IBM Announces America Online, Inc. Intends to Use IBM infoMarket Technology
and Provide Helper Application Free to its Users

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 1 (Internet World, Booth # 1207) . . . IBM and
America Online, Inc. (AOL) today announced AOL's intent to use IBM
infoMarket's Cryptolope* containers to deliver software, information and
other digital content securely to users through its Global Network
Navigator service (GNN)**. Cryptolope containers are secure cryptographic
envelopes which allow publishers to sell their content on the Internet and
provide them with a mechanism for receiving payment from the users who
purchase that content.

GNN will also explore the use of IBM infoMarket's Event Management System
and billing capabilities to better manage the valuable content that
resides on its service and to provide a means for content providers to be
paid for the use of their information.

"The foundation of the network and the Internet was built on open
standards," said Jeff Crigler, vice president, IBM infoMarket. "We are
proud to be working with America Online in order help them gain control of
their content providers information and for infoMarket to reach a
worldwide audience. "

When a definitive agreement is concluded, GNN will deliver infoMarket's
helper application for free to all its customers. This will allow GNN
customers to buy valuable digital information and software using the
security features of Cryptolopes.

The IBM infoMarket service allows users to search multiple, distributed and
heterogeneous databases with a single query which brings back a unified
results set in relevance-ranked order. IBM infoMarket searches Web
information, USENET newsgroups, and many commercial databases containing
content which was not previously available on the Web. Also planned as
part of this relationship, IBM infoMarket will be able to use AOL's
WebCrawler** technology.

If permitted by the publisher, the customer can choose to send the
Cryptolope to others who may be interested in its contents, thus
facilitating the first phases of superdistribution, a new business model
which will enable customers to redistribute a publisher's content while
providing a mechanism for payment from subsequent customers.

Global Network NewsTicker: The News You Need, When You Need It

IBM and America Online also announced today an intent to license the IBM
infoMarket NewsTicker* to America Online in order to provide information
free to the desktops of Internet surfers. The Global Network NewsTicker,
plans to scroll real-time newsfeeds across users desktops offering users
valuable up-to-date information throughout the day.

This information is provided to users in a ticker format which scrolls
across the user's PC screen, displaying the headlines of news stories. The
ticker will have interactive buttons that will allow users to click on a
story of interest and receive a full-text version of a GNN story. The
headlines will be updated throughout the day and cover U.S. and
international news, as well as business, sports and entertainment news.

David Kaiser, AOL vice president, comments: "IBM's infoMarket technology
has application in many areas and is enabling technology for making
increasingly valuable information and software available online."
