning
* Integrated Battery Backup Unit that allows command completion and
controlled shutdown to facilitate quick recovery from power
  casualties
* Automatic data rebuild in the event of disk failure
* Duplicate and isolated data caches to ensure data integrity even
in the event of a circuit or component failure
* Tunable cache architecture to enhance database performance
* E-mail event notification (SNMP-compliant notification available
  in July, 1996)
* Networked management interface which provides the ability to
administer arrays from a single location even if arrays are
  distributed
* Easy-to-use graphical management tool which minimizes training
  and retraining costs
* Server failover software which allows fault-tolerant configuration
  for the Solaris environment

Pricing and Availability

The Ultimate-5 Series is based on a building block approach that consists
of three base configurations which support installations from 20 GB of
storage capacity to multiple TBs. Pricing varies based upon configuration
and starts at less than $30,000.
