Intel Provides the Building Blocks Today for the New Business Computer

Pentium Pro Processor Platform Defines a New Level of Price/Performance And
Addresses the Total Cost Of Ownership For Business Computing

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. --May 6, 1996-- Intel Corporation announced today the
availability of the new 440FX chip set, new desktop management software,
and a new series of motherboards that round out the Pentium Pro processor
platform building blocks available for system manufacturers to deliver new
levels of performance to sub-$3000 desktops today.

"The combination of 32-bit performance, manageability and affordable system
price points make the Pentium Pro processor platform the highest
performance and the best value choice for business applications using
Windows* NT today," said Carl Everett, Intel senior vice president,
Desktop Products Group. He further added that together with industry
manageability standards such as the Desktop Management Interface (DMI),
the next wave of products for business will continue to deliver
outstanding value.

32-bit performance

With the Pentium Pro processor, users will have the best performance
available to run their more robust Windows NT, Windows 95, and other
32-bit operating systems and applications. The true multitasking
capability that these new operating environments provide will greatly
enhance the way users work with their PCs. Whether it's running more
applications concurrently, tapping new types of user interfaces like
graphics, working with client/server applications, or communicating
directly via the desktop, the combination of the Pentium Pro processor and
the 440FX-based systems offer a significant leap in processing power.
Desktop systems based on Pentium Pro-200MHz are 75% faster than the
highest available Pentium processor based 166MHz machine.**

Desktop Manageability and Instrumentation

Manageability features give information technology managers the ability to
remotely administer technical support tasks with greater ease. By taking
advantage of the latest system management tools and software
instrumentation, Pentium Pro processor-based systems deliver the benefits
of distributed computing while lowering the system total cost of
ownership. Information technology managers are increasingly deploying
standards-based management with DMI-enabled products such as Intel's
LANDeskR management applications.

In addition to other members of the LANDesk Management Group, Intel will
make available this quarter a new product, LANDesk Client Manager. LANDesk
Client Manager is a DMI-compliant application (including a software agent
and user interface) for local and network management of desktop client
systems. The application reduces the number of help desk calls by
supplying the user with self diagnostics such as a PC health meter and
local alert of potential problems. For example, the application will
indicate when memory usage is high or hardware components are likely to
fail. Together with well instrumented DMI-compliant systems, like those
based on Intel's motherboards, this capability provides new levels of
manageability for Intel-architecture based desktops. Now users can
maintain the flexibility, performance and compatibility of personal
computing while information technology managers benefit from lower support
and service costs.

Affordable system price points for today

Through new levels of chip set integration, the Intel 440FX PCIset delivers
high performance while using half the number of components than the
previous Intel PCIset. It offers additional features such as scalability
through Concurrent PCI, ease of use through Universal Serial Bus (USB)
support and reliability through Error Checking and Correction (ECC).

"For information technology managers, the 440FX PCIset in Pentium Pro
processor-based desktop and entry-level server systems will help lower the
costs associated with adding new capabilities, as well as lower the
corporate cost of ownership," stated Everett.

As the second chip set to support Intel's recently introduced Concurrent
PCI processing architecture, the 440FX maximizes system performance with
simultaneous activity on the CPU, PCI and ISA buses. Concurrent PCI
provides increased bandwidth to better support 2D/3D graphics, video and
audio, and processing for host-based applications, to deliver a quality
computing experience for users. The PCIset's USB capability delivers
plug-and-play benefit, and simplifies PC peripheral connectivity to the
business world. ECC delivers improved reliability to business system
users.

Integration and Time to Market

Intel also offers three standard motherboards to PC system manufacturers;
the VS440FX ATX form factor single processor based board; the AP440FX LPX
form factor single processor based board; and the PR440FX custom ATX form
factor dual processor based board. Various combinations of the following
features are available: Fast Ethernet, LANDesk Client Manager, video,
audio, SCSI and USB. The integration of these features combined with the
timely availability of these motherboards offers a time to market
advantage for our OEM customers.

By buying the best capabilities available today -- performance, management,
USB, audio, graphics --businesses can satisfy the ever increasing demands
of end users without the high costs incurred with touching the box later.
This will be especially evident to information technology managers who are
struggling with the high costs of service and support for 386- and
486-processor based machines today. Upgrading to the Pentium Pro platform
will have an immediate impact on the overall total cost of ownership.
