JAVASOFT AND INTERSOLV DEVELOP & DELIVER STANDARD ODBC BRIDGE FOR JDBC

INTERSOLV JDBC/ODBC Bridge Provides Powerful Java-based Data Access for the
Web

ROCKVILLE, Maryland --- May 7, 1996 --- JavaSoft, a business unit of Sun
Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW), and INTERSOLV (NASDAQ: ISLI) today
announced that a standard Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) software
bridge will be added to JDBC , the database access application programming
interface (API) for the Java platform.

Jointly developed by JavaSoft and INTERSOLV, the JDBC/ODBC bridge will
provide access to data over the Internet through a single, standard ODBC
interface currently in use in a wide range of corporate databases. ODBC is
an existing database connectivity specification developed by the Microsoft
Corporation.

"Creating an ODBC software bridge for JDBC is a natural progression for
both JavaSoft's and INTERSOLV's plans to extend the functionality of Web
applications," said Teresa Wingfield, senior industry analyst, Giga
Information Group. "As the leading database connectivity provider,
INTERSOLV was a logical partner for JavaSoft. The introduction of the
JDBC/ODBC bridge will empower Internet developers with the enterprise-wide
database connectivity that is so critical in developing powerful Java
applications."

"We're working to ensure that Java provides a complete, robust API set for
enterprise information access and applications. That means embracing
technologies that are already out there --- like ODBC --- and creating our
own," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president, JavaSoft. "INTERSOLV's
involvement in the development process for the JDBC/ODBC bridge has been
vital in rapidly establishing a method of connectivity for JDBC, ODBC and
the Internet."

"Providing robust data access through the joint development of the
JDBC/ODBC bridge is a critical step towards creating more interactive
Internet applications and tapping the vast potential of the Internet,"
said Ed Peters, INTERSOLV vice president and general manager of the
DataDirect series of database connectivity solutions. "Java is breaking
new ground for Internet application development and INTERSOLV is pleased
to share our data connectivity expertise with JavaSoft to extend Java's
reach to corporate databases."

The ODBC bridge will become a transparent part of JDBC, an API set that is
the cornerstone of the JavaConnect family of APIs. The JDBC API is now
being finalized, and the jointly developed ODBC bridge will be in the beta
release of JDBC, due in June. JavaSoft expects to make the final version
of JDBC available this Fall. Compatible with all commercially available
ODBC drivers, the JDBC/ODBC bridge is currently in limited beta testing.

JDBC is a database access application programming interface (API) that
enables developers to write Java applications that access databases. JDBC
gives developers a framework to create portable solutions which access a
variety of databases. JDBC supports interchangeable DBMS drivers through a
driver manager that automatically loads the right JDBC-compatible driver
to talk to a given database.

JavaSoft will support compliance test suites that developers will use to
test JDBC-based products. INTERSOLV and JavaSoft are jointly developing
the JDBC test suites; they will be available in June.
