HP's New IT Collaboration Program Delivers HP OpenView IT/Administration
For Workgroups To Bridge PC Desktops, Servers And Enterprise Environments

New Product Provides Single Point of Management among HP-UX, Novell Netware
and Microsoft Desktop Environments

PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA. MAY 6, 1996

Recognizing how increasingly challenging it has become for customers to
integrate enterprise and workgroup environments effectively,
Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the IT Collaboration Program, a
program focused on increasing the coexistence of mixed UNIX system,
Microsoft NT, Novell Netware and Microsoft desktop environments.

Focusing on solutions and offering products at workgroup-friendly prices,
the IT Collaboration Program today delivered HP OpenView IT/Administration
for Workgroups. For customers managing workgroup-size domains,
IT/Administration for Workgroups provides a single point of management to
integrate business-critical HP-UX(1) environments with Novell NetWare and
Microsoft desktop environments. IT/Administration for Workgroups
complements the currently shipping, full-sized IT/Administration product
for enterprisewide management.

"With today's announcement of the IT Collaboration program, we believe HP
has the broadest and most complete integration solution available in the
industry," said Richard C. (Dick) Watts, HP vice president and general
manager of the Computer Systems Organization. "The IT Collaboration
Program addresses customers' need to integrate mixed environments by
providing products that offer greater levels of flexibility and
manageability than ever before."

The IT Collaboration Program provides enhanced integration and superior
functionality between HP-UX and PC environments. In addition to today's
announcement of a system-management solution, the IT Collaboration Program
also includes integration elements for network operating systems,
messaging, security, networking and distributed applications.

Industry-leading System-management Tools

Today's announcement introduces HP OpenView IT/Administration for
Workgroups -- a simplified and lower-priced version of the enterprise
product, HP OpenView IT/Administration. The new product has been tailored
to meet the specific needs of workgroup environments and includes a
complementary small-footprint version of HP OpenView OmniBack II for
simplified backup of management servers. Running on the enterprise-class
HP-UX operating system, IT/Administration for Workgroups provides a simple
way to manage up to 250 nodes centrally and consistently from HP-UX for
NetWare systems as well as for Microsoft desktops, including a Windows NT
Workstation and Windows 95. By comparison, HP OpenView IT/Administration
supports thousands of nodes. Future support is planned for management of
full NT Server functionality from IT/Administration for Workgroups.

IT/Administration for Workgroups includes the following features:

 centralized, automated software distribution;

centralized administration of Novell NetWare and NetWare/9000
 file and print servers;

 heterogeneous hardware and software inventory management;

 thorough pre-defined, ready-to-run query capabilities;

centralized user and account administration; and

option to use a PC, X-terminal or HP-UX workstation as
 the management console.

"HP appears to have taken to heart the Japanese model of significant,
incremental improvement, recognizing that consistent progress pays
dividends in both functionality and revenues," said Richard L. Ptak,
director of Systems Management Research, D.H. Brown Associates, Inc.
"Their new HP OpenView IT/Administration for Workgroups product brings the
industry-leading solution to the LAN environment. LAN solutions
proliferate, but only HP provides a unified set of centralized management
features for all major LAN environments -- NetWare, NT and Microsoft
desktop. For customers, this translates into directly leveragable LAN
management skills with significantly reduced administrative and training
costs."

Customers Receive Increased Flexibility

"As we evaluate the role of NT server in our environment, we see the IT
Collaboration product suite as an excellent way to give us the flexibility
to integrate NT with our HP-UX system whenever and wherever we might need
to," said Dana Nielsen, director of IT Computing Services, Northwestern
University.

IT/Administration for Workgroups is an ideal solution for customers who are
faced with managing mixed environments of HP-UX, PC servers and PC
desktops and the challenges of trying to provide a single, consistent
administration console across these platforms. IT/Administration for
Workgroups' easy-to-use graphical user interface, fill-in-the- blank
screens and single point of management make it an ideal solution for
part-time system administrators who are not part of the IT organization
but have to manage mixed environments. IT/Administration for Workgroups
enables customers to take control of their mixed environments by
consolidating UNIX system, network operating system (NOS), and PC
administration activities with a common process, allowing them to perform
complex tasks quickly and accurately.

"With IT/Administration for Workgroups, customers don't have to make an
either/or decision between workgroup- and enterprise-focused solutions, "
said Watts. "IT/Administration for Workgroups offers customers great
flexibility since they will be able to have a single management console
that can be used across their HP-UX, Novell Netware and Microsoft NT
Advanced Server Environments."

Time-consuming, routine activities, such as updating system software, can
be reduced substantially -- from hours to minutes -- with
IT/Administration for Workgroups. For example, to update system software,
an administrator simply queries the central database to determine which
nodes need revisions and have the disk capacity to receive revisions. The
administrator then drags and drops the software icon onto that collection
of nodes, and the update has been made.

Since many organizations are expected to want integration between their
workgroup- and enterprise-management solutions, IT/Administration for
Workgroups is slated to be integrated into the managed environment of the
enterprise product -- IT/Administration. This is expected to facilitate
selection, commonality and automation of management processes across an
enterprise.

Recent Announcements that Complement the IT Collaboration Program

* Advanced Server/9000(2) enables UNIX systems to integrate with Microsoft
NT Server. Also, interoperability with NetWare environments is provided
through the NetWare IPX/SPX stack for HP-UX (as well as through the
existing Novell NetWare for HP 9000 product). HP-UX seamlessly integrates
with Windows NT and Novell NetWare to support business-critical
applications and databases in a one- box solution at workgroup price
points.

* HP's leading enterprise messaging solution, HP OpenMail, now links
workgroup environments to the enterprise with desktop mail clients of
choice (for example, cc:Mail, MS Mail, MS Exchange) at a price competitive
with workgroup messaging applications. HP OpenMail prices have been
reduced by 60 percent, enabling customers to take advantage of an
enterprise messaging platform at workgroup prices. Also, HP announced that
it expects to make available HP OpenMail on Microsoft NT Server later this
year.

* The recently announced HP Praesidium Authorization Server simplifies
application authorization and improves application security by using rules
derived from the customer's corporate security policy to determine users'
application-access privileges. The product runs on HP-UX and manages
security authorization for both HP-UX and NT Server applications with
access from Windows 3.1, NT Workstation and HP-UX clients.

* Supporting broad deployment of object-based applications, in early April
HP announced support for translation between OLE Automation objects and
CORBA objects with its ORB Plus 2.0 product.

* Two recently introduced products -- DCE Encina Lightweight Client and
Open Horizon's Connection Application Broker -- further develop
interoperability between the PC desktop and distributed enterprise
applications.

* As part of a broader announcement in March, HP expanded its HP OpenView
network- and system-management offerings to include expanded agent support
for Windows NT and Novell NetWare platforms. These new agents enhance the
management capabilities of HP OpenView enterprise products. In March, HP
also announced platform solutions for Windows NT, including HP OpenView
Network Node Manager as well as other HP OpenView products.
