CORBA Market-leader Establishes Australian Base to Expand Presence in
Pacific Rim

IONA Technologies opens PacRim HQ in Perth, Western Australia

Perth, Western Australia, May 8th, 1996: IONA Technologies, the leading
developer of CORBA-compliant solutions, today announced the opening of its
Pacific Rim headquarters. Located in Perth, Western Australia and
initially staffed by a combination of six technical and sales personnel,
its presence will provide even faster technical support and product advice
to IONA's customer base throughout Australia and the Pacific Rim.

IONA's Orbix is the market leading implementation of the Object Management
Group's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). With Orbix,
corporations can build distributed, object-oriented applications which
interoperate across 20 different operating systems.

The move to Perth is also in line with IONA's push to provide the best
support for its customers around the world. With offices in Boston., MA.,
Dublin, Ireland and Perth, IONA can now switch its communications network
to provide round-the-clock technical support for Orbix customers.

"IONA is renowned for top quality service and support. As our customer base
expands we want to be able to maintain our own rigorous standards. Having
a technical presence at three locations around the world makes it easy to
provide frontline support 24 hours a day," said Dr. Chris Horn, CEO at
IONA Technologies.

The Australian office will be headed up by Dr David Glance who has over ten
years experience in systems development, six of these in distributed
object-oriented systems in a commercial setting. "The Pacific Rim
represents an exciting new market for us. We already have distributors and
resellers in Japan, and Australia. Establishing a presence in Perth will
enable us to provide closer support for these partners as well as for our
growing number of blue chip customers in the region," Dr Glance.

Dr Glance will also work to form new partnerships throughout the Pacific
Rim. In addition to Toyo Information Sytems in Japan and Object Design in
Australia IONA is keen to sign up resellers and distributors primarily in
Taiwan, Korea, Malaisa, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Discussions are already
at an advanced stage with potential partners in many of these locations.

IONA Technologies Ltd., was formed in 1991 and launched its first product,
Orbix in June 1993. Orbix is an implementation of the Object Management
Group's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) specification.
This cutting edge technology offers a standard way for corporate
developers to develop distributed, client/server software applications.
According to the Gartner Group, Orbix accounts for the largest installed
base of any object request broker. IONA is partly owned by Sun
Microsystems subsidiary, SunSoft, Inc.

Orbix currently runs on 20 operating systems from a single code base.
Platforms include: Windows 3.1x, Windows NT, Windows 95, OS/2, Macintosh
System 7.5, twelve different UNIX systems, OpenVMS AXP, MVS and
significant real-time operating systems. Orbix for Windows includes
powerful integration allowing OLE-enabled applications to transparently
invoke remote and local CORBA objects.

OrbixWeb is a full implementation of the CORBA specification in the Java
language. The combination of Orbix and Java enables the creation of
downloadable applets which are capable of accessing multiple, shared
backend CORBA services located across intranets and the Internet.

Orbix is used by thousands of developers world-wide in large and small
corporations. Reviewers, Editors and other industry-knowledgeable judges
at UNIX Review magazine picked Orbix as one of the outstanding products of
1995 in the December issue of the magazine.
