Informix Announces New Organizational Structure Focusing on Key Business
Solutions for Customers

MENLO PARK, CALIF., (MAY 13, 1996) -- Informix Software, Inc.
(NASDAQ:IFMX), the leading provider of innovative database technology,
today announced several executive appointments in the marketing, sales,
and research & development organizations, as well as the creation of
several new business units. Effective immediately, the new organizational
structure is designed to deliver superior value to customers through the
creation of focused market and technology teams led by the most seasoned
executives within the company.

"Over the last several years, we have not only grown our business rapidly,
but we have positioned the company as the database technology leader and a
true enterprise-level player," said Phil White, chairman and CEO,
Informix. "As we continue to grow, it is imperative that we operate within
a structure that allows us to continue focusing on our core business and
be increasingly responsive to our customers' needs on a global level. The
creation of business units will allow us to continue innovating and
marketing our industry-leading database technology, while dedicating
resources in high growth markets. The new structure also enables us to
effectively leverage the enormous talent pool we have amassed with the
recent acquisitions of Illustra Information Technologies and Stanford
Technology Group (STG). I am confident that this new organizational
structure and new executive appointments will strengthen our overall
image, focus and direction, and will contribute dramatically to our
continued success."

NEW BUSINESS UNITS

Dick Williams, former president and CEO of Illustra, has been appointed
senior vice president, Business Units for Informix. Williams is
responsible for building and managing five strategic business units that
address some of the crucial issues that will affect the database landscape
over the next several years. The new business units complement Informix's
ongoing core business of providing high performance, scalable database
servers and development tools by studying key customer issues in their
respective domain areas, and building the crucial partnerships or
value-added products required to help customers innovate.

Assisting Williams in his new role is Bruce Golden, former vice-president
of marketing for Illustra. Golden has line management responsibility for
both the Internet/Intranet and DataBlade Developer's business units, and
will serve as Williams' chief-of-staff. Five new general managers have
also been named as heads of the respective business units:

DataBlade Developers, under the direction of Dave Cope,

Data Warehousing, under the direction of Kirill Scheynkman,

Interactive Sports and Entertainment, under the direction of Skip Glass,

Internet/Intranet, under the direction of Bill Ray, and

Workgroup Solutions, under the direction of Brett Bachman.

MARKETING

In the last few years, the overall positioning and awareness of Informix in
the marketplace has improved dramatically. As the company continues its
rapid growth, the responsibility of increasing its global position and
image becomes more complex, requiring a more aggressive and concentrated
effort. Steve Sommer has been appointed vice president of worldwide
marketing, to lead this critical endeavor.

Jeff Hudson has been appointed to vice president of business development
and product marketing. Hudson continues to lead business development in
key market areas and will determine the direction and scope of the
company's product plans.

SALES ORGANIZATION

As announced earlier this year, Informix sales organizations have merged
under the appropriate geographic heads, all reporting to Phil White: Ron
Alvarez, Americas; Ken Coulter, Europe, Africa, Middle East and
Asia/Pacific; Howard Graham, Federal; and Ed Winder, Japan. Former
Illustra sales representatives have been incorporated into the various
sales geographies.

In addition, two new executive appointments have been made within
Informix's Americas sales organization. Scott Chalmers, who reports to Ron
Alvarez, has assumed the new role of vice president, U.S. sales. Chalmers
has been a key contributor on Informix's U.S. sales team for six years,
both in his exceptional management of the Western Region, as well as in
his previous capacity as manager of the Rocky Mountain district. In his
new position, Chalmers is responsible for managing U.S. sales,
concentrating his efforts on Fortune 100 accounts.

Also reporting to Ron Alvarez, Steve Nelson, formerly of IBM, has been
named vice president of Americas lines of business, sales and marketing.
Nelson is responsible for industry marketing and sales to Telecom, and
industry marketing to the Finance, Manufacturing and Retail lines of
business.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

A key part of Informix's R&D team is the integration of STG's and
Illustra's technologies into the company's industry-leading DSA
technology. The following executive appointments have been made to
continue the strong leadership and success of Informix's research and
development team. Michael Stonebraker, the founder of Illustra, has been
named vice president and chief technology officer of Informix. In this
capacity, Stonebraker will help develop Informix's technology strategy and
identify technologies outside of the company's current plan that will be
initially developed under his direction.

Paula Hawthorne, formerly of Illustra, has been appointed vice president of
tools development reporting to Mike Saranga, senior vice president, who
continues to head the company's product management and development.

"I'm very pleased that our hard work over the last several months has
resulted in a number of new teams designed to help accelerate Informix's
leadership position in crucial new market and technology areas,"
summarized White. "The cumulative talent of the Informix, Illustra, and
STG teams all coming together is very exciting to watch. We feel very
confident about meeting the challenges ahead of us, including dominating
important new segments of the information management market."
