HP and Netscape Outline Strategic Alliance to Deliver Enterprise Intranet
Solutions Across UNIX and NT System Platforms

Companies to Develop Open Framework for Work-force Collaboration

PALO ALTO and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 14, 1996 -- In a strategic move to
address the demand for reliable Intranet solutions for medium to large
enterprises, Hewlett-Packard Company and Netscape Communications
Corporation today announced they would work together to deliver
business-critical Intranet solutions based on UNIX and NT operating
systems. Describing a comprehensive alliance that covers technology
sharing and product development, as well as joint marketing, sales,
support and training, both companies expressed their intent to provide
enterprise solutions that reflect the open standards of the Internet.

HP and Netscape plan to work together on seven major initiatives,
including:

to develop UNIX and NT system Intranet solutions for
  enterprise work-force collaboration;

to provide Intranet-management solutions using HP OpenView
  and Netscape servers;

to resell Netscape SuiteSpot and FastTrack server software
  for HP-UX and NT servers;

to ensure interoperable corporate messaging and information
sharing among HP OpenMail, Netscape Mail Server and Netscape
  News Server;

to authorize HP as a worldwide support provider for
  Netscape products;

to enhance printing and publishing for the Internet; and

to provide worldwide sales, joint marketing and consulting
  expertise to support these solutions.

"There's more to the Internet than just publishing Web pages," said Richard
E. Belluzzo, HP executive vice president and head of the Computer
Organization. "What users want today are practical enterprise Intranet
solutions to improve business productivity. By combining HP's expertise in
the enterprise and Intranets with Netscape's expertise in the Internet
arena, we can deliver the products, business solutions, consulting and
support needed to improve customers' business processes."

"Netscape and HP are sending a strong message today to corporate customers:
We intend to work together to deliver cross-platform solutions, products
based on open Internet standards and innovative technology focused on
Intranets and collaboration," said Jim Barksdale, president and chief
executive officer of Netscape." As owner and operator of the world's
largest private Intranet using Netscape software, HP knows firsthand the
needs of enterprise customers. HP and Netscape are drawing on that
expertise to jointly meet enterprise needs."

Intranet Solutions for Enterprise Work-force Collaboration

As part of the strategic alliance, the companies intend to design an
open-framework architecture for enterprise work-force collaboration and
develop an Intranet-based solution that incorporates products from both HP
and Netscape. The companies would leverage their messaging, systems
management and collaboration technologies to improve work-force
productivity. This solution would allow corporate users to access, share
and work together on information, documents and projects even though the
individuals may be located in different offices or in different time
zones.

In line with their objectives of providing enterprise users with the
benefits of the Internet's open standards, HP and Netscape plan to
identify open and extended application-programming interfaces (APIs) for
the architecture and publish them to the industry, promoting industry
support and integration.

In announcing support for Intranet solutions that promoted open,
multiplatform standards, Phil White, chief executive officer and president
of Informix Software, Inc., said, "HP and Netscape share our belief that
intranets have grown up and are now poised to deliver a new generation of
business-critical applications.

"Customers are looking to enterprise Intranet solutions to develop
applications more quickly, to reduce system-management burdens and to
utilize rich information types, such as graphics, documents, audio and
video. This strategic alliance demonstrates that this market is real
today, and companies can now increase their productivity using Intranet
technology that's enterprise-ready, open, flexible and easy to adopt."

Managing Corporate Intranets

HP and Netscape plan to work together to develop Intranet-management
solutions for both UNIX and NT system environments using both Netscape's
line of server products and HP OpenView, the industry-leading network- and
system-management software. As a result of this effort, enterprise
customers would be able to manage their multiplatform Intranet
environments more easily.

Reselling Netscape Server Products for the Enterprise

HP plans to expand its current offerings to include Netscape's latest
server software products, SuiteSpot and Netscape FastTrack, which would be
resold for HP-UX and HP NetServer platforms.

Ensuring Interoperable Corporate-messaging and Information-sharing

HP and Netscape intend to develop interoperability between HP OpenMail, a
leading standards-based client/server messaging system, and Netscape Mail
Server, an open, standards-based messaging system. This interoperability
would give customers the ability to use Netscape Navigator client software
with HP OpenMail and HP OpenMail clients with Netscape Mail Server.
Netscape also would promote HP OpenMail as an enterprise messaging
solution.

Worldwide Support

As part of the alliance, HP would be authorized to provide a full range of
support services on Netscape products. HP would be Netscape's first global
support provider, leveraging HP's worldwide network, that supports
mixed-platform, enterprise computing environments.

Enhanced Printing and Publishing

A key part of making the Intranet enterprise-ready is the ability to print
and publish information easily. Netscape and HP have been working together
through standards bodies to develop printing-oriented extensions to HTML.
HP and Netscape also plan to include a customized version of Netscape
Navigator with a future version of an HP LaserJet printer.

Consulting Expertise and Joint Sales and Marketing

Each company will leverage its respective industry strengths. HP plans to
develop consulting expertise for Netscape products within the Internet
Services Practice of HP's Professional Services Organization (PSO). This
expertise would help both companies deliver solutions to customers
worldwide. HP and Netscape plan to train their respective sales forces to
sell these solutions, and both companies will undertake joint marketing
and promotional programs to educate the market and customers about these
initiatives.
